Making a Living as an Artist: Inside the Exciting World of Art Festivals

"Why I do art festivals for a living." This was the topic of a panel discussion that I was invited to speak on at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival as part of their new and improved emerging artists program. In this video you'll see highlights from that discussion with myself & artist Mark Mohrenweiser as well as meet Zion Rozier, one of the artists in the Coconut Grove Arts Festival's emerging artist program. Whether you're a new artist or a road warrior veteran artist, you'll enjoy this talk!

Oh man … the “how to be a good neighbor” question. DO NOT put your stuff in your neighbor’s space. If the show is laid out pole to pole : no bins, no mirrors, definitely no chair with you sitting in it on the front corners of your booth because that is not your space. *deep-breathes* 🧘🏻‍♀️ 😂😅

Hahahaha…this part of the discussion kind of devolved into all the things that make a bad neighbor🤣

Evan, it's great that you are helping the next generation of artists find their footing in the art festival world. Zion, I agree with Evan, you're going to do great things in the future. Keep up the great work both of you!

Love how you spent some time on anxiety at the end, too. I kept thinking that would go away...6 years later and it's still here :D

I could probably have an entire KZread channel devoted to anxiety🤣😂 It can be a great motivator at times.

I was accepted for the Emerging artist program for Gasparilla festival this year, so these videos are very helpful. I have no idea of what to expect. Will be driving for the first time to such a long distance from Colorado, by myself, display panels are a guessing game, the amount of artwork too, lots of firsts here. Good thing that I like talking to people, so at least this anticipation doesn't create an anxiety for me. Thank you for your work!

Hello congratulations I'm looking to do this actual festival for my first one next year in 2025 and I've just stopped on what I should sell because I do pretty large pieces. Shipping packing add small works on my big concern also I'm just hoping to get accepted

@@blackvirgo09 , large pieces are very good. I noticed that it's probably good to bring very large ones as a statement and very small ones for quick sales. I didn't have enough small ones, they got sold in the first two hours and the largest one was actually not that large. I applied to the show with a complicated technique where embroidery has a center stage but It takes a long time to stitch it. In the end my booth mainly consisted of medium sized pieces. One couple even said that they really like my work but they came looking for a bigger piece for a specific place. My fellow emerging artist next to me was selling very large pieces left and right. So you are fine on this end. Create small ones too. Around 12x12.
