Making a Lathe Tailstock Tapping Chuck Adapter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show how to customize a boring head shank and make it into a tapping chuck holder. I could have purchased an end mill holder, but that would be no fun. And I didn't know they existed with a Morse taper shank until after I made this :)

What I would give for that lathe ! I appreciate how you keep it clean and take care of it ! Some people don't deserve such a nice machine !

I like fine wire wheels for rust removal when I do not want to alter dimensions

It really just depends on the wire material. Steel on steel will change dimensions. A finer one May change it slower. A brass wheel is best for steel if you want to change dimensions the least.

Wow! Aaron, you are a born genius. I have enjoyed this DIY more than I have others in a very long time. And the reason I enjoyed it so much is because: I am teaching a young lady about machining. And THIS DIY was perfect to show her. And she latched onto it like paint on a slick piece of metal. And she understood about "Morse" tapers like white on rice. All because YOU did it in a way that made sense. Thank you for this, kind Sir.

Nicely done! One thing to be aware of when power tapping using the tailstock: Size can work against you; a large heavy tailstock can cause tap breakage simply because of inertia/ surface tension (combined with a small tap). Now you need to make a die holder for those thread sizes which your lathe may not do well (or at all).

Yeah for sure. I was trying to say that at the end but kinda bungled the words- a small tap pulling a tailstock this heavy can be a disaster waiting to happen.

That’s why there are sliding tap holders for the tail stock. Instead of pulling a multi 10 pound tail stock, it only has to pull a 4 or 5 ounce tap and holder.

Nice job, great addition to the shop. Surprised the MT 5 sleeve was able to fit in at full length, my experience is the spindle taper is truncated normally. Mitutoyo is my favourite brand for all things measuring, here in the UK Moore & Wright were the defacto choice, quality fell dramatically from 1990 onwards, M & W are made in India now. Starrett had a plant in the UK. Great vlog, thanks for sharing. Regards John.

It looked to me like the back 1/3 of the sleeve was sticking out in air on the back side. I kinda like how far it goes in though, not hanging out too much.

Gday Aaron, beautifully done, the crane is a great idea I like that, the tailstock of your lathe moves so smooth, you can see that it’s a great quality machine, the goodies you received from Stan is really nice, beautiful indicator, thanks for another great video, I really enjoy watching, take care mate, Cheers Matty

Thanks Matty. Yeah that's one of my favorite things about the lathe- have the crank to easily move the tailstock along the bed, and it's effortless to move the spindle in and out.

Great video! I too just purchased one of these tap driver sets. I like to use forming taps but they drive somewhat tougher than regular taps. No problem with this driver system. I have end mill drivers with Morse taper shanks so this system really works well with my lathe also. Nice job! Thanks

Nice tool to have, when you need it, it will be ready to go! I’d like to see you use a smaller one on a test piece just to see how it works. That kinda sounds like I want to see you break a tap, but I mean just the opposite, I’d like to see it work!

Aaron, This looks like a clever adapter. Now a word from my wordsmith wife... You made the same spelling error that I made for the first 40 years of my life. Now that I have been converted to a slightly better speller I thought that I would help you with one of my biggest spelling learning hurdles... "It's" is not the possessive form of it. "It's" is a contraction for "it is". The possessive form of it is "its". After finally learning to spell "its" I go spelling bonkers when I see it misspelled. Judging that most spell check programs don't be know the correct spelling for these two words, I suspect that "It's" misusage is among the most commonly misspelled words. ... before castigating me for a spelling rant, bear in mind that I have lived with a wordsmith and a flawless speller for most of my life! Her idea of a good time is to enter spelling bees. She doesn't understand why I am reluctant to join her.
