Making a Huge Amount of Money in a Short Period of Time

Ғылым және технология

Story picks up after I had lost my main customer not long after miraculously even being able to open up a shop with the help of a couple of great men, then a new company comes in out of nowhere and gives us a test to prove ourselves before they'll agree to become our main customer... We impressed them so much that they started giving us all the work we could handle and even gave us a $350,000 waterjet machine to waterjet parts for them.

Great But a small tip for new shop owners, make sure that your biggest customer never supplies you with more than 30% of your work If they fall and your work for them is let's say 70%, you can close your doors like Titan had to do. Spread your risk so you are not depentent on 1 customer Also if you are the one that outsources everything and you just assemble everything, make sure you outsource not only with 1 shop, but multiple If that shop goes under you have to biuld a completely new relationship with a diffrent shop that won't give you the quality you are used to Also if you have a big project divide that work over 3 shops, so they can work at the same time and you have your complete order pretty much 3 times as fast And if 1 company has trouble delivering because they are busy or thay have problems with their machine, you still have 2 other supliers already making parts for you

Correct… and soon I will discuss how that exact thing hurt me beyond comparison… But lesson was learned and it never happened again. Those early days came with struggle but it set a business foundation under me that nobody could ever take away…

@@TITANSofCNC I was very curious as to what you would say because 'in theory' it is great advice. almost impossible in the real world. i read 80% of revenue will in the end come from 20% of our customers unless you consciously fight that trend. just watched your iconel video. i guess tool pull in is never an issue? lol jk

Those brass parts made on those old cam screw machines are bushings for Armstrong pins that go into a press that punches ceiling tiles. I’ve made thousands and thousands of those.

The pandemic put my company behind and we’ve been playing catch-up for the last 3 months been working 10 hour days 7 days a week. September 6 (labor day) will be my first day off in 37days. But I don’t have a family to take care of yet so I tell myself I don’t have the right to complain. We got 2 more months and then things should go back to normal

Hey Titan, we have a similar issue with not being able to keep up with customer requests. We make aerospace tooling assemblies. Most of our work is one off parts so anyone we hire needs to be able to program, set up and run the machine to produce a good part. I'd be interested to talk and hear what your opinion is on hiring and trying to grow the business.

Never have one company supply you with more than 20% of your work. Never purchase machines based on one vendors work. Never have all your eggs in one basket. There’s always some shop out there willing to outbid you, even if it’s a temporary loss. Be careful, good luck, and make hay when the sun shines. Cheers

Hi Titan, What's your reaction to Sandvik buying Mastercam? Is this going to be a conflict of interests for you with Kennemetal, or are you going to start including more Sandvik tooling? This took me completely by surprise. They've already bought CG Tech (vericut), and machine monitoring software. It seems Sandvik want to supply everything from the material the part's made from, to the cam software you programme on, and the tooling you cut it with.

Yeah, this is not a good business plan if you as a company have 80% of your parts machined by one supplier. You are owned by the machine supplier. They fail, you fail. Also works in reverse. If this isn't the definition of "all your eggs in one basket" I don't know what is. Need to minimize risk in all areas.

It's called being a job-creator. I'm fine with my employer getting rich because they are the one working weekends, they are the ones bearing the risk, they are the ones taking the heat, and they are the ones allowing me to provide for my family, and for many other families. Guys like this made America the thriving nation it has been.
