Making a High Quality Audiophile Power Cable with Gotham 85015 [Step by Step]

Ғылым және технология

Getting a high quality audiophile power cable for a hifi system can be an expensive business and exhausting. Finding the right cable is also a confusing task. What's good about Gotham Power cable is its neutral character which doesn't seem to alter sonic character. It is not hard to DIY/make your own one. Here is a step by step video on making one with Gotham 85015 power cable and nice quality AC plugs.

You should not solder the wires when terminating a mains plug/connector as solder is soft and will cold flow over time resulting in a bad connection. Best to use compression crimp ferrules or plain twisted and folded bare wire.

Every serious audio enthusiast should have a full set of “neutral” system cables, like you said, so that one can actually hear the components characteristics and the changes they make with different combinations. By the way, this is a very educational and therapeutic video, thank you.

How about a mains cleaner review should I get one or are they a waste of money, interesting watching you making the cables ex tv engineer.

Keith, mains cleaners do work but it’s hard to find one that does not affect the sound signature of your system. I would look at something like a Plixir balanced power conditioner or a PS Audio power regenerator.

@@TL3721 Well said TL. I personally don't use any mains cleaner, but will try my best to separate the "audio" and "others" with different socket/ distributor boards. Sometimes where possible, I will unplug the "others" when needed.

Placebo! 6 foot power cord does nothing, sorry, Electrician all my life and the cord before the power supply in the gear does nothing. It can't filter and absolutely can't add anything to whats at the wall. Just like a standard cord, but they do look pretty. Most are really stiff which is not good on the connector in the gear.

Yes,. I understand you are a electrian and use equipment to measure. I am a mechincal engineer, IT and audio engineer. But as an audiophile, I use my ear to judge. And I have to say my ear, which is one of my measuring equipment can tell the different even in blind tests. When that happens, theories work as a basis for me and tuning become an ehancemnt. If there are changes I cannot hear the difference,. I will forgot it.

@@bitofthisanddad , I don't use the term audiophile, but electronics and music have been life long hobby. I have done many blind tests and on many things gone against "science", but not on this one. Power conditioners and such, eh maybe, depending on how extreme, but with any knowledge of how electricity works, and what the power supply in the gear does, it can't happen from a 6 foot cord. Too many people don't understand how real and strong placebo effect is, or how it really works. It was probably the hardest factor for me to overcome. It's close to impossible to tell if it's real or placebo. Most if not all "audiophiles" don't focus on eliminating this factor, they wanna believe. So much hi end audio is just bling.

I understand that others may be effected by placebo. You have your views and experience. I have mine. I experienced that something has no effect , some have positive and certainly many have negative effect. I am so used to finding fault in terms of sound quality is my gear. And over here , I mainly share what I see, and I like. I am not here to share what I don't like nor pointing out others may be wrong or whatever. Because I don't argue with someone's experience. Also a life long music, hifi lover and hobby for me. True audiophile go for ultimate reproduction and experience in audio system and certainly some cost huge bucks. Whether it's worth it is up to personal presceptive and value. For the "effect" of this power cord,. I hear what it does. If you can't, is your story . I can and is my story.

@@bitofthisanddad , I understand what your saying, but it just demonstrates how real the placebo effect is. Any cable that passes a complex audio signal can have some effect on the sound. I just try to make people aware that maybe don't have lots of money to spend how their brain can fool them and money can be spent on something that can make a real difference. I don't doubt that people "hear" a difference in power cords. That's my point. But many times science is correct. It's just a cord, and before the power supply it's not audio signal. It's only raw power and a piece of wire can't change the voltage, the cycles per second (50 or 60 depending on where you are), or filter, that's the job of the power supply. People are very stubborn, and have ego issues and don't like to admit that they can be fooled by their brain. I've been there too. I don't even have a problem with that. If people want to hear a difference and believe it's real and have the money to spend, that's ok, they'll be happy, and that's the point of a hobby. Many people don't understand how it all works and I hate seeing them spend unnecessary money. Sorry for all the arguing, guess it's time to do my own u-tube vids.

@@bradt.3555 I was thinking just like u did, raw power, as long as it is thick enough, close to no resistance, etc, power cable should have no effect. Most of the things I learn in engineering told me it is not suppose to have an effect, except quantum mechanics. And my ear keep telling me my thinking is wrong. My ear kept telling me power cable is making a difference. Just like digital cable and especially USB cable. How on earth that there is a difference in sound with different cable ??!! As I mentioned in the the comment section in another video, if one cannot hear a difference, is great. There are so much less to worry and think about. Also may I point out, everyone's hearing ability is different, and definitely the resolving power of different system is different. See more and find out more with an open heart.
