I would think that the coffee would continue to decompose, and because coffee has NH3 in its composition it could release ammonia making a terrible smell later. Although that does leave the possibility that you air-dried your paper under the sun where the UV could kill the bacteria that form as the coffee spoils.

    Very "solid" project! I once saw a full metal binding in on of our libraries here that had a chain mail type of construction made out of silver-copper alloy to keep the spine flexible. The tragic thing was that somebody had left the book open without closing the clasps and the parchment inside swelled too much for it to be ever closed again.

  • @brocktechnology

    @brocktechnology

    3 жыл бұрын

    I have no practical experience but doesn't the parchment shrink to its original dimensions if you get it good and dry? Or is there a cracking hazard?

  • @Stopan

    @Stopan

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@brocktechnology The problem was mainly the wrinkling, that's where the swelling of the book came from. Parchment achieves its smoothness by drying under a lot of tension and then cut to size. It doesn't have the property of paper to just wet it again, press it and dry it. When it's already in book format, with writing, illuminations and so on, it's rather hard to hook it onto a frame and tension it again to become smooth. It has to keep pressed under all times, hence the clasps on the book. As the conservators told me, there was always the option to fit it into a new binding, constructed with the change of proportions in mind, though it was a shame it would never fit again in its original beautiful binding.

    I know this comment wasn’t for me (a random joe), but your question was similar to what I was thinking. My husband taught my younger sister photography, and she wants a book to put them all in. She wants a cool portfolio but not a scrapbook. She also draws cartoon strips. I was going to start making her these tomes, and she can fill each one with photos that follow with the theme of the tome itself. Unique, clean pages, whimsical enough to suit her arty nature, and her own individual incentive to keep pursuing photography.

    I remember being on a D&D server with a 7ft, warforged wizard who had what was basically this book. Gold inlay for writing, metal pages, inch thick covers of pure steel, and has straps to lug it around like a backpack since it was so damn heavy. The idea was that it was basically invincible and wouldn't break. My favorite part was when my gnome wizard interacted with him, and compared spellbound. I had a paper field guide that fit in my pocket because it was convenient (which for a gnome, might as well be a business card holder). The warforged would slam his "book" on the ground, and my gnome could've used it as a stage it was so big.

    Amazing! This is the 3rd NerdForge video I've watched. I have about 25 pages of a script for a film and have been stuck for over a year on it. Your videos have inspired me to start writing again and I realized that I need to create a "world" for the setting for the film in order to proceed. I watch this video and you're advertising world building software. Keep up the good work!!!

    @Florencia Aurelia It's Norwegian, but those are not actual words, it's from the Jungle Book or something and for some reason people in the nineties started using it as "what's up", I don't know. "Hva skjer a?" is asking what's going on and that's shortened to "skjera" which sounds like Shere (Khan) from The Jungle Book, then Bagereea from The Jungle Book. Then you can answer with "ingenting tingeling" which means "nothing" plus Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. Why? Well, nobody knows.

    Skjera Bagera. Awesome project Martina. I was astonished how heavy the finished book is since the cover is aluminium. Makes also some astonishing effect on the book shelf. I would like to see a lantern made with that design. I would use blue or purple paper or fabric to cover all the nooks and crannies from the inside in order to let the light shine through.

    This is incredible! I can't believe this is your first time working with metal like that, it came out fantastic. For future projects, you might want to look into blueing compounds, which essentially darken the metal for contrast. I think you could make some really beautiful pieces with that!
