Making a Fly Cutter - CNC Milling and turning a simple face milling tool.

In this video, we built a simple fly cutter. We inserted a lathe turning tool for turning inserts into the body.
It is a straightforward tool with simple geometry, so there was no need to create a cam program. It was programmed directly in the tool shop at the machine.
The outcome was very good.
Yes, a fly cutter has some disadvantages, such as imbalance. However, if you use it correctly with good cutting values, you can achieve excellent results, with smooth surfaces without putting too much stress on the spindle bearing.
Having the center of mass in line with the spindle axis is crucial. I checked my design in CAD, and it was satisfactory. For the best result, the tool needs to be balanced.

    It doesn't took that much time. I think the design in CAD with all my thoughts took approxiametely 1hr. I think you can improve the geoemtry and the look of this tool but i am happy how it comes out and the surfaces it creates. :)

    There Are many ways. 1. external with an optical measure tool. Just measure the highest point of the insert. 2. in the machine: set 0.3 to the top with a probe. carefully scratch the face of the part and push something like „measure tool in z“. Tell the Control that the surface is 0.3. it calculates the length. Face mill with the tool on Z0. After that measure the surface with a probe. If the probe shows Z0 everything is Perfect. If it shows z0.02 you have to reduce your z length by 0.02. 3. there are many more options.

    I have another question: 2:35 Why did you mill the center pocket first instead you can mill the whole with the bigger tool? Thank you

    Look at this video. kzread.infoeVo4EPD_Tb4 Titans of CNC showed why this way could be an option. I liked the strategy and gave it a try. It is nothing special but absolutely suitable.
