Of course, an important aspect of vintage flex nibs is how quickly the tines snap back when you let the pressure off. That's what gives the writing that nice variability - fine lines on the upstroke, and thicker lines down. Modern flex nibs tend to be slow in this regard. The difference would be greater with a fine nib.

I think it's time to pull my Indiegraph pen out of the drawer and ink it up, for the first time since jumping in on the initial kickstarter. Thing is, it came with a nail; I want a bit more line variation for drawing; and official flex nib units cost £35. Not bank breaking, but... shoot. 😅 Thankfully a £5 Noodlers Creaper nib fits, but I wouldn't mind just a touch extra flex. That's where this video comes in, and I have to say thanks for the processes and encouragement. I'll give it a whirl.

Awesome! Keep it up, next is making sure the feed keeps up with the flex. That's something many pen companies have issues with today.

I knew Josh was an engineer in order for him to make his own style fountain pens from scratch. Today we saw the excitement and joy of a creative soul putting his ideas into practice. You are a special person Josh PEACE

It will be more dramatic if you use a fine or extra fine so the flex can show more.

You could always use a black marker to draw on each side and then grind down until you see that no marker is showing. When grinding on the wheel, to protect the tip you could also put a dab on it with a hot glue gun just in case you accidentally hit the wheel.

Get the notched nib into production and have it as an option for your pens and I'll definitely buy the red-banded Slim. Or make a limited run by hand I guess. Regardless, I want one now.

You could find out what stainless they are using and then do a special heat treatment on it to soften the metal. I’ve had some success making steel nibs softer that way. Though they do lose some springiness if done wrong.

i wonder if you could grind a lamy nib to be more flexible. you could use a jinhao lamy ef clone nib as base.

Noodler's tends to try to reproduce vintage pens and styles, so they tend to have longer tines. Get virtually any of the old Esterbrook nib units (as cheap as possible, preferably) for an example. Nothing current comes close to the "wet noodles" of the past. You just can't duplicate one of them with stainless steel. They are all gold nibs. And either the knowledge how to make them is lost, or it's just not in the interest of the gold nib manufacturers to make them any more. That said, you can get flex from some stainless steel nibs. Again, Esterbrook did one (you have to look for the correct orientation of the numbers for the truly flexible ones, which still don't compare to the old "wet noodles.") Noodler's seems to be the example to shoot for, for a modern nib. (I've heard that India makes a flexible nib, if you know where to look, and apparently that's what Nathan Tardif has done, as his pens are all made in India.) Good job on the nib! I'd like to see if a modern nib can get to the same flex of the old ones! (Feed is an extra step in getting a great flex pen. All the old ones are ebonite, as are the ones that Noodler's has. Much easier to modify for the necessary ink flow.)
