Making a Fingerboard From The World's Hardest Wood // Strange Boards // December Fingerboards

Ойын-сауық

In this first episode of the December "Strange Boards" series, I turn a solid chunk of the world's (3rd) hardest wood, Quebracho Colorado, into a fingerboard.

    So glad I found you! I thought this was years ago I didn’t know you are doing this stuff now! Awesome, from entirely different worlds on way different paths with very different knowledge backgrounds. Yet close ideas driven by passion, thank you for what you do and you are making my processes better. I was just trying yesterday to cut my own veneer lol. You did it two ways that I didn’t but how awesome because know you’ve done the legwork for me! For free maybe but you have won a heart and isn’t that the goal. Looking forward to watching more videos and learning from you. Thank you!

    that wood is beautiful! certainly took lots of effort to make it into a board. i was curious about the hardness relative to canadian maple. looks like Canadian maple has a hardness of 1450, while quebracho colorado has a hardness of 20,340 (the higher the number, the harder the wood). very cool!!

  • @frenchmefrenchyou

    It’s crazy hard! Very heavy too. And very rigid deck. Shoulda said how it felt to ride. Like you said, way harder than maple!

    Hey Jojo, this was very interesting to watch and I wanna see where this series goes! It'd be so cool if you try to make a deck out of a whole solid piece of wood, either using the CNC machine or carving it. Greetings from another Jojo ;)

    maybe you could do balsa next! I've had a bit of experience with it, its soft weak, and I could only find it in 1mm, the decks I made with it where light, it sand easily, but also means it'll get razor tail quickly, which it has.

    your fingers were very close to the electric saw at some moments, very scary, reminded me of my grandpa who worked as a metalsmith and lost a few of his fingers on his hand working with an electric saw, it cut his fingers. i was wondering if it would be safer to cut thin plies of wood with a jointer or planer

  • @frenchmefrenchyou

    @frenchmefrenchyou

    Ай бұрын

    Well I did lose the tip of one of my fingers already using a router. It's a part of using tools which even if you're experienced is always a risk. I've done this for a while and do my best to stay safe with what tools I have. A jointer or planer could help with certain steps of the process but you still have to use a bandsaw or a table saw at some point. Anywho, I suppose it's about what you feel comfortable doing, and I try not to do things that scare me.

    Very cool as usual. I suggest 3d printing a little holder for your three magnets so it becomes one piece and faster to put on and take off. The veneer sander jig was pretty cool. I have something similar and also fear those kickbacks lmao. The model I use is made by Byrns model machines, which funnily enough is extremely similar in design. Nice boards, I look forward to the rest of the series.

    Good tip! I thought about if but didn’t get around to it. Yeah I saw those byrnes machines but I couldn’t figure out how to order one or even see what the price was! That website is mega oldschool! But that jig works incredibly well to be honest. Couldn’t figure out an automatic feed which I left out of the video but it’s easy enough to do by hand.

    One question. When will you make the video from the off cuts (the factory tour video where you shoved a drawer full of left veneer from cutting the boards) it was the factory tour video exactly at 9:41

    do you guys think that by having machines do everything for you, it somewhat takes the “art” or fun out of making the fingerboard?

  • @frenchmefrenchyou

    @frenchmefrenchyou

    5 ай бұрын

    Most of the work is still done by hand, and the machines don’t run themselves! Check out our factory tour video and you’ll see that even with a Cnc machine, making fingerboards is still a very involved and manual process. So I wouldn’t say it takes away any of the fun, it actually makes precise and crucial steps safer and more reliable. Rounding and finishing is still an entirely manual process.

    when will part 2 come out??? and also will wooden molds work if its just basic wood?

  • @frenchmefrenchyou

    @frenchmefrenchyou

    3 ай бұрын

    Hi there! Sorry we're a little behind with the videos! Lots of work in the workshop! There will not be a part 2 as much as a whole lot of other parts! This is gonna be a whole series with many episodes. Regarding the wooden molds, it definitely should be hardwood. Soft woods like Pine, Spruce, Poplar, etc will not hold up. They can work for big skateboards but for fingerboards there is too much force concentrated in a very small area. So for wooden fingerboard molds, I would go with maple or woods with a similar hardness. Just avoid anything you can dent with your fingernail or refer to the janka hardness scale to find what woods are local to you and suitable.

  • @Farmatruck

    also another question could you make a part where you use wood that is harvested from under water? Or like the red wood from japan

  • @frenchmefrenchyou

    @frenchmefrenchyou

    3 ай бұрын

    Definitely! I mean, my feeling is anything dry enough and that will hold itself together without crumbling can be turned into a veneer. So beach wood, which is something I want to try, if dried, could be made into a veneer (I think).@@Farmatruck
