Making a custom tricycle differential
Ғылым және технология
Some time ago I completed a differential for a tricycle which is intended for the Uturn - my unique rear suspension tilting tricycle.
I had at my disposal many kinds of bevel gears of different sizes and applications. Either from outboard engines, nor from angle wheels and more. At the same time I tried many variations for planetary shell, materials from steel or aluminum as well. A first test of the design and dimensions of the differential was made on the 3D printer with PLA.
After many tests, you see my first differential ready to go on the road! It can transfer, without any friction, the power of the cyclist to one or both wheels with excellent traction, depending on where it is located. I am very pleased with the result and I look forward to combining it with a mid-drive system as it will be in the final tricycle for which it is intended - the Uturn.
Available are the blueprints in Rhino 5 as well as the differential integrated in three variants. With disc brake and freewheel mount, with fixed gear and freewheel mount only, depending on the needs of each application that interests you.

Hi link doesn't work. Have you discontinued these?
Pure genius, love it!
Καταπληκτικη δουλεια, οπως παντα! απο την ιδεα στο μυαλο, στο σχεδιο και στην υλοποιηση
Until I get a real differential for my fat tire tricycle ive drill a hole into the non-driving wheel hub and install a pin when driving on sand for 2wd. I remove the pin for hard surfaces. Kind of like locking your hubs in an old 4x4 truck.
Great video! Thanks
Great work ....
Good work.
Super project
Amazing!!!
Nice economy of labor and parts.
thanks, very interesting
Thanks mister, dont know what planet your from but hope they leave you here a while.
pretty nice build! what hubs did you use for the rear wheels?
Hello, my friend. I am very impressed with your videos and your work, great performance. I really liked your tricycle. I really wanted to make myself the same, if of course I can do it. Could you send me drawings of the differential, and the joints of the rear wheels, how is the drive arranged? I would be very grateful to you for that.)))
impressive work! clever and cost effective design. anybody ever told you, your hands look just like This Old Tony's? :D

Could a differential like this be used on a trike with two electric hub motors on the rear wheels as a power assist?

I was wondering the same thing. Also looking for some sort of dual-motor controller with torque vectoring.

No,. You could use a mid drive with this differential, but why not use a front hub motor (assuming it's a delta trike)?
Cam i buy one of these from you ?
As my recumbent delta trike has cambered back wheels the differential would not work . Now that I have the money to buy all the equipment , I just need a bit more to rent the garage to try and build as well as you have . A couple spots in the video were blurred from speed but overall really good.
Please send on how to buy all items whole trike and differential also,im from the philippines thank you
Really nice work. I opted for the simple solution when I built my trike, single wheel drive! It's only an issue in the snow or ice, however a differential would be similar in snow or ice. I'm planning my next build will be chainless, using a generator motor combination.

Good
Hello, Compliments for this video and the wonderful work done to build a differential adaptable to a tricycle. I tried to follow the Facebook link, but it's apparently disabled. Can you tell me if this little treasure of a differential is still available and if so, at what price? Thank you in advance for your reply.
Hi what thread cutter dit you use for the hubs ?
where did you get the bevel gears, i am a hobbyist and am building a trike differential for my delivery job
neat design! Shame about the accompanying "music" Just machining sounds would be better
why didn't you put a 12 speed 9-51t cassette
Marvelous craftsmanship! Where can I find these bevel gears?

Would you build one of these for someone? Your facebook link is dead :(
Yes, but as it isn't Limited slip I wouldn't use it on my trike.
why are there two different musics playing simultaneously at the end xD

If it were a bike then only one musical track would suffice.

doesn't this transfer power to the wheel with less traction? isn't the opposite preferable?
@maximfadeev2012

If opposite this means both wheels will have same speed, and you will not be able to turn....the inner wheel wont let you do this
@WhyNotCycles

most of tricycles in the market has one wheel drive system. those with differential are much better because they provide two wheel rear drive. even when one wheel has less traction the power will go 50% there and 50% to the opposite wheel because the weight load to a vehicle like that is 50% to each rear wheel.

@@WhyNotCycles I see your point. A fixed axle would force both wheels to spin identically in a turn. Your solution addresses this scenario well. I was thinking about a posi-traction alternative where the differential would assign power to the wheel with more traction. This might be useful in the wet or uphill in the dirt/mud.

yeah I thought the easy way would be to allow the outside wheel to over speed with a freewheel. this would mean that if one was to accelerate during hard cornering the drive force would create a yaw rotation opposite to the cornering direction. for this sort of application I thought that would be fine and save the fiction and complication of a custom diff. did you try this setup?
Can u sell this differential to me. I am in India
