Making a Craft Room

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have been converting an unfinished room in our basement into a craft room. I had previously torn off all of the wall paneling and ceiling in this room leaving it as just bare studs. In finishing this room, I built a soffit around some ducts that are in the ceiling and I put in new electrical outlets and lighting. I then covered the ceiling with ¼” plywood and the walls with ½” plywood. This was then painted white to make a very bright space. Lastly, I made a French cleat system on the walls to hold our new workstations and storage systems for the craft room.

Man, over the last 22 years I have finished three basements with framing, plumbing, wiring, and all the fixins, and I swore I would never do it again. And here I am now, watching Frank and feeling envious that he gets to do it, and in spades. "Hmm, I need some air circ, let's just jet over to the CNC and make a cold air return in an 8x4 sheet of plywood". Sweet. Nice work, amigo!

Your children are very lucky to have a father who is both skilled enough AND motivated enough to make them this craft space. Art was the first human form of expression and communication. Nurturing a child’s artistic creativity is essential to developing well-rounded, confident and relaxed member of society. For a craft space, white walls and ceiling are a great choice. It’ll be less visually cluttered so they can tune into their imaginations easier. I hope your babies make tons of fun projects for years to come!

A good trick with the outlets is take the outlets out and drill a hole in the 'center' of the box. Then with the panel in place use a trim router with a straight bit and follower bearing to follow the box.

Frank, thank you for sharing your process and taking the time to illustrate your concepts in real space. I'm a junior architect (in Honolulu) and I really appreciate how clear drawings turn into clean construction, you do well at both. I appreciate the style of your editing marrying design intent with the actual conditions. It's very clear and your videos are engaging, and I think it's really a reflection of your experience and understanding of carpentry and design. I look forward to seeing how flat that concrete slab is and how you finish it. I hope the wall base doesn't overlap the vents at the wall/floor condition.

I also made my air return out of plywood, but I only went halfway thru from the front using the cnc router and then, on the back side, cut halfway thru in a perpendicular pattern. It REALLY made the painting an effort (until I broke out the spray can).

Cleaning is as simple as just vacuuming.

Love the French cleats being used throughout the home, I would have been confused if you didn’t go with them for the craft room since they’re used pretty much everywhere else. This way you can move bins and tool boxes around for different projects and always have a place to hang them. I foresee new storage bins similar to those in the workshop in your future.

Frank, I loved your video, but I highly recommend you Don't paint your floor. If you paint the floor now, in the future, if you decide to put in any other type of flooring, it may require you to grind off that paint. Any floating flooring may require some floor leveling to the subfloor, which will not bond to a painted surface. And any glued down flooring like carpet tiles will not bond to the paint or even the thinset for ceramic or porcelain tiles will not bond as well. The only flooring you may be able to install would be a tackdown carpet, which is typical for residential setting as the tack straps are nailed down to the concrete and are not affected by the paint. Just a suggestion from someone in the flooring industry for 9 years now. Looking forward to your next video!
