Making a brass worm wheel

Making a brass worm wheel.
This worm wheel is supposed to drive a home made power hack saw that I'm building.
I hope to come back to that subject later...

Gear cutter, here. Color me impressed. I've never seen an actual homemade hob that was actually homemade. Most folks usually go for a tap on its side when possible. Keep in mind, hobs are not exactly a worm with gashes. There is extra room at the tooth tips to add clearance in the root. Still, I'm damned impressed.

Great video but I have one question. On your worm wheel blank, I see that you have cut the face concave. This is obviously to give the worm tooth more area to run in. I am guessing that the bottom of the concave surface is equal to the OD for the pitch you are cutting, OD = (N+2)/PD. This means that the outside diameter must be increased to compensate for the worm diameter. So my question is thus: How did you determine what additional amount to add to the worm wheel diameter to compensate for this? Did you take the difference of the chord distance to the center of the worm using a chord length the same length as your worm wheel's width. For example, lets assume the following, the worm diameter is 1 inch, and the worm wheel width is .375 inch. A chord measuring .375 inch on a 1 inch diameter circle would be 0.460 from the center of the worm. .500 (radius of worm) - .0460 (distance of chord to center of worm) = 0.040 inch added to the OD of the worm wheel. Is this what you done? I am really trying to figure out how to calculate this stuff. Many thanks for your time. Joe

Sir you inspire me 😀 I have a lathe and a mill and not much else including money lol My only problem was the cost of the melting as in the burner and fuel and something to melt the brass in. I had assumed that I would have needed to spend over£100 and more on burner parts refractory cement gas/fuel etc just to make only 20kg of brass and aluminium ingots. Do you think it would be worth me building a furnace? And how much do you think it would cost me to build? Ps I have a blower fan and plenty of steel containers/scrap. Gas tanks ready cut

Making the furnace for melting brass and alu was not that difficult. I used two metal tins and between them and in the bottom I used refractory cement and also on the lid. No I'm not using propane, I use a 50/50 mix of diesel and waste oil for the heating. Thanks for watching.

On the brass driven part why can't it be made of tougher metal as where i need a few made for a few mini tillers ? How much do you charge to make the brass gears ? Thanks for your time

worm drives do a lot of rubbing, steel on steel would have galding problems where the two parts essentially try to friction weld together, brass on steel not so much, also the wheel has much more surface area than the worm, so it is best to minimize wear on the worm, brass won't wear out a steel worm very quickly.
