As a journeyman leather crafter I have to say you did a fantastic job for your first piece. The rivets were placed with a lot of thought and would be how I would have done it. While not necessary, Double cap rivets, which you used, can be set to have a more round finish over a flat one with a rivet setter and special anvil. Using these tools will also give your piece more play at the fulcrum while still holding fast. There are also tools to make the long buckle hole as well as cut the end into the pointed shape. These tools are no necessary either, they just streamline the process, you did fantastic with the tools you did use. If I were to give you any tips it would be to tool over a very hard surface (like a flat stone) with a single consistent hit per stamped shape for consistency of depth. Always dye before adding your findings, you may find over time the spots that did not get dye on both sides will fade over time and use faster than instances where the dye permeated the leather from both sides.

also i would recommend having a separate sacrificial surface to use your punches on. Keeping your main work surface smooth will save much trouble later on. Just imagine your fabric getting snagged by splinters every time you use it ugh. Edit: nvm, turns out she was using a thick cutting board all along.

@@blueocean43 I hope you get into the craft and love it! As for beginners tools I do infact have many recommendations I am more than happy to share. A leather punch set is a must, there are sets available where you can change the punch head to a different size and have only a single handle, those sets are fantastic for beginners because of the price and versatility. Once you do start to favor particular sizes in your work I would recommend obtaining said sizes in solid piece punches. I would avoid those plier like belt punches, they do not make good consistent holes for very long. The punch itself on those wears down quickly by design and will not remain sharp with prolonged use, thus tearing into the leather and frankly making ugly holes. A sharp craft knife is also highly recommend as they are perfect for shorter cuts, as for long strips a rotary cutter from the fabric store is an amazingly good tool that is not hard to find or maintain, pair with a good straight edge. (Please mind your fingers when using sharp tools!) A cutting mat is an often over looked tool, again the quilt section of the store comes in handy here, pick an appropriate size for your work area. A slightly more strange recommendation is a dedicated cutting board for your punch tools, they sell thick cheep plastic boards that are just a few inches in size that are lovely. I keep one in my travel kit for quick repairs and keep a much larger one in my work shop. Miss Banner did not use a setting tool in this video but I would recommend one if you are wanting to obtain convex double cap rivets but over all is not necessary to get the job done. If tooling and stamping is something that you are wishing to dive into leather shops such as Tandy Leather factory, in the USA, make fantastic starters kits which typically come with the materials for a few beginner friendly projects as well as an instructional pamphlet explaining the process of tooling in much more depth. Sewing leather is a much different process than sewing cloth, several charming tutorials can be found to show you the process. I personally favor solid needles over flats, it is a matter of preference however so please experiment until you find what sits well with you. A skiving tool is the tool Miss Banner used to obtain those lovely curved edges to her belt, many skiving tools have the handle also being the burnishing tool which I find to be a lovely addition to any beginner or travel kit. That concludes my recommended beginner tools, you can always dive deeper into certain aspects as you explore the craft and fill out your tools as needed. A lot of leather crafting is to do with your own comfort when using said tools so please branch down the paths that resonate with you and take care when using sharp tools and dyes.

Maybe consider finishing your wonderful belt with Fiebings Atom Wax, or at the very least, some cream leather polish in black or neutral, to protect the leather, but also to protect "you" from the dye rubbing off on your clothing or moisture hitting that belt. You know, those dreadful accidents when you splash a drop of champagne out of your glass and onto your good self. Edited to say: I'd also give that belt a good rub with a white cloth, until no further dye comes off the leather before waxing or polishing.

Do you think they’re essential, especially since I feel they’ll give you a nice finish, as well as a guide to sew along if you want to saddle stitch 2 pieces of leather together? I’m looking to make like wallets and bags (-:

I want a toolbelt for any house chore tool to be honest. A belt for my dish brush? Not very sanitary but very badass.

We all know she’s probably procrastinating from making the bolero, but she brings procrastinating to a whole new level.

Looks really good! If you plan on some future leather projects, here is a few tips: It's a lot easier to dye and seal before adding hardware and assembling. It's very important to put a top coat sealant on after dying, especially if you're dying the back side, or else you risk the dye rubbing off onto your clothes. Once it gets onto fabric, it will NOT come out.

Love it! The only trouble with wearing such things "out" in my neck of the woods is that folks give you side-eye thinking you're carrying a weapon. I had a lovely leather pouch-belt that I wore instead of a purse and thought myself extremely clever, right up until a cashier hit the deck when I reached for my wallet. :(

I just finished a hip bag and you've now put this thought in my head. Hopefully, it's obvious enough it's a fashion piece (as much as I hate that terminology) rather than holster. The black and white checkered belts and pretty, colorful trim that DOES NOT match might help.

I had something like this for _years_ in Seattle, so that I never had to carry a purse. This looks glorious, and I'm half tempted to go back to using a waist pouch again! If nothing else, I might make one to wear while I work, just so I half my tools at hand. Great job with that leather.

I’m also a belt pouch aficionado. Lately I’ve been stuck on cargo pants from Duluth Traders.

I would recommend adding a conditioner to the leather, dying makes the leather stiff, and dries it somewhat. Also you should remove any excess dye that is on the surface. The back of belts are not dyed. The dye can transfer to your clothes. Before burnishing the edhge of a belt , dampened it a bit. It makes the going easier.

The art of leathercraft and specifically figure carving has been something passed down in my family since my great grandfather. It's always nice to see new folks taking it up.

I'm trying to repeat to myself "I do not need another hobby" because now I too want a badass fantasy belt for everyday life! It looks amazing and the construction techniques look so satisfying!

For all your lady-of-the-manor- demeanor, seeing you get dirty making something beautiful shows how truly a down-to-earth beautiful person you are . Love the badassness and I hope it never changes.

I was thinking that too at first, but I think she's actually using a large butcher block cutting board over the normal table surface. You can see them both at a couple points. One example is around 9:33.

This just confirms my interest in taking up leatherwork. And also in making things that make me feel like a fantasy-protagonist bad-ass 24/7.

"Stamping into the next eternity" is a leatherworking mood. If it's not stamping, it's punching stitch holes.

This might be the perfect project to use my leather stamps that I purchased because I wanted to try out leather work. And I need a belt like this because of reasons :)

this rules and i am HEAVILY tempted to make one for work things myself, with a sheath on one side for my leatherman and pouch on the other side for miscellaneous tie line and tape and sharpie storage, for the days when jeans are simply the worst. i took a leatherworking course at school a year ago but it was mostly glove and moccasin making rather than heavier belt making, so i’m. sorely tempted lol. my only fear is that my lack of hip to waist ratio would make it not work as well lmao. regardless, incredible project!! this turned out so cool

With a 20mm-1" width of the belt, it could probably be used with more or less any MOLLE system accessory and pouch.

"not an expert in leather making", creates the most stunning leather belt for future sewing projects. It turned out great is really good work, also it works, if you go on a medieval festival, as a pocket for coins. Amazing work!!

when I am Dying my leather I lay down a sheet of cling film, lets me not worry about staining the work surface (so not stain other leather) and then clean up is so easily

I love how Bernadette's dying on an exquisite cutting board on a lovely desk, while I'm on a woodworking bench, with a bin bag to protect it, and paper roll on top of that, rubber gloves, and the dye bottle in a special holder I made because otherwise I *know* I'm going to knock it over..

Oh man, this viscerally took me back to Cub Scouts/a brief stint in Boy Scouts, because we did sooooo much leather tooling for projects. I haven't thought of that in at least 15 years, but we used these same exact tools and I absolutely adored it. This really makes me want to go buy a bunch of leather working tools and make things again! It'd be great to jazz up things I could get regular use out of, but it'd also be a great skill to relearn for cosplays. Thanks for the inspiration, Bernadette. 🙂

I wear one every day, at home and while out, holding my cell phone, wallet, a tiny pocket knife, chap/lipstick, small random crap, and an extra pencil. I have also made several pouches that I can add on for: camera lens, extra battery, extra knife, snacks, rocks, whatever. I don't know why people don't just do this! It's so practical, and my phone never falls in the toilet, it's safe, even on roller coasters! (yes. I've done this on many occasions!). I use a thin leather for the pouches, embroidering designs in them by hand, and assembling either by hand or sewing machine. I'm glad to see a beautiful, successful and entertaining KZread creative finally getting in board with this! 💜💜💜✊💪🐌😊 Yaayyyy Bernadette!! Now, to watch the rest of the video.... (my "utility belt", is a strip of medium weight leather, that I tie loosley around my waist/hips, over skirts, dresses, pants or jeans. The leather is soft and never chafes, but is strong enough. It's not belt leather, though you can also use a belt, even out of a woven fabric. For comfort, softness and flexibility are important). I hope you all make your own! :)

That belt looks really good, really nice, /and/ really useful! My wife was commenting "I made a leather belt once and we did the exact same process!" followed soon by "she makes it looks so fast, but that takes a freaking long time." There is nothing that makes me happy like Bernadette’s closed captions lol It is an amazing feeling to make a quick project that might be outside of your box but ends up perfectly suiting your needs! The downside: now I want one too

it looks so so good! I love the crossing over and the practicality. Very useful and cool looking! (also reminds me of my grandpa he took up leather working when he turned 90, oldest student at the course, made my mom a lovely leather belt)

As a leatherworker I have to say I’m impressed, you did a great job! I’d love to see you make more leather items. A few pointers for future reference… leather edges burnish more easily if you dampen them with water, definitely dye before attaching hardware, Chicago screws would probably be better than rivets on this project as they are stronger, buff the dyed leather with a cotton cloth once it’s properly dry to ensure no dye residue transfers to your clothing, and ideally use a leather finish, caranuba cream is your best bet for projects like this one. And nitrile gloves are advised when dyeing leather.

So freaking cool. Definitely bad-ass, and useful - and it's just a delight when those intersect. There is a little town not far from us called 'La Tour Blanche', with some castle ruins that are begging for costumed shenanigans.

Make sure you do 2 coats of wax based leather conditioner on the dyed leather to seal the dye and prevent it rubbing on on your clothes. On the inside of the belt you should sand it and get the fuzzies off before sealing. Also seal the pouch and knife. Leather like veg tan needs moisture like our skin to survive. Edit: rub it in well and set aside for 24 hours to cure then dry rub with a horsehair shoe brush and it will smooth the fibers very nicely. Also reburnish the sides after applying beeswax again after dying to really seal the cells and prevent cracking. You’re in the uk and it gets damp there a lot so sealing important when hand dying.h

Yes! I made myself a pair of 18th c pockets that I wear every day at school (my first year as a classroom teacher and I wanted certain things on me at all times) but they’re not very flattering. But this! Now this would be awesome!

A note for future leather working projects. Like stamping, you will find burnishing the edges works better if you dampen the leather first. Just a tip for you.

I love accessories that keep me out of a purse. I need to invest in some of these tools so I can repair my leather hip pouch- that thing could carry my life if I wanted it to.

I love this so much, and definitely need to make something similar now... But if I may make a slight suggestion if there's to be more leatherworking in future? Get a thickish cutting board to have underneath the work when punching or banging in rivets if you don't want your nicer worktable surface to suffer. Leatherworking tools are murder on wood. There's marble blocks you can get but they're super expensive so I just use a cutting board.

It’s always good to have your tools close and convenient :) I have some I’ve added eye screws to so I can wear then on a cord around my neck. No more resting sharp things on my work.

Nicely done, especially for your first leather project! If you're going to be altering the accessories a lot you might want to replace the rivets with chicago screws- they're basically rivets that screw together rather than being hammered shut, so you can undo them as needed later if you need to without having to drill or grind them out like regular rivets.

Lovely! Well done. I would recommend though giving the belt a good cleaning with saddle soap to get any excess dye off. You don't want to lean against some fine white fabric and get a dye stain on it. Also, the saddle soap moisturizes the leather so the finish is less likely to crack. Think of leather like your skin. You put moisturizer on your skin to keep it healthy. Treat your leather the same way and it will stay pretty a lot longer.

This is oddly relevant to my own belt matters. I have been looking at how to add a leather pouch to the secondhand belt I have obtained, which conveniently has a D-ring I use as a chatelaine for keys.

I am a proud Fanny pack wearer and I get incredible vibes from this convenient belt situation.

I found this video at just the right time! My leather working husband can make this and I will be making a cape from dragon fabric for our dragon obsessed grandaughter!

The "thing" that Bernadette uses to put the parallel lines on the belt is called a stitch groover, always use before the beveller so that you have a nice hard edge to guide it

I always wear my medieval pouch to festivals - so much easier than a handbag, safer than pockets and more stylish than a bumbag.

OMG! Bernadette with a Hammer I something in as not expecting. That belt holster thing is just Goals beautiful work.

As a bonus, your breadboard now has stamping marks that match those on your toolbelt.

Really laughed at this comment. Plus some black blobs as well. All the rest of us would have just thrown something down (newspaper, old cloth). Bernadette is the queen of making everything look so beautiful.

@@PlayerClarinet My guess: she doesn’t like to use overly modern tools if she can avoid it so disposable gloves are out, and skin cleans off or wears off much easier than dye off non-disposable gloves!

On the subject of the scissors, I've always wondered why there's a bit of tartan tied around one side.

Probably to let her know which are her current pair that are sharp. And usually sewers (especially if they live with other people) put a bit of fabric on them to say they're fabric scissors so don't use on anything except fabric! But since I think she lives alone I'm going with which are sharpest and she probably just likes the look of tartan

I always tie something on my current sewing scissors just to let everyone know don't touch or there will be consequences.

I have soft fabric on my scissors as a pad to make the metal less harsh against my skin, to stop them rubbing my finger and making it sore when doing a lot of cutting out.

Tying a bit of cloth or ribbon to sewing scissors also makes it easier to distinguish them from general purpose ones, which helps keep the sewing scissors sharp longer.

In my case, Both my general and sewing scissors look exactly the same- I just have red fabric on my fabric scissors to make them distinguishable.

Your channel is one of the few things that keep me going. I love your videos. My mental health isn't great. I want to learn to make clothes. I think it would be a great hobby got me.

wearing pockets like that is really the best. i don't have any made of leather, but the concept itself is brilliant. :) and yours look absolutely amazing.

I incorporated the use of a thigh bag a couple of years ago, 😊 best decision I have ever made! You see, I have asthma and tend to misplace my inhaler/purse quite frequently 😅… I now have a bag that I very literally cannot set down lol, I have not misplaced my bag since 😊. 10/10 highly recommend a thigh bag👍
