This video shows how much more cost effective it is to take a 50lb Mineral salt block and break it down into smaller 4ish lb mineral salt blocks. Also like I mentioned on our Facebook page I burnt out my charger so a big thank you to my Father in law for letting me borrow his corded drill.
I Had the kids help me add molasses to them. This really helps with the attracting deer in the first place (work better than apple blocks). • Top your mineral block...
Great project to get kids helping with your hunting. Mine still ask when we will be painting more blocks.

    I just did this last night. Thought about drilling or sawing, but used a masonry (4") chisel and 10# sledge. Took about a minute to split the block in half -clean break - maybe just got lucky, but much quicker.

  • @BuckPole

    The chisel idea works but there is two things I have found doing it this way. 1. The block break more even. 2. When you pour the molasses on it they soak into the holes and the deer will stay to lick it out. Chisels work really good with this if you are using a bigger bit and making bigger blocks.

    I'm still super scared of using a sawzall to cut them because even with a good cleaning I see what they do to drills. I'm to the point where I buy a $5 flee market drill, use bigger bits and mason chisels instead and drill 5-6 blocks so I have enough for a couple years. I just toss the drill because it seems like no amount of pre oiling and post cleaning seems to help.

  • @Jack-js7zc

    Brother if you’re worried about ruining saws or drills just use a hand saw, it’s even cheaper than buying a new drill and I’d guess it would take about the same time instead of drilling 50 holes through the block 😂

    Why not just put out the 50lb block? Even if you want to drill holes for molasses, cant you do it in the bigger block? I have never baited deer but now that I have my own land I want to start attracting deer to it. Last season sucked, I froze my ass off for 3 days and saw a total of 5 deer, all were running a hundred miles an hour, would like to give them a reason to slow down.

  • @BuckPole

    @BuckPole

    9 жыл бұрын

    You can do it to bigger blocks and it works. I personally have had my best success with the smaller blocks because it seems that it is harder for them to lick the molasses out of the small blocks with small holes. I know there are people out there that do block similar to the way I do them but they use 1/4's instead of 1/8's and they work well. If you want to hold deer take a second and look up hinge cutting and check out extreme deer habitats stuff.

  • @liamgapp2778

    @liamgapp2778

    TAC-Z if you are looking for more deer you should try and improve your habitat. In my opinion good habitat will attract more deer than baiting them will. If deer feel like your land is a safe zone from the other hunters in the woods they will stay there and you will see more deer and bigger deer. But its also not a bad idea to put a mineral block out as well.

    william trap Yeah I dont have enough woods to make a bedding area as my land is mostly pasture with a few small patches of woods. Seems like the pond is being used as i see tracks by it and have seen small groups of deer bedding in the woods in the middle of my field. I guess they can bed and then see a long distance? I am going to start with about a 1 acre food plot and maybe put in a feeder and some blocks. In about 2 more years I will be able to spend a lot more time out there, so will get more hardcore with it then. Thanks for your advice..

    TAC-Z Habitat and hunting pressure trump getting deer in front of the camera with salt blocks. This will bring them in and help them in the summer but once the velvet sheds you see a lot more does. Habitat work and planting edible winter bushes will have higher dividends.

I didnt know there was anything that you could plant for them to eat that would grow in the winter (in missouri).
