The Ulta I go to has these little mirrors with trash bins under them and a container full of disposal lip gloss appliers, mascara appliers, lipstick appliers, they also have Q-tips for eyeshadow. They're EVERYWHERE in the store and the employees are always walking around and watching the customers. The only things I've tried before is taking a Q-tip and rubbing some eye shadow on my arm

Pretty much the same way you test out ice-cream. You can even do doubles, just not going back in with the same tool you used and have applied to your skin.

Do you not get the concept here? Swatching is essentially putting a clean product against your dirty skin (seriously, don't get offended; you have things landing on you from the air all the time. No such thing as "100% clean"), and if you don't like it, you close it, now putting whatever was on your skin into the whole bottle, contaminating it. Let's just use a simple example here that takes away the initial response to the term "dirty." Say you just finished a delicious chocolate brownie with walnuts. You're mobile, walking through the store as you eat, and want to try on some make up. So you just swatch on the back of your hand, don't like the color, so you put it back. Now there is a high possibility of an allergen inside the product. Egg, milk, tree nut....if someone who is allergic does a swatch, now there's a high chance of allergic reaction, depending on their sensitivity. So no, don't "just swatch it." Either use a disposable applicator to sample, or just buy a sealed one and if you don't like it, either return it, or just toss it out.

As someone who's worked for these companies you can not blame all the workers and their sanitization process. Testers are a risk ALWAYS. You can't control people touching everything all the time. You can't safely sanitize something that's touched by so many people. When you go to a professional makeup artist they maintain their kits and prevent people from touching their kits. It's why I always suggest hiring a professional for events as opposed to getting your makeup done at a counter. This is why.

Mary Anderson if you get a sample from Sephora it's made from a tester on the floor. It's only new if it's a sachet or deluxe sample in the brand's packaging. If it's scooped into a little clear container where the artist writes down what it is for you, that's from a tester on the floor. Foundations in pumps and brow pomades are usually fine to sample because people aren't sticking their hands in the actual product. Powder products, lip products and eye pencils and mascaras are your biggest vulnerability when it comes to bacteria.

I've suspected this for years! As young women growing up, my mother taught my sisters and I never to eat after people and never try any makeup that is placed out in the public for sampling! In other words, DO NOT use or eat 'food or cosmetics' that someone else has already used or eaten! Even to this day, I will open a lipstick and if the tip of it has been tampered with or 'used' I will put it back and find one that's 'normal' and has never been touched! Humans can be nasty! Just think of the people out there who (unfortunately) suffer with constant 'cold sores' (herpes) and there they go trying on all of those samples of "lip gloss" and "lipstick" that are there in the cosmetic department! Huh, "NO THANK YOU!" JUST DON'T DO IT !!!

In China testers are behind the counter where you need to press a button for store employee to unlock it for you, and then they will give you QTips or whatever it applies to the product, for example for mascara they will give you a disposable mascara wand for you to try it out and no double dip as well. They won't allow you to use the tester directly on your skin or with your hand.

I've pretty much only ever shopped drugstore for makeup, so the first time I even got to try testers in store was a year ago. All the built-in applicators had been ripped off, and there were disposable ones placed here and there in the store. Unfortunately, my moronic, unobservant self didn't notice the disposable applicators until after I'd use the broken nibs to swatch on my hands. I feel so guilty, even a year later, because I introduced extra bacteria (although I already new there was almost definitely a lot in the testers already) into products when I didn't have to.

I couldn’t resist watching this video even though I’m almost 29 years old and I’ve NEVER used any make on my face other than a touch of an eyeliner pencil at weddings or parties I was invited to! :) It always blows my mind when I see women and very young girls wearing full makeup and jamming salons and spas to do everything form hair and nails...to facials and scrubs that goes deeper than the outer skin layer...and NONE seems to care that everything used on them in the process has been used a million times before on so many others I travel with a plane seat cover and my own bed sheets...and NEVER slept under the covers of a hotel bed no matter how fancy it is. I cover their bed with my sheets and ask for several clean sheets (usually come pressed and folded), to use as a blanket over mine. I’m not being a germaphobe, I simply exercise commons sense when the cleaning methods of heavily used public items is VERY questionable...and I wasn’t there to witness it done. Think of it as simple as “just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there”...and I’m talking about other people’s germs making friends with some more of many other people’s germs...for so long...and now they have generations of their super germ offsprings!! :)
