Make your Repot COUNT! Post-Repotting Orchid Care: Tips & Keys to Success Care Guide

#orchids #orchidcare #repotting
Worried about your orchid after repotting? This video provides crucial tips for optimal post-repot care, maximizing your orchid's chances of thriving.
Key Takeaways: Flushing is essential: Regularly flush the pot for the next 6 weeks, especially with new bark media. This removes debris, promotes root oxygenation, and counteracts potential dryness.
Reduce stress factors: Dial down light, temperature, and fertilizer levels by 30-50% compared to pre-repot care. This helps the orchid recover from stress and avoid issues like water loss or stunted root growth.
Monitor progress: Observe new root growth and leaf health. Some leaf drop and pseudobulb shriveling might occur initially, but this is usually normal.
Prioritize root health: Consider sacrificing blooms if root growth seems weak. Orchids prioritize reproduction, so blooming might happen even if the plant struggles.
Seaweed supplement: Apply a seaweed solution regularly to encourage root growth and maintain hormone production in the orchid.
Patience is key: Orchids are slow growers. Allow 6 months, or even a year for some, to show positive responses to repotting. "Doing nothing" might be a good sign, indicating the orchid is successfully adapting. This video empowers you to provide the best possible post-repotting care for your orchid, ensuring a smooth recovery and healthy growth! #orchideen #orquideas #orchideenpflege #beginners #tips #tipsandtricks #tricks #tutorial #care

I hate repotting, maybe that's why I don't do it as often as I should. I'm realizing the houseplants are so much easier. Lift from pot, shake a bit, stick in new pot, add new media, water, done.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Houseplants are much easier! Even in Semi Hydro! I have one pot of houseplant that is in semi hydro from the moment I was the caretaker of the Phal Maximilian. Of course it was in a basket with houseplants that are NOT compatible at all. Plonked them in to leca and self watering and... well.. done! Have not repotted since 2017😬 The little palm tree has tripled in size and I think its a croton variety, has also grown substantially. For reasons, I keep those 🥲 hope you wake up to a fabYOUlous day, Michael! Thank you so much for watching and for all your support 🫶🏼❤️🌸 P.S.: I spoke to COSTCO but they saw my subscriber count and deemed me irrelevant, so they won't be changing their hours any time soon 😉😂😘

Aaah, lost my earlier comment. Excellent series with all the extra things to watch out for, that are so easy to miss. I earlier finished a repot on a plant that I suspect hadn’t been done in a very long time it’s fairly new to my collection. Of course it was in very compacted moss and completely pot bound. Soooo the repot ended with a division one going into leca. Three or four pot changes (in my head) finally chose pot I wanted only to realize I no longer had enough leca. Aargh!!! So quick mental change and into chunky bark with moss. Phew. Good thing I had prepared her for the repot much like the steps you laid out in this wonderful series Love and blooms to you

Debbie!! Hi 😍💐 oh! That happens a LOT... you have a plan and then BOOM! Curve ball! 😓🙄😆 BUT, I am glad that the little prep as best as possible tip helped to trouble shoot there and then. With the large repots I have to do this year, I am concerned about my leca stash as well. I know that one orchid I won't have a problem washing the leca while I repot and reuse for the new pot, but the cymbidium? That is going to take some serious leca stash... however, I have already got Plan A in motion for that one and Plan B will be executed if necessary. That repot is going to kick my butt 😅 Thank you so much for your kind and positive feedback on this mini series! Hope it gets lots of eyeballs on it 🤞🏼 and thank you for watching! My post repot divas are most definitely my dendrobiums. They're always so melodramatic and sulky 🙄. I must admit that this is partly due to my prior inexperience and just uprooting them without waiting for signs of new root growth first 😅. It's no wonder existing roots that are adapted to specific conditions would protest at being completely relocated and sometimes into very different growing media 😅. I think I've learned from my mistakes, though. I cringe in horror at the thought of what I put those poor plants through 😱😰😨🤢. Also, on a sad note, someone broke a bud off my Tetraspis C1. This will be a first-time bloomer for me, and these are much anticipated blooms 🤢🤮 😭. There are still 11 buds left, but I felt the loss acutely. All the months of hard work and effort... every bud is precious. I suppose I should cheer up since the entire spike wasn't broken 🤐🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Denise, hi 😍💐 oh, you are not alone! We have all been there, thinking that we are doing what is best for the orchids from our perspective. Growing orchids in pots back in the 90s was a huge learning curve for me. Having them in the trees and only monkeys to contend with (or not, because you don't want to get in the way of a monkey as cute as they are!) my second collection taught me so much when it comes to orchids in pots. Dendrobiums are tough cookies, but yes, once they are on the decline, it is not always easy to get them to bounce back to the point that we are comfortable about them being ok. I sorry to hear about that bud, BUT.... you have 11 more to go! 🥳🥳 and yes, the spike wasn't broken!! Not like my 2 phalaenopsis pulchra spikes that the birdies thought were practical as a perch! 🥲 I so want that orchid to bloom, but here we are.... still no branching. As they say here 'vamos a ver'! The months of hard work and then something happens... it truly feels like a punch in the gut when you see it 😤 You enjoy the testraspis blooms, lovely lady! I had the phal Insolence 2.0 opening her blooms, and a bee came and pollinated them ... they collapsed! Meh! I don't have a decent pic either 😢 feels like our orchids need to be in a Fort Knox type of space 😅 thank you so much for taking time out of your day, already, to watch this video! Truly appreciate you and all the kindness, friendship and support that you so generously give! 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@NinjaOrchids Thanks for the moral support, Nina 🥰. Only fellow orchid growers can truly empathise with the pain! I was so sad to see the demise of your pulchra's spikes 😮‍💨. Hopefully, there'll be some branching 🙏. It's that same feeling I get when I watch videos of orchid growers with pets. Especially when I hear people saying things like my cat ate/chewed on my orchid leaves or broke a spike off this orchid that blooms only once a year 😵‍💫...I just can't imagine the level of patience that takes after all the long months of patiently nurturing those growths and blooms. I used to be super obsessed with getting two cats, but now, I just don't think I could safeguard my orchids from them. Someone I know suggests buying a mansion and having separate flora and fauna wings 🤣. Definitely not on the salary of a humble scientist 😅 . I can dream, though 😄😄. Hopefully, your lovely pets are gracious towards your collection. Hope you had a lovely day. I'm awaiting the livestream playback video as I wasn't able to stay too long today, apart from a quick hello. Had a lovely family trip and picnic by the lake. Take care, Nina! I appreciate you so much 💜.

That's the thing.... years, months, weeks, days... the count down to blooms being imminent and then something happens. It takes quite a hit. We never get used to it. BUT, and if I may, after loosing so many orchids since circumstances changed in 2020, I have come to be grateful for anything that my orchids are able to give me, and if that means a spike is broken, then, either there is a chance of branching (all I have to do is wait longer) OR, the orchid has time to rest, gather strength and then start with vegetative growth sooner, incl. roots. I now look at it that way... its a bummer, but for my self preservation and not get even more depressed, I try to eliminate the disappointment in my gut by quickly switching my mindset to 'at least I will get roots from that' and then I live in hope for better days. Don't get me wrong, it sucks and hurts and sometimes I cry because of not getting the blooms afterall, however, I have to quickly move on, or else.... 😓🥲 wouldn't that mansion just be amazing? Wings of large conservatories leading off the main entrance? Flooded with light... high ceilings... oh, I better stop 😆 but I hear you! I studied architecture and could cobble the plans for refurb together, take down walls to create an open space, leaving supporting pillars as interest, maybe adding some more half pillars to resemble a crumbled pillar, have climbing orchids growing on those with a little water feature coming out of the top, water trickling down the pillar gently.... just your comment and well, if you are ever in a situation where you would like me to check out and recreate a space like that, hit me up 😬🥲 wow!! I really better stop now!! 🤣❤️

I was wondering if I could go into detail about an issue I have with my brassavola orchid hybrid. It’s new and there is kind of a decent amount of info to consider but I actually believe you will take these things into consideration and take me seriously as I am very nervous now and somewhat Ina limbo. Not sure the best way to ask you specifics, but I imagine not in the comments If this is something you maybe have the time for, I would so greatly appreciate it! I believe I even probably have a good idea of what to do and when, at least in theory and maybe just need a nudge of reassurance. I don’t think it will be very time involved other than reading and I’m already making you do a lot of that if you choose to comment on this >_ Thank you for the excellent tips cause this 3 part series made so much sense that I now FINALLY have made up my mind on what orchids should be repotted of the ones I have/which shouldn’t be and also finally feel confident about a couple suckers in the post phase. Plus. I thank you for your videos because I also now feel I can determine the major factors in why the my are sulking. ^^ -L

Ciao Nina. Ecco pronto pronto il mio quesito. Devo rinvasare una delle mie 8 phalaenopsis: fiore bianco piccolo, radici SOTTILI diversamente dalle altre che le hanno di spessore std. Ora è in mix bark e leca e vorrei metterla in roccia lavica SH.

Buonanotte

You have such informative videos, Nina! I always watch them more than once because I pick up tips that I might miss the first time through. I have a Blc rescue orchid (from a friend) that I repotted about 6 months ago. It currently has three buds ready to open. I’m pretty sure I should have cut the spike and allowed it to focus on root growth but I plan to let the first bud open, take pictures, then cut the spike. Is there any benefit to cutting the flowers off at this late stage when it has already put the energy into growing the flowers? The reason I didn’t cut the spike immediately is because something seems really off with this plant and I suspect it may have a virus or bacterial infection.

Hi Linda 😍💐 thank you so very much for your kind feedback on the information, I truly appreciate knowing that your time is not wasted when you watch 🫶🏼 There is nothing wrong with getting a first bloom to open, especially if the orchid gives suspicious vibes. Actually, it is best to wait for the buds to either separate from the spike, or first bloom to open and then cut the spikes or else other issues could arise, which I explain in this video (in case you want to have a look see as to the logic behind what I am saying and then also be able to know what to do, when for any other orchid moving forward) kzread.info/dash/bejne/hHaku8WplrLeds4.html I really hope that your orchid is only slow getting out of the gates, and that it is not a stress spike, or worse case scenario, that it is virused! 🤞🏼🙏🏼 wishing you a wonderful weekend Linda, know that your support is so appreciated ❤️🌸

🌸🥷🏼 Nina San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good late afternoon, beautiful lady! I hope that your Monday was beautiful 🫶🏼 Sogo Vivien 😓 I am so sorry to hear that... once they struggle they are really hard to get to recover because they are NOT generous root growers, and I find that the roots grow super slowly, which gives us NO grace to help in recovery! I would try again, if they are not that pricey for you. You have ideal conditions when it comes to humidity, 🌸🥷🏼Nina San. Personally, when I decide if I want to get a replacement, I consider if I know what went wrong and if I can fix it for the 2.0. You know what went wrong, and you can fix it... so, if I were in your climate, I would try again. I have not replaced mine, because, while I know how to do better next time because she was growing well until I messed up, I was always on edge for her wellbeing during my winters. So, don't be shy to try again and know that I am here for anything you would like to run by me when / if you do get a replacement. When you water your plants, do you flush them right through every time as I’m in lava rock?

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    2 ай бұрын

What I usually do is, flush the pot before adding fertilizer into the reservoir. BUT, if you are on a wet dry cycle, you want to do the opposite. You want to fertilize first, and then after an hour or before the lava rock on the surface dries out, then flush. It limits any salt accumulation at the surface of the pot. Especially as temperatures start to rise. You want to flush before the surface of the pot is completely dry even if the roots are still wet. They have had time to absorb the nutrients, so flushing shortly after fertilizing won't affect the nutrients that have already been absorbed. I hope this makes sense and is helpful 🫶🏼
