Thanks Steve, you've smashed it here! I've been able to play with my Quest 3 over the weekend and it's been a lot of fun. It's packaged with technology. I tried your settings and for me it looks better than the G2 now - you do take a hit with performance, running VR in High-End instead of Ultra on my 4090 but it's smooth and amazing to look around the cockpit and scenery with clarity accross the whole view.

Just played on Ultra, and it's obvious headset still lack pixels :D I hope Apple will solve this..

Thank you for this. I am running a 3080ti and do the 940 with resolution at around 2500x2800 in game. While it may not be as clear as a you have it, it does look pretty good and runs super smooth too. Thanks for sharing your findings and also given credit to any other youtubers who shared tips with yourself.

Tried these settings with rtx 360ti on the quest 2, much smoother and clear than what I've been used to, and runs slightly cooler.

Sorry folks, I forgot to say this is via Link cable ALSO, it turns out many people are having great success with these settings, even with a lower end GPU.

Up until today, I had planned to keep the g2 exclusively for sim racing and MSFS. However, I received a tip today regarding settings similar to the ones you've shown, and I tested them using the link cable. It was truly a game changer. However, when using MSFS, I experience some flickering in the sky when outside the airplane and the clouds do have some minor artifacts. I suspect it might be related to ASW. I will definitely try your exact settings and hopefully be able to sell the g2 :) the e2ec is really nice with the Q3

I followed exactly the same steps but for my Quest 2/RTX 7900 and... 😱 OMG!!! It improved 100%!! And I still have 42-45 fps... I cannot wait to try Quest 3...

Thanks a lot for your settings, with my overlocked 4070 ti (+140 and +1000) and my overclocked 5950x I was able to reach fps 30 to 40 with a resolution override from 3000x3ish that's the max I can achieve to maintain 30-40 fps, but now the details and the quality is absolutely superb as you describe in your video !! 🙂

Hi, would be nice if you could produce a full setup guide, as I'm not familiar with OpenXR, don't have Virtual Desktop, and I'm only using Oculus link with a USB3 cable. No Steam VR either. My 3080ti is really struggling so with a decent render resolution, in MSFS I had to turn down the quality to medium or low! There must be a better way! Last time I played MSFS 2020 in desktop mode at 1440p I can bump settings up to high or ultra for 50-60fps. Thanks!

Hi Steve … after watching your video I decided to abandon Virtual DesktopXR (beta) and try again link. So a big thank you. I’m using wifi so dropped to 500mbps and went straight to 72hz - so 36 ASW locked in debug tool. Now the G2 is fully replaced with Q3 I am very impressed. Was hoping VDXR would be a winner but SSW is not a patch on ASW which is a shame.

Hey Steve, U R my 2day's hero: Got my Quest 3 last week. First impression was super (compared to my old lady, G2). I tried a lot seetings for the quest. Some settings made my Quest 3 to a nightmare. Had no idea. Made a Windows recovery yesterday. Horrible performance and VR quality. Used VD and airlink. Got the best results, for my opinion. After the recovery yesterday I made only the config chances like you (again the proof: less is more). Oh my goodness! Never expected this kind of performance AND VR PICTURE QUALITY! 2day it will be a soft fine tuning config day. Will chance the resolution to find a perfect sweetspot, for my 7800X3D and 7900 XTX. Finally the 7900 XTX is the perfect and powerfull GPU, now without any doubts! Thanks!

I have a 4090 and Pico 4 that I use via Virtual Desktop, how would this compare to Q3 and these settings? I was going to get the Q3 until I saw your first video on it, have you changed your mind in comparison to Pico 4 and these new settings?

I turned off link sharpening, and only use the FSR sharpening in OpenXR Toolkit... it seems to make sense to only sharpen in one place. I am curious if there is a difference between OpenXR supersampling and MSFS render resolution. Any thoughts there?

Would you mind sharing what you use to record in VR with your Q3? I am struggling to get a good recording using OBS. First I tried recording direct from screen the right eye, but the scale was super blurry no matter what I did. And then I switched to Oculus Mirror and getting the dreaded stutters in it already again.

Re: 80/40 fps, it's worth mentioning 7800X3D can actually sustain 60 or 72 fps if the GPU can keep up. (Or for those who prefer smoothness)

Thanks for all of your videos. I have a question that I am wondering if you can help with. I just purchased a Quest 3. I run my PC with a I7 10700 K and 32 Gb ram but only a 2060 gpu and of course it if not performing well. I would love to go to a 4080 or 4090 but the budget can't handle, and my case is not big enough, only enough room for a 2-fan model. I am looking at 4060 ti 16 gb or a 4070. Just wondering if you think either of these would make a significant improvement and which you would recommend. Or will the 4060 ti 8gb do the trick. Thanks Kevin from Canada

I imagine that raising the bitrate that high doesn't actually reduce your fps, it's just that absurd resolution. I hope a less taxing solution is discovered.

Great Pro tips but it's a collision of two budgets... the best value VR headset needs the most expensive GPU... But for the ones who do find enough money for a RTX 4090 can save lots of money on the VR headset so it's all in a point of view ;-) Nice advice thank you

yes don't need to spend extra $$$ on a Pimax Crystal to get a sharp image as well.

How is the result of using the Quest 3 with these settings compared to a HP reverb 2 with it's common settings (using a RTX 4090)? Is it worth to "ugrade"" from a G2?

One thing I’m curious about when trying to get optimal detail and sharpness is what impact the CPU has? I’m running an 11700k at 5GHz all cores with a 4080 (and quest 3) with the link cable. I’m not super sampling at the moment so running at default headset resolution and have dialed everything in so that it’s butter smooth 90% of the time, but I still get some stutters on some turns when looking out the side window. Or when scanning my head around the windows. Especially if I roll the aircraft more quickly. I’m trying to work out if the cpu is limiting performance, or whether some more tweaking is just needed. Ironically, I get the best performance running everything at ultra. If I start to turn down any graphics settings at all, then stuttering increases. It’s at its worst on medium and low settings when it becomes a total stutter fest! Be good to hear feedback from others running similar cpus. It’s confusing me when deciding if a better cpu is needed when the sim actually runs at its best on the ultra preset.

Well that bandwidth tweak has turned out to be very interesting. This has all but eliminated the stuttering I mentioned in my post above. Can now pan my head all round the cockpit any way I want and not have any stuttering except in certain situations. I'd say that takes me to 95 - 99% no micro stutters during flight on ultra settings. Nice one.

interesting. I know you don't mess too much with sim settings, but saw you don't use sharpening CAS NIS FSR in toolkit. If you still fly DLSS Quality, try NIS at 20%. Using both NVidia tools of DLSS Quality and NIS 20% frees up FPS and looks very good. Beating CAS or FSR or native sim AMD FSR. Effectively pushing sharpening through your tensor algorithms.

Thanks for the shout out mate. Interesting that you prefer sharpening quality, I will go back and check again. It's possible that Quest Pro looks better on normal due to the lower resolution maybe, but or perhaps I had another setting conflicting with it. I will check and get back to you! UPDATE - Yeah quality definitely looks worse to me on both the Quest 3 and Pro. I'm sure Shark said the same about the Pro a few weeks ago too. I wonder if it's a conflict with other sharpening options in Nvidia panel or Steam or something? Enabling quality, or turning off completely both look really ugly to me, whilst normal looks great. I suspect other aliasing options or settings elsewhere are the cause...

For my pro I edited out MSFS Post Processing sharpening. To turn this default off, do the following: Open your BASE FOLDER location for MSFS, and at the bottom you will see a file called: UserCfg.opt Use Notepad ++ to open file. Once open, scroll down to PostProcess In that range, the fourth heading will be Sharpen 1 Make that 1 to a 0, and then press save in Notepad ++ You are done, and can close Notepad ++ I'm sure that the next run of MSFS for you, will be a much more beautiful screen rendition, of the graphics. To turn Sharpen back on...merely go back and enter a 1 where you put a 0, of you prefer the look as default. Press Notepad ++ SAVE and you are back to a default view for this Post Process setting.

great finely cracked it with this video, as everything keeps updating, the new steam link is not as good a VD and openXR no stutters a clear with 4500 eye resolution on a i9 rtx4080 16gb FYI

I can see that you used Oculs link cable which is still only connected to USB-C. not to GPU directly like PICO 3 Nelo Link or Rerverb G2. Is there visible limitation with this Oculus link connection?

Which one do you recommend between the Quest 3 Reverb G2 and Varjo Aero in terms of color and contrast visibility?

Why is there a difference in aspect ratio between the Oculus software and the Openxr Toolkit resolution? Is it "per eye" also or not? And if the actual resolution of the Quest 3 is 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, why does the Oculus app default (1.0x) at 3712 x 1984? Can you shed some light on this?

I have 5800x3d, 32gb ram, 4070 Ti And outside the cockpit i see really bad with codex x264 500mb also 960 and 72hz Can you do a config guide please for openxr newbies? With the pico 3 same config, i could see perfect, don´t know why now looks so bad (flickering trees, blurry) even at 72hz and i have performance headroom close to 0% thanks!

Curious if the 4080 can hold a steady 40fps with these settings. It's far enough for my non-VR needs 🙂

Don't think so, with Turbo on in XR Toolkit ASW seems not to work properly (see message in Toolkit). It was for me not more FPS disabling ASW but removing some artifacts in the sky. @@VRFlightSimGuy

Ej man, how bad is the performance hit compared to a native PCVR headset?

Great Stuff. But I think that resolution is a bit overkill.

If we’re playing anything other than the flight simulator, should I still leave the super sampling at one in the oculus app and always use the in game options?

Setting the res to 1x in ouclus software is actually undersampling and pople say it's bad because no matter what supersampling you then sen in the toolkit it'll still get downsampled to that low 1x value. So it's better to max that slider first and then supersample accordingly.

yeah, the max resolution is basically native display resolution. but you need a demon GPU. I personally prefer to max display resolution and use DLSS if possible.

It's the same as using the override feature in MSFS, it's just you are doing it in one place, instead of two, plus, you can change it easily on the fly (pun intended)

@@VRFlightSimGuy Actually I don't think it is. I used to think the same but I saw a high level discussion about it and apparently the oculus slider sets the baseline. No matter how high you supersample it'll still get downsampled by oculus software to the value you set in the slider resuluting in lowered quality since 1x is actually undersampling.

@@b00rak Yeah some guy on reddit suggested turning the slider to max and he set pixel per display override in the debug tool to 1.2. That was his suggestion anyway until they update the app for the quest 3 (Hopefully).

Is there a settings guide for the in game settings?

Could you check in the Oculus Debug Tool Performance HUD to see if you are actually getting the 940Mbps over the cable? I have tried starting from 200Mbps and going higher and higher, but at ~300Mbps the encoder starts struggling to keep up.

IF you have a powerful GPU, then the Quest 3 can look as good as the G2, but with better lenses. But for most people on lower end GPU's, it's probably best to stick with a DP connection, which will always look better than USB C connection

Hi slightly confused , you say override the super sampling in xr toolkit by changing the render resolution and you say you are using 3657 x 3953 but your screenshot says 3506 x 3789.? Is that where you change it , and would that be worth doing in the Quest 2 ? Also I only have a 3080 is that going to give me a worthwhile upgrade from the Quest2? Have a play around with the resolution, especially with a 3080, it's best to experiment and find the right resolution best for your GPU. Make sure to restart VR in msfs each time you change it though.

No Steve is using the link cable (aka Meta Link) which connects the headset to the base Oculus app running on the PC through the use of the Oculus OpenXR runtime libraries. OpenXR Toolkit is a companion application which can tweak the settings OpenXR uses like apply a fixed foveated renderer or supersample the resolutioin. Virtual Desktop streaming is something completely different. This works with Virtual Desktop running on the VR headset and running the Virtual Desktop Streamer software on the PC. To run something like MSFS you need to switch to the SteamVR OpenXR runtime library though as Virtual Desktop uses this instead - it doesn't matter if you bought MSFS from the MS Store or Steam.

More or less what I commented on your last video about Quest 3 and DCS, you can set it to 960 actually

Does your battery still drain? Even with lino cable I only get like 2.5 hrs

Is the FOV-Tangent Multiplier setting important ?? Mine keeps resetting back to 0; 0 even when in administrator mode

Unfortunately, step one for me is upgrading from my GTX 1080. I can still remember when it was the GPU to kill all GPUs, and now it's a complete relic.

I was same, i was running about 20 fps on flight sim (non-VR) and it was still smooth , upgraded to 4090 though.

Looking good! Thanks :) My quest 3 will arrive tomorrow. I will be trying make an ok use of my 3080. If not I will probably have to get a 4090 before the Dof Reality H3 arrives in a few weeks... Flight sim is expensive... Could someone clarify regarding the software? If I uninstall all VR software, what do I need to put in place for this to run? As far as I have understood it would be: Open XR? Open XR Toolkit Virtual Desktop (both in PC and headset) The meta app Steam VR? Or are any of these redundant for MS fligthsim with Quest 3?

I'll try this tonight for DCS - tried connecting up first time yesterday to DCS in my q3, but it seemed really grainy and low res, like worse than a natively run game - but I didnt change the settings at all. I did notice after (Battery died), that I was at 100mbps default limit tho so that wont have helped either (mind you 4k blurays can stream fine at eg 100mbps across wired - so shouldn't be THAT bad surely?) Anyway - how do you bring up the overlay over the flight sim please?

4k Bluerays can buffer. A game has to manage your input and react to it instantly while rendering the frames. Blueray has to play a video and can use generous buffers as long as it buffers the audio at the same latency rate you won't notice.

You didn't mention how you're connecting your headset to the PC. Is it wired? Airlink? Virtual desktop?

I tried this and while the clarity is amazing, i get a wobbly effect when looking at the instrument panel or looking left and right. I tried with ASW on auto or off and within the sim I tried Motion Reprojection on Depth and off. I run a 3090, any suggestions?

Can you show the performance overlay from debug tool options ? as the motion to photon latency will be horrific doing this

Latency does not really matter with slow-paced games like MSFS.

@@JoernR I beg to differ, vr is more than a simple display infront of your eyes, if the world that's displayed falls behind your natural motion it's just not believable, regardless of graphics or how 'slow paced' the game is. Considering it's already going to be bad not making framerate in msfs, forcing considerably more latency again ontop of that with bitrate encode and decoding delay is just nasty.

@@virtuallyreal - Absolute agree if it comes to fast-paced games. But flight simulation does not produce fast movements, thus a *stable* framerate of about 40 Hz should be quite sufficient if you don't go the Maverick way. ;)

Hi. Got a quest 3 and having problems with msfs (Microsoft store not steam). Using USB link cable and oculus software. Msfs starts and has the alt tab shortcut to start vr but vr dosnt start outputting to headset when pressed. Any ideas?

what is the graphics setup that you have for VR in MSFS app?

Hello😉 I still have quite some blurry textures on the panel. In DCS, i have no problem but in Msfs, i still have some blurry text on the panel. For example, the text on the autopilot buttons are unreadable. Any suggestions?

Maybe you have not followed the settings precisely? Clarity and textures looks incredible to me. Remember the panel has some SDE so it's not going to be absolutely crisp but it's pretty decent and looks great compared to my old G2. Colours look more natura tool, bigger FoV and great edge-to-edge clarity.

How can I use this technique in other games? How to add other games in VR toolkit? ( does work with mfd) The whole pcvr setup so confusing for me lol

I can't tell any difference turning up the bitrate tp 960 virtual desktop actually looks better for me then the Link cable

Anyone like to discuss the latency figures? Over 120. Fps is at 80 solid but photon latency hitting over 100 when it should be around 55-60. This playing Automobolist2. Solid fps with 40% headroom. This is on 13900k 4090 and 2.5gb link connection using official fibre cable. Knocked it down to 500 and latency dropped to 48-55. Bboy.

Is this over Virtual Desktop?

So I am assuming your wired, no airlink? What are you msfs settings in game? What are you Nividia settings? Seems like you have only done half the work in this video? Thx but would have been nice to get all the settings Steve. :-p

@@VRFlightSimGuy You know Steve, I like you, and I like most of your video's, accept for this one, you got to admit you half assed it. You could have easily mentioned to us 4080 and 4090 quest 3, msfs simmers and newbies your nividia and msfs settings. Just saying....I do appreciate what you have been doing for the KZread community but hopefully this will knock you in the head alittle and question yourself to maybe just take a few more minutes to complete a setup guide video. Cheers.

When I put bitrate to 940 oculos on the vr just loads infinitely if I drop it down to 800 or 700 it loads up but is incredibly choppy in the oculos menu, if I set it to 10k and above oculos runs smooth again as normal but there 0 difference in games. Tried all settings etc to bring clarity to assetto but nothing has made a difference, I can't even make the game look nice just to see if it will be clear n crisp but but low af frames and for the life of me I can't. I'm on a 3060 oc v2 12gb card coukd it be that the quest 3 is just to powerful for my gpu? I've seen a lot of people running the quest 3 on 1050ti's but also even more upgrading to a 4070ti and that being the fix for any and every graphical issue

This setup will close the Crystal sharpness or it is too far from that ?

@@VRFlightSimGuyIt also looks better than my HP Reverb with an 3080 Ti, through Virtual Desktop however. I think the lenses require less oversampling and that compensates for the additional processing. I get more fps also.

You can run those debug settings with a 3080 fine (and I suspect less) been doing it for years with quest 2 and now quest 3, max limit is 960@@VRFlightSimGuy

@@VRFlightSimGuy perhaps it's the debug tool settings and combination of resolution override. I don't use that in open XR toolkit. I just run the maximum resolution from the Oculus app. That said, I have tried the override resolution and bumping it up and can take it higher. But it does really seem to hit the GPU then.

What is your are graphic settings in the MFS? I have the same setup and I want to copy you config exactly.

I had to knock my settings back from Ultra to High-End to get smooth frames. I suspect Steve has applied a more nuisenced configuration which is much more performant than Ultra but better looking than High-End. If you have a 4090 I would say start with High-End and do some tweaking!

you still have that 3080 pc ?

940 highly depends on your usb slot and cable you use, at 900 my headset would get stuck on loading screen to open the link 800 fixed it ( i have 4090)

All this praise for Quest 3 has me second-guessing my decision to order the Aero lol

The crystal has the best visuals if you can afford it, second choice Aero…. Big screen beyond you have to buy base stations by the time you get done it’s about $1300 for everything so you might as well spend 200 more and get the crystal or save some money and get the Aero… still a great headset

Was this wired or wireless ?

I am counting on you to make my experience in the meta 3 much better than at current.

to say i'm dissapointed with my Q3 paired up with my brand new build (7800x3D, RTX4090, 64GB, Wifi 6E) is an understatement... seems the harder i try, the worse the VR experience gets... it's like you're chasing a dragon.
