In this project I will combine a SIM5320 3G module with an Arduino and a piezoelectric transducer as a shock sensor in order to create a security tracking system that will send you the location of your precious vehicle via SMS when it is moved around without you knowing it.

Now add a feature to send a text to your bike and a simple relay to kill the ignition/spark plug fuse/circuit at will by sending an SMS. Bystanders generally ignore alarms and noise makers, but someone standing in the middle of the road with a vehicle that won't work gets lots of attention, and stranding a thief is a good way to get them to abandon the effort.

Actually the very next thing should be an open source app that can convert the long/lat to an address onto a map. Then a kill switch.

I used to occasionally install some of the pro GPS alarm systems for a couple buy-here-pay-here used car dealers, and also used the alarms to do a few repos, years ago. Mapping coordinates is fairly easy with google. The problem is that GPS location fails many times when a triangulated cellular location will give better results (both are used on most high end pro systems). If I had a choice I'd prefer cellular triangulated location with its associated immobilization ability. If the vehicle is taken to a garage, or into a wooded, or hilly area the GPS system can be quite annoying. At least that was my experience when trying to quietly track down a car at 2-3am,.. on more than one occasion. When you've got a cellular system the versatility goes way higher because you can choose when and where to disable or target the problem. I've repo'd a guy's car in a small town when he went into the Walmart supercenter to shop. He had made violent threats, after getting several months behind on payments, and was being evasive by double parking to block any repo attempt at his home and work. That kind of versatility is priceless in my opinion. It lets you decide when, where, and how to limit confrontation with a potentially hazardous and threatening individual.

In the current setup can't receive SMS, because the Arduino output activates the MOSFET that gives the gsm module ground. You know what kills the power for ignition? A key.

David Andersson It would require a design alteration. There are many ways to short a spark plug circuit. You could send enough power to blow a fuse, short the plug to ground, or short the condenser capacitor just to name a few. Unfortunately on a bike it depends on the design. There are less options with a stator and mechanical ignition, but it is still very possible. I prefer to try to hide my security mods as much as possible. When it comes to anything with a fuel pump (not most bikes), I cut power to the fuel pump. The vehicle will still have power and will turn over but won't stay running after 1-3 min. Best of all, it strands a thief in the middle of the road or parking lot depending on how much fuel is in the lines and system. The cheapest and most effective anti theft solution is to simply hide an ignition kill switch completely out of sight and somewhere awkward to reach. The most important factor is to completely integrate the switch wiring into the factory wiring harness and make it look exactly like the factory did it. This is why most aftermarket alarm systems are a total joke. The monkeys that install them use tape and zip ties to hang most alarm systems under the driver's side dash. Every splice and alteration is extremely obvious. All anyone has to do is cut the wires to the main box, that will stop the noise maker. Then find the relay that always gets taped right next to the alarm under the dash. That's your ignition switch wiring cheat sheet. There's no need to learn how to bypass the factory ignition wiring when the alarm installer has already attached them to a relay that stands out like a hooker at Sunday Mass. The only thing left is the ignition key chip system installed by the factory. It's actually harder to figure out how to bypass the ignition on cars that don't have an alarm because all the wiring becomes much more confusing. The difficulty of finding what wires control the ignition are part of the security design from the vehicle manufacturer. Aftermarket alarms defeat this feature. Alarms are not not as great as they may first appear, but at the same time most of the people that are dumb enough to steal are not the brightest individuals.

I built one of those in 1995, long before anyone else had done it! I used a PIC 16F877. It had various modes & could handle secondary tracking by a control room & also allow immobilization of the vehicle being tracked by the chase team. There were quite a number of additional features. I tried to sell it but nobody understood what I had designed! Secondly, the cost of the components was high back then! Much simpler to do now with arduino & cheap gps units. Whole thing can be built cheaply now!

You can eliminate some false positives by modifying your Arduino code a little. That way if the wind blows the motorcycle or any "earth quakes" happen then it won't notify you. To do this, take a double GPS reading with a delay, if the two coordinates are the same the motorcycle has not moved and you don't need to send a message. If the two GPS coordinates are different each time then it means someone is moving your motorcycle. Should save on text messages even though they are cheap.

Great video as always Great Scott! A question / suggestion.... Is there a reason you couldn't set it up to send the gps coords if / when it receives an sms text message? It seems even more useful in that configuration as you are not reliant on the bike moving to pinpoint it's location. You could simply message the device and get a response as to its current or last known coords...

That would require a bit more logic than that as GPS isn't necessarily the most accurate all the time. Even if the antennae is completely static, a GPS read 5 minutes apart could yield slightly different locations. P.S. *!= :)

Actually, if they break into his house to steal the keys, this is safer. They don't expect this second feature so they'll just use the key switch from the bike itself despite heaving the key.

  • @firefly618

If they steal the bike they are probably going to force the main key into the ON position, either by breaking the cylinder with a screwdriver, making a contact, or lock picking. Having a second hidden key is the best solution. Even a simple hidden throw switch would have worked.

I think, the piezo would work on analog pin too, I remember creating a simple Arduino device. The harder you tapped the piezo, servo would move to certain position. If you tapped softly, servo would go to around 20, if you tapped super-hard, it would go to 180.

Nice. I'm looking at doing something similar, but I need much less power drain. I'm probably going to use an ADXL362 accelerometer, which draws micro- or nano-amps, depending on how you use it. I think I will be able to set it up to power-off everything except the accelerometer until an acceleration threshold is reached, meaning battery life would be very very long.
