Awesome. Very new to leather crafting....like 2 days in. I just made my first knife sheath and have about 7 axes that require some. This will be great practice! Super! You're very concise and a great teacher. Thanks!
Great video actually 10x better than the majority of vids on leather sheaths, easy to follow and informative

Pure and simple. No navel gazing, no $500 pricking irons. Very nice and professional.
Thanks for this. I found this very helpful as a new diy leather dabbler.

No complaints from me. Very neat job.
Accidentally found you Jo....great work. Anaco, Vzla.
Very nicely done!!!
If you use a jumbo tip felt marker to trace it will give you the 1/4" you need for your filler. I learned this while making patterns for stained glass.

Looks good Jo 😊 wish you & yours all the best for 2018 🌷
Fantastic and well explained 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I need the tools 🛠 though 🥺🥺🥺 the leather, dyes and glue so would make my axe sheaf mega expensive 👎🏻
His Jo, just watched this after making my first bit of leather work .... an axe sheath. Am I correct in the fact your awl made the holes through the filler leather strips , the pruning irons only marking hole positions which you then push through ? All the best, thanks Mat
@JHLeather
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mat, yes that's right. The stitch marks only mark the leather and the awl makes the holes for the needs to go through.
Hi, thank you for your great instruction. Could you provide a link to where I could purchase the leather knife you use? Thank you!

Hi +Doug Davis I use contact adhesive specifically bostik 6092 for shoemakers as it's really strong. Most contact adhesive should work though. Jo

Hiya glad you like the video. I'm not too sure what you mean by a billhook, can you explain a bit more?
Great starter project for me. . . I have a dozen axes lying around. Where did you get that nice skiving knife and the clamp you use to hold your projects?
@JHLeather

Hiya, I got the clams from Abbey England. You can get some desk top one from a company called dream factory and they look really good.The knife I use was handmade by my friend, i'm not sure if he is making them at the moment but you can get a similar knife from George Barnsley and Sons, it's called a single head knife.
Jo, you probably get asked this quite a lot but what knife is that? The head/pattern knife you used in the video. I really like it. I love your work too. Thank you for sharing your work and knowledge. Happy New Year!

Hi +Lisa Jayne Williams glad you liked the video 😁 I use a few different methods to keep the knife sharp. I will shape it with an oil stone (when I've abused it too much) and then use a strop board with a mix of carborundum powder and tallow on for day to day polishing.... I will do a video 😂

+HonestDoubter haha yes my workshop is rather cold, it's in a Victorian workhouse with single glazing and 0 mains heating so it's a case of layers and getting as close to the gas heater as possible! 😂

Jo, I find your tutorials extremely helpful as I'm about to take the plunge in a bid to make a couple of axe sheaths. However it's a case of in at the deep end, as I have not worked leather before. I have one question though, in the tutorial as you commence your sewing by saying " I'll stitch this double hand stitch as always " does that mean you are using saddle stitch as in your sewing tutorial, or a different type of stitch or am I just being dumb?. Also how similar (if at all) is saddle stitch to lockstitch?.
@JHLeather
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Julian, glad the videos are helping you. I used double hand stitching/saddle stitch for all my hand stitching projects, I guess it's just an odd thing I say.
Easy to follow your project, but what about fix the axe little bit? It is so nice sheath on so rusty axe. And also the wooden handle whould be nice with little bit of care.

Haha yes, the axe got left outside and rusted... Its a cheapy one we don't really use so I've not done anything with it.
