Awesome extra tip.

Man, I used to do those things but I discovered that when you build furniture, which is SO time consuming, I just burn through the sandpaper and not worry about it. It takes SO much time and effort to get a piece of furniture done. But, if I was just doing carpentry or DYI, I agree, that cleaning disk - is really useful. Also, when sanding, use a respirator. Even hand sanding induces a lot of deadly dust that you cannot see with the naked eye and a dust port on your power sander as well as a respirator. I've done furniture making for ages and it's just not worth the risk of lung cancer.

In a pinch, if you have an old tube of dried up silicone… it makes for a great sandpaper cleaner. Just cut off the top and push it out like a push pop.

Three more uses for all those smaller scraps of sandpaper: 1) wrap a piece around a dowel rod (or whatever fits in the blade profile) to sharpen old fashioned moulding plane blades/Stanley-style 45 and 55 plane blades; 2) use those tiny scraps to sharpen your router blades; 3) use the scraps with higher grits to sand away hard-water buildup on plumbing fixtures (test an inconspicuous spot first!!). I’ve become so adept at it that I can scrape down to just before I get to my kitchen sink (which is some type of fancy poly), then I switch to a blue Scotchbrite pad to get the rest of the scrud off. My 28 year old sink looks brand new when I get all done! Ethan - I never thought about using the eraser stick for my files - that’s awesome! I usually use a round brush on my vac hose, but that’s really hard on my round brush 🤪 so my files get pretty grungy because I use them a lot!

I switched to 3M Cubitron paper recently. They cut much faster, cleaner and last much longer. More expensive up front but cost is offset by the longevity.

I agree. I had tried the Diablo mesh and really liked it, but the Cubitron is awesome!

Loved tip #4. Never ceases to amaze me with the number of uses this magical tape has. Excellent video and agree 100% with 120 grit and cleaning stick. I'd be lost without that giant eraser.

On your next sand paper video consider discussing the shelf life of belt sander belts and best storage tips. I just blew through at least 10 sanding belts in 20 minutes as they were all failing at the seams in about 60 seconds. They were Makita Brand... so high quality belts (I assume) but the glue must have deteriorated, as I was running them in the proper direction. I have had them sitting in a drawer in the original packaging for maybe 2 years. Nothing contaminated them and they appeared to be in perfect condition. Needless to say... there was no joy in my shop today. All this said... Thumbs Up on the video and Your Channel. Long time subscriber here... Thanks Brother for sharing your knowledge with us. Ugh, sorry to hear that Kevin! Out of curiosity, were they directional belts? Did they have arrows on them? Sometimes that can be the cause. Otherwise, you’re right, that seems like a weak product no matter the storage!

@@TheHonestCarpenter ... Yes Ethan... they're directional belts. They go clockwise. Arrow on the bottom of the belt points to the left and on the top it points to the right. After the 5th or 6th belt broke... I even reversed to direction to see if it helped. It didn't... That said, I've used belt sanders off and on for years and have never had such trouble with belts. Note the belt itself looks ultra strong/tough and by appearance the seam looks great but in the end... no joy. I was just wondering if you had ever heard of belt glue goin' south after a certain period of time...

I always have a lot of 60 grit and 120 grit on hand. Those are the two I use most often. The 60 grit is great for taking a lot of material off and the 120 is great for the nicer finish.

Yep, that’s a very good point, Jim! You def need something for heavy removal, and sixty is the ultimate lower grit 🙂

Gave small part of cleaning stick to a manicure person, got free manicures for a long time. Great tool.

Yes, cleaning sticks work great, but eventually the grit is worn too far to be effective. I save my used orbital sanding disks and use them with a sandpaper holder made especially for them. They have Velcro to hold the disks in place, and they come in at least a couple different shapes.

Couple of useful tips especially the duct tape one. You’ve just added a few more drops to my bucket of knowledge. Thanks for the video.

Great tips. I was especially excited about the cleaning stick as I will soon be sanding a deck and I find myself stopping to change sandpaper far too often. I went to your links and that is when confusion set in. There are two different links for sanding sticks so I am stuck not knowing which one to get. They are almost exactly the same size so that doesn't really seem like a factor. One is $7.99 and one is $11.99 so it's not exactly going to break the bank either way, but I was struck by the question; why would I want to pay an extra $4.00 for the Dura-Gold stick? What advantages, if any does it offer over the Powertec stick? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Buy youself a pad saver to put between sander and the actual paper to save money on replacing the actual pad of the tool. Specially when you use 3M Cubitron or newer Bosch sand paper as they will destroy the velcro on the pad with time.

Go for Cubitron 3M sand paper. Lasts at least twice as long. Just not the Xtract mesh series.

Hey I thought the duct was my secret …. 🤣🤣 I like Norton and Diablo sandpaper in 100, 120 and 180 grit plus a few other finer grits for fine finish work … all goos tips you shared in this video

Will a sanding disk work on a drum sander?

The cleaning sticks are actually insane. I forgot I owned one because I have not been using my belt grinder recently That should say something ...... I forgot I own the ONE cleaning stick I have .... because I bought ONE ... and its still almost totally intact. Going to dig it out later....

You can change out the Velcro pad on the sander, Hugh! Just search for a new pad for your model on Amazon-they’ll screw right on.
