so THAT'S why my multires models have looked like crap, i always counted on Painter to bake the displacement aswell... It apparently does not.

I know, it's kind of weird right? Surely Adobe will add this feature at some point.

@@JamieDunbar Too bad I bought Substance from Steam so I probably won’t get it unless they add that this year

@@Avsword Yeah I'm in the same boat :( Still, at least Blender does a pretty darn good job of it :D

Why do you bake the displacement map in blender? You wind up bringing the high poly into substance anyway. Can substance not bake a displacement?

Amazingly no, Substance doesn't bake displacement maps yet. Baffles me why it can't, considering it can bake normal maps.

Thanks Vikas. There's nothing I've done here that couldn't be replicated in Blender - it's just that Substance is SSOOO much faster at doing it. There's three main reasons for this. 1. Substance has a simple system for baking out a bunch of maps like Ambient Occlussion, curvation, position data, etc. Blender can bake all of these I'm pretty sure - you'd just have to do them each manually. 2. Substance comes with a stack of textures and brushes. But there's also a lot of free or cheap textures/brushes you could download and import into Blender instead. 3. Smart materials. Really these are just material nodes that use all those baked maps to do clever things like add scratches to the edge of objects, or peel away paint in exposed areas. So with a bit of effort, all of this can be replicated in Blender. It just requires a little bit of extra work. You might also consider checking out the 'Layer Painter' addon for Blender, which tries to mimic a lot of stuff Substance does. And apparently, it's become Open Source recently - which is extremely cool! blendermarket.com/products/layerpainter
