James, I have a story for you. I was a professional mechanic for 10 years. made TONS of "friends" who were customers. I left the field, and now work in a warehouse as a forklift driver for double the pay as I was making. 95% of my co workers know my past. Since I have been out of the field... not a single "friend" has contacted me even once. However, my co workers... when they need auto work, and I give them a price... after the work is completed at my house, they pay me the price I give them, no questions asked, and MOST of them toss me more. For example.... I charged a co worker $100 for brakes, he was quoted 300 in a shop. He paid me the 100, and put a $50 in my pocket and said "I'm paying you for your skill, not trying to get a discount, see you tomorrow pal"..... I completely get what your message is here.

I'm a mechanic as well, and I do Autoglass. I remember one time doing one for my uncle and godfather, gave him a price usually made sure to make around 20 bucks an hour for family quoted him for that I think around 200 bucks. He lives a couple hours away so he did see what safelite would charge first. Anyway, comes down, brings me beer, do the work, he hands me a little over 300 says, well that's what safelite quoted so... Anyway, I do still give friend and family discounts. Except, however, if someone has the audacity to ask for/about it. This system seems to work okay for me as most people in my life that qualify, give extra anyway and will help me out the same. Little bro recently helped hang a door in my house, don't know what a pot would charge but he didn't, I just bought the beer. Couple weeks later, inspected his car and put endlinks on it, charged him nothing, so he bought me a case of beer, and my bosses case of beer (I can sticker cars on weekends using his facility for a that price, er, of course for family and personal friends if I started jacking normal customers I don't think the privilege would last lol)

We have a lady who used to work for the paper and took pictures both for the paper and the local team's photos. My youngest had a significant event, and we invited her. There was a light lunch afterward. As we talked, she indicated how many people "invited her" to take pictures. She indicated that if a picture is printed, she makes $10-$20 for it. I did feel bad that I had just done the same and did offer to composite her, but as she explained, I have gotten several pictures from her for each of my kids every year. And at this particular event, she would have come just because of seeing him for many years and watching him grow. Yes, it is great to share significant events with your friends and let them do what they like to do.

When starting my construction business my uncle who owns an auto shop gave me this advice. Never forget to include that family and friends rate when applicable. Add 15% because friends and family expect so much more time, aggravation and work from you than any other clients.

James, I've been thinking this since i started watching your videos, you're the kind of guy i like to have as friends brother-in-law, boss, coworker, you name it. I had no idea you were bullied and kicked at like that but i guess it makes sense bc sometimes the people who had it rough become the best. I was bullied too and it definitely made me a better person for other people. Becoming skilled at something is easy but being a good entrepreneur, boss, father, role model and all around a good person dosent happen on its own. Hardships. You and everyone watching knows what i mean. Thanks for putting it out there, you cheered me up more times than i can count and its more than that, i dont have the words for it but i can say this: thank you man. Oh and: fuck dereck.

My old boss was constantly getting taken advantage of by "friends" anyone he knew got work done at or below cost, even though 95% of them had more than plenty enough money to have paid full price and the only reason they called him was for cheap work, he was a pushover and let it happen routinely, it drove me nuts 🙄

As someone who used to repair computers, cell phones and tablets for a living. I had family and friends constantly asking me to do stuff for them. Like screen replacement or trouble shooting and repair. All fine and dandy, but they also expected me to buy the parts and not charge them for it "because blood is thicker than water" and any convenient catch phrases concerning familiar bonds. And each time I'd tell them no, not happening. That I did not have the money to do that kind of thing more than once or twice in a year and they'd already had me fix stuff for them multiple times. After that, they threw a tantrum and no joke, actually told my mother on me. She of course took their side even after I explained that the cost to me if I did it. So after that point any family and friends that asked me to do repairs got told up front I'm not a charity, I don't do free work and just who they could blame for me no longer doing free repairs. Yes, I am just that petty. Moral of the story, don't do free work for friends and relatives. And always, I mean always get it in writing and be prepared to say no. Even if it means your greedy friend and family stop talking to you for a while.

I've made friendships with customers, and some friends have become customers. I still distinguish my charitable giving from work. I can appreciate being the smallest kid in class. I skipped a grade early on and remained much smaller than my classmates. I ended up growing taller and bigger than any of the bullies I encountered , but still maintain the same smaller person defense mechanisms I developed as a kid.

Amen, James. Great timing on this one. A friend called last night at 1am for a A/C problem and left a VM, then he decided to call back every few minutes, then every hour for a total of 17 times staying up all night hoping for my normally great after hours service. Well he forgot that last time he threw a hissy fit over the price of charging him normal after hours pricing being that it was again a 12am call. Thanks for being REAL man.

Been a fan of James's short videos for quite a while now, and just subbed to the channel. Good stuff, words of wisdom and a dry sense of humour. I like these channels where honest, intelligent tradesmen let us see their daily lives - somewhat makes me wish I'd chosen a different path. FWIW a couple of British electricians have good channels: Artisan Electrics and David Savery Electrical Services. I have no connection with them, I just like their styles.

It's nice to hear that there are some small glimmers of consequences that occasionally inconvenience horrible people like that. I've been curious for a while why harm, harassment, and battery are considered non-issues when they happen during the most influential years of our lives, but they suddenly become criminal acts once a person reaches the age of majority. "Do all the damage, profit from it, and suffer none of the consequences" is what the life cycle of assholes frequently seems to be in my eyes.
