Full version → • Make double bass small...
There are many ways to make a double bass smaller.
There are instruments that have a smaller body while maintaining the scale and other features of the double bass.
A famous example is YAMAHA's Silent Bass SLB. I like this instrument.
The concept of my bass is different from that of the SLB.
However, I want to produce a similar sound, or even more distinctive sound.
As with guitars, scale affects sound and playability. It's a matter of course.
This instrument, No. 3, is made at 34 inches (864mm), the same as JazzBass and other instruments.
A new challenge in the concept was to be able to play it with a bowed bullet.
Sorry, it is not shown in the video, but all strings can be sounded with the bow.
The pitch between strings at the bridge is about the same as a double bass.
But the neck and nut width is 42mm, which is about the same width as a regular electric bass.
This is why the fingerboard end looks extremely wide.
The neck is extremely thick. It is incomparably thicker than an electric bass.
If you usually play double bass, you should have no problem with it.
If you usually play electric bass, you need to get used to it. Please bear with it.
No truss rod is included.
The strings are double bass strings.
Piezo pickups are susceptible to noise, so I focused on arcing and shielding.
The control box made of striped ebony was fully shielded with copper foil.
The pickups are wired with shielded wires.
Aluminum rods are embedded in the 4-string groove of the bridge to connect the ground to the strings.
Furthermore, a metal plate was embedded in the head to energize all the pegs and connect the ground to all the strings.
The last aluminum plate is used to stop the shoulder-like part that touches the body when the bass is played upright.
It is quite stable.
The body and neck are painted with oil finish.
This is one of my favorite painting methods.
It is my preference, but I try to keep the paint so glossy that it does not look like an oil finish.
I asked drummer and bassist Hinata to play it.
"It gives it a thicker bass sound."
"It has a much more double bass feel."
"It feels good to sit down and play the bass upright."
I received comments such as. Thank you very much.

There were only a few difficult tasks in making the third model.
But there were countless painful tasks.
If I can say that the instrument was finished to my ideal, I would say no.
It was a design and production process that made me realize my immaturity without limit.
I am so frustrated.
However, I think it is the closest instrument to my idea of a good bass sound and my ideal beauty.
Thank you very much.

Gorgeous and beautiful work! If I were to purchase such an instrument, I would ask you to change the distance between the strings on the bridge and make them closer to one another. This is just a personal preference, and I don't know it it would suit you or the bass.

You can't make a stand up bass with a tall setup and call it a double bass "made smaller". A double bass is called that for a reason. That reason is not just because it is played vertically while standing next to it.

100 percent wrong-that is not the reason it is called a double bass (or contrabass, string bass, bass viol, etc.)
