When we did craft shows years ago we would always greet people when they came in the booth and told them to ask if they had any questions. This let them know we had seen them (and weren’t ignoring them) but there wasn’t any pressure. If they hung around a while we would approach them and talk to them about the item they were looking at. I HATE high pressure sales.

The main thing we learned with being vendors is if the area isn't accessible by wheel chairs and strollers, money was lost. We lost a good amount the first year from having a big rug that made it hard for wheel chairs, strollers, even just people with walkers or canes to move around. Once we went to just 2 door mats, we had better luck

So how much money did you make?? This was a great narration of your trip, but would've liked to have heard more about what sells well, what didn't, and ultimately how much do you typically make so a beginner contemplating this life can decide whether it's for them. I did appreciate the behind the scenes view though! 😊

@suzannemartin9323 it's a dumb society rule we're brainwashed into believing to keep us in our caste system. People should ask salary more. If we're giving pieces of our life... which is precious and limited, we should know how much it's worth and if it's worth our time aka our life.

I love how you mentioned that you set your cash out area over to the side so there was no pressure or even eye contact. I have stopped shopping craft shows all together because I can't stand the high pressure. It's like walking into a car lot hoping that the salesman doesn't jump us before we get to look.

Really people selling crafts know why they are there. I have never been attacked by an over zealous craft salesperson. I've had plenty of folks excited about their work or quite frankly, bored. They're just people and I have often taken the discussion from complimenting to taking a few minutes to discuss the interest/inspiration and saying to have a great day. I wouldn't cheat yourself out of the experience over most likely a self-inflicted sort of compassion that we just have for others

The '"These are handmade" is excellent advice! I immediately thought that it would be great to make a layered sign that states just that. In a different format so it stands out from the rest. That way even those you don't personally speak or are just passing by would see it. I'm going to employ that in the future for my markets.

Do you have multiples of each sign? Or do you take 1 of each and that’s it??

Maybe you can make some signs that are a different shape? Although they are all handcrafted and different they simehow look the same from a distance. Maybe even have a mirror as well somewhere? Seeing yourself in the mirror will grab your attention.!

I say Hi. Then I let them browse because I know people don’t like to be stared at while shopping.. But sometimes I’m so proud of my product I over share and the product sells 😊😂

Curious about the cost of this 3day event (booth/fees). Then, all would have an idea of what sale$ is needed.

Yes, I totally agree with Heidi’s husband. As a maker, I ALWAYS greet shoppers and gauge how much to talk based on the vibe. As a consumer, I will walk right out of a store or booth if not spoken to. It goes a long way 🥰 Richmond?! Hey neighbor 😊I’m right down the road in Hampton Roads!

Can someone please clarify this? I have heard from another KZreadr that does shows that you are supposed to greet all your customers. And you are saying the opposite. Which one should I do? Thank you.

Not sure if it has been asked. Where did you find the feet for tour peg boards? Or did you make them? I need something like that for mine.

Yes, I cringed when you first said you sit back, and let the customers come to you. I am a firm believer that you must engage with potential customers.

I know its months later but I am extremely uncomfortable when I feel like Im being approached for a sale. I like to go thru all the booths and see what is there and decide what I want most on my limited funds. if I feel pressured Ill leave early and not return. Not meaning to be mean about it thats how I react whether I want to or not. sorry. I really cant even shop if someone is talking to me on the phone but especially in person.
