Make anything, anywhere with just-add-water biotechnology | Prof. Michael C. Jewett | TEDxChicago

Michael Jewett is a bioengineer who wonders if we can create equitable and distributed biotechnologies for the good. In this thought-provoking and insightful talk, he lays out a vision to re-think how biotechnologies are created and shared, made possible by biology without cells. Can just-add-water biotechnology turn us all into biomakers? Listen and learn how engineered biological systems are opening access to medicines, diagnostics, and more.
Dr. Michael Jewett is the Director of the Center for Synthetic Biology and Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University. Dr. Jewett’s research focuses on advancing synthetic biology research in support of planet health and societal health. This work is creating biotechnologies for decentralized biomanufacturing, portable diagnostics, and educational kits to serve human needs. He co-founded SwiftScale Biologics, Stemloop, Inc., Pearl Bio, Induro Therapeutics, and Design Pharmaceuticals. Jewett is a Fellow of AIMBE, AAAS, and NAI.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Scary, it took years for people to set their clocks on their VCRs and this generation with its even lower education training will set this thing?

The newer generation is not less educated, they perhaps are actually more capable of using technology than the people who grew up with vcrs. They have had a chance to grow and learn with technology, I think the bio technology would be the same, people over time becoming just more capable as they the technology becomes part of their every day lives. Much like 3d printers for some and phones for many have become natural today.

If he was truly insightful, knowledgeable or even partly right, he'd know mankind won't do this anymore than we'll stop buying plastic or wasting everything touched in some way. A LOT of wasted O2 on this ball of mud, and most of those are here on YT trying to be relevant somehow.

God loves you and takes care of you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who made this universe and He is the one who controls everything in it. The biggest loss that a person loses in this life is that he lives while he does not know God and the Islamic religion is the last of the religions and the Prophet Muhammad is the last of the prophets of great intelligence before To believe in something or not to believe in it is to read it, study it and understand it well, and then you have the judgment and choice

DNA is God’s book that He wrote each individual on this planet….and now the genius scientists want to alter that book? Not wise at all!!! Need proof that your DNA is God’s book? Take a look at this scripture: Psalm 139:15-16 My substance was not hid from thee, When I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; And in thy book all my members were written, Which in continuance were fashioned, When as yet there was none of them. DO NOT MESS WITH GOD’S BOOK!!!!! You WILL regret it!!!!!?
