Make a Throwing Knife - Version 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is the second in a three part series showing three totally different ways to complete the same simple throwing knife design. In this video, knife maker Walter Sorrells completes a throwing knife using standard professional knife making tools -- a belt grinder, a mill/drill, a forge and a few other assorted tools.

I really enjoy your videos Walter! you're one of the few KZread'ers I always watch as soon as I see a new upload from you. I was wandering about this concept of these videos. why are didn't you make a forging video along with these. since you started forging sword I would asume that it was a go to method of knife making for you? could be interesting seeing a series of forged vs stock removal knife making videos.

Hey Walter, how would you temper a throwing knife out of 55Si7? Do i have to worry about tempering brittleness if i go past 300°C? (since it contains more than 0,3% Mo)

I have a 6 1/2 foot straightedge made of spring steel. It's only 1/8 inch thick. I was thinking of making throwing knives out of it. Is it too thin for this purpose?

pretty sure i accidentally did a differential heat treat on a knife recently. i forgot to preheat my oil, and after i finish ground the blade there was a slight line running down the blade about half an inch up following the edge. i didnt even know that was possible, so the more you know :)

Question: I am currently in the process of making a dagger of sorts but I'm struggling to work out how to fix a rounded wooden handle. I don't want to use glue (it seems like a tacky method) and I don't have anything to thread the tang either. The tang is about 0.5 by 0.5cm and its square. Do you think I can I could simply drill a hole in the handle and hammer it onto the square tang securely without it splitting with pressure? Also, could I somehow heat the tang, would this cause the metal to contract then swell or something to create a tighter hold? Finally I wont be using a pummel of any sort on this dagger, just so you know (all just one handle).

A throwing knife should be longer to work good, 11-14 inches. The rules for competition tell the length, i think its what i just said . Copy the Cold Steel brand, they fly good.

Cool design but there are things you might consider doing differently for a few reasons. A throwing knife always has questions attached to its design. All of them ask, "Is your throwing knife a weapon, a circus performing instrument, or a toy?" 1. If it's a weapon, you're probably not getting it back after use (and you might not want it back) and everything you do to make it do more than stick exactly once is wasted effort. If it's a circus performing instrument or a toy, then, yes, by all means, it should be made to last. 2. A throwing knife really doesn't need an elaborately ground blade/edge because the metal you remove it to make a sharp blade, makes it more likely to cut you as it leaves your head (depending on throwing method) and because the more metal you remove from the blade, the more mass you remove and a throwing knife's penetration is straightforward Newtonian physics: KE = 0.5 × m × v^2. The more mass you remove, the more you lessen your penetration/damage potential. The point is the point of a throwing knife and It is for this reason that many makers of throwing knives use a long, shallow bevel with a heavy, hard-to-break point on it. Just some thoughts. Thanks for the videos. I'm finding them entertaining and instructive.
