Jenny, I am a huge sewing fan, but since I stopped sewing because of poliarthritis, I have only been able to watch others do it. As far as quilting goes I watch you endlessly and love your easy friendly way of explaining things. Thank you for the wonderful company!

I look forward to your tutorials and absolutely love your videos. You make us better quilters every time you produce a new video. Don't know what the thousands of us quilters would do without your guidance. Grandmother's fan will be on my list as I am a 'Dresden fan'. Thank you!

So pretty.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I wanted to share a picture because I did use modern fabrics, but in the colors of a crazy quilt that my grandmother started with her mother in the thirties! I am making two pillows to match or rather compliment it!
I just love this fabric! I am partial to vintage-looking fabrics.
I am making the same quilt but I have the fan with point. I wish now I have watched this video before and it would have come together much faster. I just about got all the blocks sewn together but your way is much better. I could already be finished with it. I hope you and your family have a wonderful week.
I love you videos, even though I don't have a sewing machine to make them yet.... I just love how happy and enthusiastic you are, cheers me up no matter what!
Great video Thanks
Jenny, just as I get new fabrics and wonder what to do with it, you come out with a pattern I love!!!
I love this tutorial. I made a pillow when I was in school years ago but as years passed lost the pattern. This tutorial makes it so much easier. When time is permitting I would love to make a full quilt with this pattern. Thank you Jenny another great tutorial.

Hai Jenny...I didnt expect this quilt would be so easy...thank you...from Malaysia.
Beautiful quilt and beautiful fabric.
Although I didn't care for the assembly of the fans, I did like the dimensions given, the border measurements and the use of border fabrics for the center circles. I always watch an entire tutorial for everything I can gain from them. Thanks for posting.
Jenny, I Love your video and the color's are so pretty..Cant wait to see your next quilt..I wish I had your talent.I'm a new quilter and watching your video's is so helpful so Thank You Jenny.

This is a great opportunity to use the fancy stitches on your sewing machine.
Hi Jenny Just into quilting, with my Janome 15000. Your vids have opened a new world for my creativity. I have embroidered dogs on a cushion and needed a frame for them. Thought of the dresden, just the top part maybe 2.5 inches in different colours, to set it off. Thanks so much for your gorgeous ideas.
Great tutorial!! Thanks Jenny 🌷
lovely. its so pretty and again you make it seem so easy & fun.
Nice! Thank you for a great idea!!! I'll be working on this one soon. I really appreciate all you do (all of you) to give us great patterns & for showing us the best way to make them!

Just finished my top using the Hop, Skip and a Jump fabric line I got from MSQC. This is the perfect pattern. Love it and I used my variegated thread I got from MSQC and a blanket stitch to secure my fans. Turned out really cute.
Thank you so much for you wonderful teaching techniques and sunshiny personality. I love this and am going to try this with "quilt on the go" technique. Wish me luck 🙏

Congratulations on your finished top! I bet it looks marvelous. We would love it of you would share a picture to our Facebook page or on Instagram using #MSQCshowandtell . As for the Tennessee Waltz Quilt, I think that is a wonderful suggestion and will have to ask Jenny to do some thinking and planning to see how we could do that with precuts. Thank you so much for the great feedback, I see what I can do about a tutorial for that specific quilt! :)
I love it

you make it look easier than I imagined!
I have been making 3 dresden flower pot pattern quilts for my granddaughters graduating in June. I found the pattern on your site. I used the vintage prints also. Love it, but this looks more easy and love the old pattern prints that i can use in this next quilt.

Awesome!
Me encanta....
I liked it so much that I made it the same day. I'm looking forward to see how it quilts up on my Long arm.
This is so awesome!!! Thank you Jenny!!! I have made Dresden plates...even the checkered one and love it. I will for sure start this one this weekend!!!!
I think I would like to do one of these in different solids. I noticed you have Kona Cotton - Powder Room Charm Pack as a Daily Special. That could be the pink tones in one line of fans. Then you could use blue, green, yellow, orange, and purple for the remaining lines of fans. I love bright colors in quilts. Thanks for the tutorial!

υπεροχο!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This reminds me of quilting saw in an old magazine. It was called “snake in the hollow”
I'd like to make one or see one made with fall colors.
I have some charm squares called "Imperial Collection" by Robert Kaufman that I'm going to use. Jenny, you could also use metallic thread for your blanket stitch which would give yet another dimension to the design, plus depending on the fabric you could also use a variegated thread too.

I love this quilt! The colors are so pretty, and the pattern is one my grandmother made. So, I have used raw edge appliqué on art quilts, but I wonder how this holds up to use and washing as a curl-up-with-a-book type of quilt?
@MissouriQuiltCo
7 жыл бұрын
I think it will do just fine I just don't recommend drying in the dryer. I would hang dry only! :)
How cute would it be to add a small lace border on the rounded edge of those fans?? I think it would really add something to it!
Great tutorial. I was just thinking, if you put the template on the open corners of the folded circle instead of the folded corner, wouldn’t that save you having to cut it into quarters after?
Hi Jenny!! You are awesome! Just wondering what you recommend for batting? Love your tutorials, I watch everyday.

That is a quilt idea I will pass on to Jenny and her sewists and see what they come up with!
Thanks for another great tutorial! I have a question about the appliqué portion of the block. I have made a few quilts using raw edge appliqué and have tried different techniques, but always seem to have an issue with the edges of the material fraying after washing, even when using fusible web. In the video, I noticed you did raw edge appliqué and didn’t use fusible web. I’m wondering how I can keep my raw edge appliqué quilts from fraying, after being washed, where the appliqué is stitched down.
@MissouriQuiltCo
7 жыл бұрын
When stitching a raw edge you will always have a bit that unravels. If that bothers you, you can always fold the edges under just a smidge and stitch it down that way! I hope this helps!
gorgeous! i was wondering if there is a way I could make the Dresden ruler? we do not have a quilting store anywhere near us!
My comments were on the Fan quilt you made. I forgot to add that. duh😁
jenny, when you blanket stitch or sew the top stitch, is that going to be sufficient enough so the edges don't fray?
MY MOTHER HAD A FAN QUILT TOP FROM 1940'S BUT SHE NEVER FINISHED IT. MATERIAL CAME APART AS IT WAS HAND SEWN.
👏👏👏👏👍💐
Hi Jenny, I know this is an old tutorial video, but I stumbled across this today, and I ask you can I make these Grandmother's Fan quilt blocks add batting as I quilt along? 🥰
Все классно..но края бы я подвернула. ...чище бы получилось!! А вообще очень нравятся уроки Джейн! !!
Could I use the 10" squares and make a bigger fan block? What size background square would I have to use and how much border fabric?
Where do you get those pretty color rulers I love them..
i realized this can be done in the hoop. i just made it.

Hello MSQC! First of all thank you for the tutorial. I love watching all of them! I like this pattern and the cascading design but have a concern and was hoping you could give me some more information. I am not familiar with a blanket stitch and maybe if I was this question wouldn't be valid but I was wondering if having the raw edge of the fan being exposed will create an issue with fraying and thus shortening the life of this quilt. Call me crazy but if I spend this much time on a hand made quilt, I want it to last for a hundred years! And I want it to be something that my family can use -- either on their bed or to cuddle up with on the couch.
@MissouriQuiltCo

That's a great question, Stacey! Without go along the edge of it with a blanket stitch or a zig sag the fan would begin to fray, which we do not want to happen. Most machines will have these stitch options on them. I hope this helps!
@staceyreames3123
7 жыл бұрын
It does. I do have both those stitches on my machine. So just the zig zag will prevent fraying and you don't have to turn it under or anything? I did not know that. I thought the only way to prevent fraying was to turn it under so no raw edge was exposed. Thanks!
@kathygarner419

I too share your concern about raw edged on a quilt. I use a small piece of rickrack or narrow lace to the top of the corner pie piece and the top edge of the fan blades. You place a piece of medium or narrow rick rack as close as you can on the edge, stitching it down. Next you turn the rick rack to the back of the fan and wedge edges so just the peaks of one side are peaking above the raw edge then stitch to the background. This will allow your quilt top to last for generations. If you don't like either of these options you can stitch the fan sections and the wedge to fusible interfacing as close as possible to the edges, clip a small hole in the interfacing turn right side out and press down with an iron to the background square. As for your question about blanket stitch it is a decorative stitch found along the edges of many commercially produced fleece blankets. it does not prevent fraying. It was very popular for use on the edges of sunbonnet sue/overall bill quilts. It consists of one long stitch followed by one medium vertical stitched chained together with a running stitch. Most sewing machines have it as one of the selections of decorative stitches even some very inexpensive machine. Hope this helps.

There is no way, in good conscience I would teach anyone to use this method of simply gluing and sewing down the edges of a raw curved design.. Curved seams are for intermediate seamstresses who can handle the old-fashioned methods available of turning under a seam. Your method is a nice blend of old-fashioned skilled work and also uses materials which are currently available for expediting quilting.
Wouldn't the edges on the fans eventually fray?
Hi Jenny: I look forward to make some of the wonderful quilts you speak about. I'm still new to this so, maybe you can answer something for me. Is it necessary to Wash and Iron all fabric, no matter the size, before making your making your quilt? Thank, You for your time. Sharon Matthews Ontario, CA
