3/15/24 UPDATE: Let’s make a few things clear, Nex Benedict did not die from suicide. 1. Pushing someone to end their life is still manslaughter at best and murder at worst. Nex was bullied all school year and pushed to it. 2. You cannot die from diphenhydramine, an antihistamine unless you drink gallons of it. So, this medical report that was released today needs to be investigated by the DOJ and the family likely needs to do a private autopsy to find the true cause of death. Sadly, far-right terrorist groups are already celebrating Nex’ death because they would rather us dead than be alive and LGBTQ.

Same! This could have been me. There were many times when I was jumped and beaten bloody, kicked in the head by groups of kids. The only people who ever stood up for me were a few other brave students. The school staff/administration would literally see a pack of kids waiting outside for me and not do anything, not call anyone. Simply shoo me out the door and hope that it all works out.

With bigots, the question is always "for whom?" Safer _for whom?_ More freedom _for whom?_ Justice _for whom?_ Better economy _for whom?_ So they aren't exactly lying, their framing is implicit that it's for the groups who they think matter, and punishing those who they think don't. I don't get why more people aren't in uproar over politicians actually saying that they refuse to represent their constituents! This hearkens back to the foundations of liberty. Liberty is all or nothing. If any person or group can have their liberties compromised, anybody's liberties can be compromised. To undermine the safety of "others," you undermine your own safety. This is why fascists only ever create instability and violence wherever they manifest. Othering, exclusivity, supremacy; the mechanisms of fragmentation and destruction of culture and society, --- Religion brings with it rigid and a-contextual structures. By its very nature, religion cannot operate in a secular society without giving up all of its power and influence. And you tell me which religions are going to give up all their power to include themselves with many "others" they deem lower than them on the pyramid... Religion propagates hate, bigotry, and right-wing hierarchical world views. It is inherent to the power dynamics of the various religious organizations that they do this to protect their institutional power. Religion is the ultimate mechanism of control; the eradication of freedom and choice. Misinformation is authoritarianism. Misinformation deny's a person comprehension of their world, and causes their own intuitions to betray them. Controlling the possible choices they might make.

Owasso has only ever cared about its appearance less the lives of their kids. They have posters all over that school for anti bullying, yet they do nothing to stop it only keep it as quite as possible. The shit that has gone down in that school if horrifying and any previous Owasso student would tell you the same. Harassed, beaten, just put through absolute hell. If he didn't end his life, I'm sure someone else would have killed him. Its been over ten years and as someone who is also lgbt+ my heart hurts and I still don't feel safe/comfortable in my own home town, especially not near the campus where Seth and I attended We have to remain strong and fight for a future where generations beyond us won't have to worry about cruel, vicious people who won't accept people for loving whoever they love or identifying however they personally choose to identify

I am a trans kid (ftm) that lives in Oklahoma. I will be going to high school soon. My current school is small so I have a close circle of supportive friends who are either allies or also LGTBQ. However, I'm absolutely terrified after hearing the many stories of people who were beaten in high school for just being themselves. I'm gonna have to go to a large high school, which will be a big step for me as someone from a smaller school. The large school idea scares me as I'll have to make new friends and don't know who I can trust. The story of Nex really hit close to home since I've experienced transphobia before (from parents, grandparents, classmates, etc.) and I hope I can avoid this happening to me.

Someone from our community had their life taken away from them and this is what happens. Thank you Dr Pride for relaying this information to us. It hurts like hell that our sibling was murdered, and what's worse, we can't even grieve them together knowing the full story. To all my trans and nonbinary siblings out there, and my Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer brethren on Turtle Island, I love you. You are not alone ❤ I went out to the water and sang a song for Nex last night. A neighbour's cat followed me as I hummed it on the way. I'd like to think that this cat was sending love to Nex as well, knowing how much they loved cats.

thank you so much for this video, this is something i didn't even know happened. this would be a textbook cautionary tale of the outcome of transphobic bathroom bills leading to violence in the way conservatives clearly don't want to believe it will, but there's a lot of willful ignoring of facts from the same people shouting "facts don't care about your feelings" while wanting american history to be taught without the events of slavery, segregation, and anything at all related to systemic racism literally because "it'll make kids feel bad for being white!". nex was failed so severely by the people claiming they care about children's safety. the cause of death being "natural causes" makes literally no sense whatsoever. unless they can prove that nex had preexisting conditions that could lead to them dying in such a way, they shouldn't even bother with that nonsense. even if they could, nex died the day after being violently attacked and sustaining a head injury in said attack, someone is *absolutely* responsible for their death, without a shadow of a doubt. the only craziness of this that i can understand and cosign is ordering a toxicology report, purely for the sake of the possibility that nex could've tried to harm themselves after experiencing something so traumatic, and that potentially contributing to their passing, but it looks like that isn't the case. i can't believe this. i'm absolutely shattered after hearing this case.

There is hate crime legislation in the US. Other such crimes have been appropriately prosecuted, but hate crimes against transgender or indigenous people often go un-reported or underreported and may not be appropriately prosecuted. This is very far from the first murder of a Two Spirit person which has been ignored by a state. There was an infamous case in the 90s in New Mexico, involving a Diné child murdered in the desert by a gang of boys. This is just the first one which happened because of bathroom bills and other transphobic legislation (as opposed to just cultural transphobia). The laws exist to punish these people, but there seems to be a lack of interest in doing justice.

As I was signing my kids out of school, the vice principal who refused to deal with the bullying over two whole years, actually tried to tell us they have a “zero tolerance” stance on bullying. No. I have zero tolerance on bullying, which is why I’ve had to pull all three of my LGBTQ+ kids out of public schools.

While other pointed out, that apparently Nex had They/He set as pronouns in their profile, however PoweredByRaindbows apologized for the slip up in another comment thread, but also stated that Nex apparently also used she/her on their social media with a preference for they/them. It could be that Vex used all pronouns, or that those information could be from different times in their life or different people only knew of certain pronoun usage but weren't kept up to date, or were even allowed to use pronouns that others weren't. (Reminds me of a non-binary kid who was with their dad at a local group meeting for the parents of LGBTQ+ kids and there he found out, that his kid hasn't told him everything so far about their identity, the pronouns and what words to use or not.) There is Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Psychological Trauma each one affecting a person differently involved in the action taken against her. I feel sad for the teens coming up now. Yes there was anti-gay sentiments when i went to high school in the late 60's early 70's, but most of the "unique" communities masked their true identities back then. I was a victim of S.A., physical, emotional and psychological abuse that came from being female AND autistic.. I learned how to mask YOUNG so i did not get the attention of bullies (staff or student). I hate to ask children to live behind a mask like i had to but that may be the only way they can stay safe.

being splashed with water isn't a valid excuse to start beating the water thrower within an inch of their life. in most cases, doing that as an adult would easily have both parties arrested, but im seeing way more hate being thrown at Nex than the ones who escalated it into a fight. i have a hunch that Nex lashed out like that because of prior bullying (from my own experience, it completely changes the way you interpret what others do/say). obviously throwing water at someone for making a comment about the way you laugh is extreme, but those girls should have simply said "what's wrong with you" and told the principal or whatever. the "f around and find out" narrative doesn't apply here, these are hormonal teenagers that haven't had the opportunity to explore the "real world" yet. if people continue to praise the girls as "heroes", school violence could get way worse. it's already bad enough where i live--and i can imagine that fights will become more of a first resort rather than a last resort if you all keep saying that this is okay. im worried for _anyone_ still in school, because this is the perfect fuel for a bully's fire. i'm not going to respond to any comments, so feel however you choose to feel about my perspective. stay safe and take care of yourselves, all of you.

  • @SirMaddaMMetzo
    @SirMaddaMMetzo5 ай бұрын

I know you probably go through a lot, following and reporting on this case and we are all very emotional about it. But I personally would be more careful to throw around words like psychopath. It's a spectrum and people can have psychopathy traits without "scoring high enough" to count as fully fledged psychopath, but still could get stigmatized if psychopathy gets always linked with criminals who hurt or kill people. And research indicates that even when they can't feel empathy, they still can learn to think from another person's perspective. Those girls could have psychopathic traits or they could just be hateful, violent bigots who saw Nex as less than human and therefore not deserving any empathy. But we agree that almost all of the people involved in this case NEED to be investigated! We need to know if someone had a transphobic motive to mistreat them or if someone is overall not capable of doing their job correctly or if there are any other circumstances that would diminish their guilt or level of involvement, because they themselves might have been misinformed or deceived. And more importantly: Even IF another autopsy was made and would come to the unlikely conclusion that the head injuries Nex suffered from the beating did not contribute to their death, then these girls still should face investigation and a trial for the assault and bodily harm itself! Especially when Nex trans identity (and/or their indigenous identity) probably played a major role in why the girls used that level of violence. I don't know enough about the criminal justice system in Oklahoma, but even if pouring water on someone counts as an attack and that Nex had "started" a fight, then what the girls did, surpassed self-defense by a lot! The moment an aggressor goes down and even black out, you stop assaulting them! You can't say it was self defense when you continued to kick their head, while they lied on the ground. So even if there is no chance to put them on trial for murder or manslaughter or something similar, then at least for their level of violence and bodily harm. Like that is the bare f*cking minimum I expect to happen to them.

I 100% support the uplifting of Nex Benedict and their name, and we should fight that this does not happen ever again. This issue is no longer just an American problem, and is spreading, there has even been talking within our own coalition government here in New Zealand about introducing discrimination around bathrooms and trans sports people which horrifies and disgusts me. We must stand against phonbia's against the LGBTQIA+ community, and particularly transphoboa. That being said, Michelle Obama said it right, "when they go low, we go high", and so even putting out into the world the idea that LGBTQIA+ people will take up arms, will resort to the violence that is perpetrated against us does a disservice to our movement. Stonewall was a powerful movement, and around the world, LGBTQIA+ people have carried forward a spirit of protest which has become a necessary part of our identity ... but let's not give the movements that will twist anything against us this ammunition [excuse the pun], to claim that the gays are threatening to kill them, will take up guns and assault weapons against them. That is what those "people" [I term I use loosely] have done to us, we are better, we are smarter, we stand in what is right and what is just, and we will win ... the way we have for decades ... by forcing legal and political change ... not by stooping to the tactics of the phobes who want nothing more than an excuse to kill us. America's gun laws are not in our favour, we need to work with what we are good at, and show the other side they while they are the lowest of the low, we will ALWAYS be better because we don't let hate win.

ah yes, the civility politics trap. It has been shown time and again that they will do anything to prevent us from having a seat at the table. should we resort to violence? no. Can we use “proper channels”? alas, also no. That’s going to be the major problem. look at how they treat LGBTQ+ people who get elected, they will push you out for just stating that there’s blood on people’s hands. what will likely happen, unfortunately, is there will be peaceful protests that will be treated like the BLM protests, treated as violent riots. And they will likely become what they claim. I don’t know how to deal with the situation, but what can be done in the face of genocidal freaks?

50 bills proposed?! That's almost one bill PER DAY since the start of the year (more than one per day if you don't include weekends and holidays)! This is not ok!

there were around 600 bills proposed last year too, so the number was closer to 2 a day.

If you're a parent or guardian of a trans teen or child, going to school in a red state. Pull them out, move. Protect your children because these are incredibly dangerous environments for them.

If Nex was lucky enough to be prescribed any pain medication (I wouldn't count on the transphobic medical staff to have done that much, but it's possible), then that will show up in the toxicology report. The next step for the transphobic law enforcement will then be to point to "dangerous opioids" in their system, even if it was just a normal dose of oxycodone that people take all the time. That's why they're waiting for the toxicology report.

Pain meds are tough to get,I'm in constant pain. I'm lucky enough to have a Dr who knows and understands me ,I don't think meds are given out regarding sexuality

Texas doesn't give strong enough and much pain medication to overdose on, even if you really need strong pain medication 😂

Your channel was super helpful when I was going through accepting myself. Keep up the good work, this case is truly terrible. It's unfortunate that multiple decisions were made negligently. I feel like if everyone wanted to help Nex, they would've been alive or at least we would've known about their death beforehand. RIP

I’m sorry, I was an RN for 5” years in small rural and large city ER’s. I ‘ve never seen a person’s sexual orientation held against them in care delivery Catholicor public hospitals. No testing or care withheld..😢
