Major Matt Mason - part of MOTUC? Secrets behind the proposed Major Matt Mason Classics line

Scott ToyGuru Neitlich talks about the pitch to do a Major Matt Mason collector line based on the hit 1968 line from Mattel. And how it was related to the Masters of the Universe Classics line

I was born in 1962 and my brother and I had these toys. The spaceship, space station, bubble vehicle, Calypso, anyway... I have very fond memories of playing with these toys in the time of the Apollo missions. What a great time to grow up! Thanks for the video!

Wow. I went to SDCC 2012 and saw that Major Matt Display. I thought it was amazing. I was twelve then and was really into retro revival lines. Four Horsemen's Outer Space Men was one of the first "collector" lines I started buying at cons with my birthday money. My teenage self would have bought every one of those Matt Mason figures.

I think the pandemic messed up the completion of Major Matt Mason. In the late 60s I had GI Joe with the whole Vietnam Soldier outfit and M16. I wanted Major Matt mason figures so bad because of those commercials in 1969. A few years later some one was selling a whole box of the Major Matt Mason figures, Moonwalker and a few other things at the Swap Meet. I scored because I was the proud owner of a Box of Major Matt Mason toys.

The He-Man figure at 13 minutes looks like Iggy Pop! As for a Major Matt Mason movie, that would have been fun, as well as restarting the toy line. I was a little young for MMM, but My older brother's friends had everything and I got to watch them play and have fun with them. It would have been interesting to see if the line would regain popularity, as it was action figures were huge in the 80's and 90's, shame design wouldn't get on board.

  • @GrayskullWarrior

Also, if management is "on board" how do design have the power to say no? Don't all teams eventually report to the same management team?

This is kind of fascinating. I'll have to look up the year, but I was contracted by Mattel at one point to write a history of the Matt Mason toy, complete with NASA crossovers. It was tied-in with the Tom Hanks film proposal that didn't take off, so it was shelved.

It is truly a joy to be going back and watching all these videos. This video is especially important to me because you bring up Dino Riders. I remember I THINK it was the comic con the year after you left... and Matty was doing a slide show and ONE slide...ha... had a mention to all the old properties that they had that they could revisit.. and Dino Riders was one. It left such an impression on me that I still remember it. I see in the comments that you already know about the Entertainment Earth lauch... im not sure if you know or can speak to it, but was there any further talk about the brand? Do you think that Entertainment Earth set is a way to test demand for any further projects? Thank you... these videos are truly and honestly the best. Get some merch... haha. I'll get it.

I'm sorry to hear for your sake that the effort you put in researching and trying to come up with new ideas didn't pan out but I would have had no interest in any of these lines you were considering for Classics so I can't say I'm disappointed. BraveStarr, Blackstar, Thundarr, Silverhawks, Tigersharks, D&D or a Frank Frazetta character line would all have been great fits with Classics and even expanding the line with things like Centurions, Inhumanoids or C.O.P.S. would have been cool too! I realize licensing and royalties would play a part but in the same way Super 7 is making it work, Matty could have too.

DnD might be a license hard to get seeing as hasbro owns them. But nothing stops Mattel from doing wizards / warriors / thief’s and clerics. I think it ends up just looking like motu though. Motu borrows a lot from pulp like DND and Star Wars did. Motu is more a mash up like DnD. Just roll up a Barbarian and you’ve got He-man. I think leaning into the He-man from the jungle origin and tying in a land of the lost feel would allow Dino riders to slot in. Or just connect them to preternia somehow.

I might be part of your problem on this one. I collect vintage/antique space toys and have grown a bit familiar with Matt Mason despite not growing up with the line. While it has intrigued me at times (mostly when coupled with the unofficial sister line of Outer Space Men Colorforms put out), I've never gotten involved because I've never really been fond of bendy figures in general. Your plans for Marlena make me regret my disinterest.

I have to agree with you, Alan. Matt Mason was my all-time favourite. IMHO it would have been great if Mattel had re-launched the same line, with additional astronauts (at least 2 FEMALES, for Heaven's sake!), and suit re-designs for other space-faring nations, say, Russian and Chinese; plus new vehicles, habitats, equipment - and landers, like the Madelman Mars Lander...
