I agree that patience is definitely part of collecting. However, for those that don't collect toys, I don't think they will ever see us as "mature". I mean I am 46, and will be celebrating my 20th wedding anniversary to my beautiful wife this month. I have 2 great teenage kids. I've always been employed, have a nice place to live, have a very strong spiritual life with friends and community: Oh and I happen to collect toys.

It's so amazing realizing that one is not alone. I have a similar life but I'm 45 , with 3 kids in a 9 year marriage. But I can say; toy collecting is a highly fulfilling lifestyle that hasn't been fully embraced by mainstream as it has its own degree of sophistication as butterfly, coin and stamp collecting was decades ago.

Same. I’m pushing 50 and i’m married (15 years) and my wife and i have a 13 year old daughter. My wife and i paid our mortgage off this year and i officially retired, we’re financially “comfortable” and we live in a very close knit community in a very quiet street full of loving families who borrow milk and sugar when they run out and there’s never any trouble. I have various hobbies (gardening, reading, music) and i also collect toys (vintage & modern)….33 years so far. A lot of folks i know know that i collect what i do but they still think it’s kind of odd but i’m good with that. I’d rather be “odd” than beige. The funny thing is though is that i’ve been told i “Don’t look like a toy collector” by some folks (whatever that actually means!)…i’m a solidly built bloke, long beard, shaved head, both my arms and legs are fully tattooed as is my chest. A lot of folks are shocked then they find out that I’ve never been in trouble with the law (my wife’s a Super Intendant with Police so there’s that) and a lot of folks when they first meet me think i’ve been in prison and/or i’m a biker….both are laughable and completely wrong 😂😂😂. I don’t drink and haven’t touched drugs, ever. A collector friend of mine calls me “The scary looking guy who collects toys” 😂😂😂…..it’s a weird juxtaposition i tell ya.

I am a vicarious collector. I go on Instagram and KZread and enjoy watching people showing off their collection. I started collecting years ago and quit within 1 year because I learned that the idea of owning a collection is much more appealing than actually/literally owning a collection of [insert franchise toys]. I gave away my collection to the toy drive and I am happy with that.

Good job ! I just turned 70 this year, and I was finally able to purchase a James Bond Attache Case (and a reproduction box to put it in ). It's nearly complete, but without spending thousands of dollars I was able to get a decent one. I'll just stand over in the corner being happy now. Because that's what collecting is ! You are your own fan club. Unless you have friends who also share in your passion. I have one. In spite of the many collectors out there, it's a very private hobby.

For me, action figures are like actors in a movie I'm directing. I love putting beloved characters into interesting scenarios, building displays however I want. Right now, I have a big bar scene with a bunch of NECA and other "live action" characters sitting down, having food and drinks, watching KISS on stage. Frankenstein's Monster is the bartender.

I'm a dude old enough to remember Masters of the Universe when it was brand new and I agree with everything Scott says. I went through a period in my twenties when I acted like the toy companies owed it to me to make the character I wanted just the way I wanted at a price I thought was fair. I've matured a lot since then, I've gotten back into collecting this last year out of the same desire to own something that is a three dimensional representation of a character to which I have an attachment. If I like the figure great, if not, no big deal. I do display them but each one by itself as kind of it's own thing, when I have more I'll make some little dioramas. My advice; take it or leave it, if you feel frustrated because of an action figure you don't own, you're losing focus on what's important in life, these are luxury goods not necessities, a lot of pissed off geeks need to chill out.

Honestly the worst part of toy collecting is the judgement I get from family. They don't even understand values of the toys and when I was growing up they would just grab some and take them to goodwill or something like that. They would also "help" me sell toys to make money but would sell a 40 dollar toybiz for 3 bucks because "The kid liked it and I didnt think it was worth that much." I only asked them that once to help and lost half of my Toybiz collection to a single family for 20 bucks while I was in the rest room. :(

Dont collect toys much anymore because during the oil crisis, the price of plastic went way up and so did the price of action figures, and it never went down. I focus mainly on comics today, which can be equally as frustrating. It took me a decade to locate a Dennis the Menace #4 (1954) because it just never came up on eBay. Right now, I’m need the final issue of a 50s era DC funny animal title, and that’s one that may never turn up, or could be much more than I want to pay.

Many of our goals as toy collectors can only come from that long term and having hope. You could only get a figure of every x-wing pilot by, not just being a life long collector, but by having the patience that someone will have produced Star Wars toys long enough that they would get around to them all. Only a lifetime spent collecting lets you set what could be achievable life time collecting goals. Where are my Willow action figures? Where are my Dungeons and Dragons cartoon figures? One day they could end up being a thing.

It does take patience indeed. I'm a pretty patient person but also a determined one. Through this, I've managed to get or do most of the things I want, within reason, with time and patience. And yeah, it was a very private hobby for a long time. Also, even if you have personal friends who collect, they might collect something totally different, or give up collecting altogether. So yeah, the internet really made a big difference, as far as sharing and discussing the hobby. I have a lot of hobbies as well, besides collecting toys, with most of my collection being Star Wars, Transformers, and LEGO. I also have M.A.S.K. and Jurassic Park and other stuff. I'm an artist, I keep tropical fish, I have model trains and model kits, nature and the outdoors, riding my bike, I play videogames. I enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, certain TV shows and movies etc. Good times.

I don't need justification for collecting from anyone, and I don't care what anyone thinks and never have. But, the way I "sell" it to the uninitiated is that it's an investment. I buy things to keep, but the value of an extensive toy collection, over time, cannot be discounted, even by the person whose initial reaction is to dismiss it or make fun of it.

  • @papatubez3062

It's not an investment if you never see a profit from it. It's just buying stuff. What will happen to your "investment" is this: someone will throw all your toys in the trash when you die because it's too much of a hassle to look up the price of your MIB WHITE WITCH FOIL VARIANT CARD nonsense. Likely they will just sell the whole lot of it to another collector for chicken feed just so they don't have to think about it. Some investment.

Thank you again, Scott. I think toy collecting is different, for the most part, from stamp and coin collecting. For numismatists and philatelists (coin and stamp collectors, respectively), most collections are closed sets. The U.S. government won't (and legally can't) retroactively make a coin or stamp and pre-date it. So coins and stamps that didn't exist will never exist, though the government has issued commemorative versions of those coins and stamps, which you can choose to be part of the collection, even though they are only officially considered commemorative pieces. As for toys, I've always found it difficult to find where to draw the line. For example, Spider-Man has a connection to the MCU...and the rabbit-hole dives in from there. I would love a complete Spider-Man: The Animated Series from 1994 with all the heroes and villians. Like you, Scott, I still want to see Spot.

I think as it related to myself its just another section of Collecting. I mostly focus on Blu Rays these days over other things. I already got thousands of comics have started to get Manga mostly Deluxe Editions only Ghost Girl for smaller volumes maybe eventually Goblin Slayer. Berserk or Attack on Titan for Colossal sized. I find it more interesting tooling how it goes from concept to market all the details. Even Wrestling I only really have interest in Shoot Interviews or inside stuff like Tough Enough even NXT 2.0. Almost everybody or thing wants a toy of their character. Recently I finally got The Sword And The Sorcerer along with The Beastmaster on Blu Ray and 4K. Even if picture/sound quality lacks its a relief and elation :).

Yes, patience is the key. You never know if the company will release certain character, will they complete the team or not. I do collect Transformers and I grew up with Beast Wars so I am very fond about animal robots. They had toyline back in the 90s and that's it. Pretty much nothing new apart from rereleases with better colors or new version of few random characters. The latter ones didn't get my interest because they were not enugh to complete the team. I always wanted brand new line dedicated to Beast Wars that would have whole bunch of characters with great looking animal modes. And just last year, for 25th anniversary Hasbro just made exactly what I wanted.

I begin my toy collecting when I'm at college... I invited my college mates to my house for college group project, they saw my collections and laughed at me and saying I'm still a wuss/kid playing toys, then they spread the gossips at college... All laughed at me, saying I should go back to elementary school or hug a teddy bear while sleeping... Felt humiliated... I told the toy seller at the hobbies shop, he told me just ignore those jerks, they never understand the joy of being the collectors, he told me that he sold a Godzilla figure to a 'mom', he asked is it for her kids? She said no, is for her to display at her office table, so that whenever she's stressed at work, she can look/admire at the figures she love, she can feel relax or relieved... He told me, he knew a 'grandma' still collects Barbie dolls and a 'Grandpa' even collects MOTU.. So is nothing wrong.... Years ago, I shared my collections photos in my Facebook, none of my FB friends give a like or comments and some of them asked me to quit all this nonsense and get a life, so I stopped posting my collections photos till I joined the toy community group and share.. Realized lots of people gave likes to my photos and all talk about it freely, then I start watching KZread about toy reviews and collecting like Pixel Dan and other toy collectors youtubers, I'm glad lots of people are collectors like me... Now I'm coming to age 40, still collecting toys and playing videogames which still brought me joy for reclaiming my childhood...

Yes Patience is the key. Waiting to find a figure you want. Companies put out preorders months or years in advance. Ebay scalpers tempt you with figures early but for insane prices. Buying vintage figures is best done with patience. While I could have bought some vintage Items I’ve wanted online, I found them in local stores and markets for far cheaper. Some of my best finds where done with this way.

Between all the arts and crafts and ceramic nick nacks they decorate our homes with. I just use the stuff I collect to decorate my man cave with. What's the difference? It's all art and it's designed to make us smile when we see it.

He's a joke character however, if we were playing him serious, he's powerful. At the end of the day it's just buying crap, which is no achievement. Don't let your identity get all tied up with buying toys or anything else. It's lame. Everyone feels pity for the adult male who has an entire room stacked with toys like it's a toy store. It indicates numerous problems. Even if you collect something 'cool' like guitars or swords it's still sad to see a grown up hemorrhaging cash over some obsessive compulsion.
