Major Fire Response to the Portola Fire in Benedict Canyon

A 35-40 acre brush fire broke out in the area of Beverly Crest just north of Beverly Hills yesterday afternoon. The fire was sparked Tuesday afternoon by someone using a weed wacker to clear brush in preparation brush fire season, according to the LAFD. 86 homes were ordered to evacuate the neighborhood but were told to return last night after 250+ firefighters made good efforts at containing the blaze. Multiple agencies responded to the incident including the Beverly Hills Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Culver City Fire Department, and the Santa Monica Fire Department.

Very good editing. I love the video and at the same time, am teary eyed thinking of what the First Responders and residents are facing. Seeing the response, hearing the sirens and feeling the urgency through this video is unsettling. Wishing safety to all involved.

I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service with 4 years full time in wildland fire management and the remainder of my career in recreation management and special use permit administration. I stayed involved in wildland firefighting for my entire career and actually increased my fire qualifications more after I left fire management. I was assigned to 108 fires in my career, including 5 weeks as a crew boss in Yellowstone in the 1988 fires. With that I have a few comments: -- L.A. City sent their Engine 9 for mutual aid as Station 9 sees so little action that they try to find something for those guys to do! For those that don't know LFD's Station 9 in some years is the most active fire station in the nation and has not fallen below #3 in many years. Between ALS and BLS they have 4 RA's (rescue ambulances). I think they average one call per 15 minutes or less over the entire year. -- I would suggest that if you want to be a part of the firefighting community you use the official abbreviations for fire departments and agencies, the 4 letter identifiers you present are hard for firefighters to understand, especially the one you made up for L.A. County. I've never seen it abbreviated that way. SMFD might be two different departments in southern California, either Santa Monica or Sierra Madre and they aren't that far apart. Here is a link to the national website for these: wfmi.nifc.gov/unit_id/Publish.html Scroll down to "Active" to see the nationwide list. The 10 Geographical Area Coordination Centers (GACC's) each publish one that includes the identifiers covering their area only, so you don't have to carry around New Jersey, if you are only interested in southern California. This is the national GACC website: gacc.nifc.gov/ -- The kind of resource also has specified abbreviations: E for engines, WT for water tenders (note they are not tankers in the Incident Command System), D for dozers, C for crew, P for Patrol, U for Utility (a pickup or small stake side truck for hauling hose, ignition fuel and the like) L for lead planes (often mistakenly referred to as "spotter aircraft by the media), AT for air tanker (in order to be a tanker it must fly), H for helicopter, HT for helitanker, AA for air attack (is responsible for the use and movement of all aircraft over a fire), D for Division (a command level position in an organization and the actual title is "Fire Management Officer" in federal agencies) or is in charge of a specific geographical portion of a large fire (these folks are usually abbreviated with DIVS), BC for battalion chief (an assistant fire management officer in federal agencies) CH or Chief for the head of a department or entire National Forest, BLM District, or a large National Park or group of nearby National Parks. CMD is for command. Finally, IC is for Incident Commander, the position in charge of an active incident. These resources can be assembled into ST's or Strike Teams (5 engines of the same type, 2 crews of the same type or 2 dozers of the same type. Each will have a strike team leader with their own transportation. Kind is the resource such as engines, crews, dozers, etc. Type if the size of capability of the resource. Engines have the most number of types with 7. There are also TF's or Task Forces. These are composed of resources of different kinds. Engines, water tenders, dozers and crews might be assembled to keep a fire out of a subdivision, for example. Note, hotshots crews are often referred to as IHC or Interagency Hotshot Crew, which are "Type 1" crews, the highest classification of wildland firefighting crews, but they still have the simple "C" on the side of their trucks, but with the name of the crew as well, examples "Dalton Hotshots" (Angeles National Forest) "Del Rosa Hotshots" (San Bernardino National Forest), "Arrowhead Hotshots" (Sequoia National Park) and "Diamond Mountain Hotshots" (BLM Northern California District). So, 16-3 should have been listed as "C16-3." I'm not sure what you meant by "CM," but I'm assuming it's command. Structural resources have additional abbreviations such as T for ladder trucks, sometimes labeled as "L" in eastern fire departments that rarely have wildland fires. HM is for hazmat. SW for swift water rescue. USAR for urban search and rescue. There are many more, but I don't remember a lot of them. In structural fire these can sometimes vary by department. For example the full station response (minus EMS) for LFD (Los Angeles Fire Department) is a task force (TF), which consists of an Engine, Truck and an engine to provide water for the truck as LFD does not use Quints. A light force (LF) is the the truck and its supporting engine only. This is a lot of information and I will end this message. I hope it helps and I hope you study up enough to use these abbreviations. Using the right terminology will eliminate any confusion.

Another comment. You usually only show the response and not the actual incident. When a person first starts in fire they like rolling Code 3 and like the apparatus they are assigned to. Rolling Code 3 and having a shiny engine is pretty cool. The public seems to like watching this. For the firefighter this wears off quickly and a person eventually gets focused on the central task of all the emergency services, making order out of chaos. That's what keeps people in a multi decade career and brings about the most internal reward. It is also the greatest challenge. I like watching your videos to see mutual aid in action. Being on a large incident with a huge camp and incident command post is a marvel of organization that shows how well developed fire mutual aid is. It is the best in California, in large part as a result of the California Office of Emergency Services. Their response organization is very impressive and they have state firefighting resources positioned all over the state, which can be mobilized very quickly. They have Type I (structural) and Type III (wildland) engines stationed with local fire departments in every nook and cranny of the state. The local department can use it as a reserve apparatus, but have to agree to quickly staff it and respond it on OES's moments notice.

So what's the difference with the Engines? (Cost, capacity, ability) Interesting how the Engine designs vary. The responding departments aren't far from each other, but all decided to go with different engines. You see more standardization in Police departments among vehicles, not so much with FD. Even police departments with less funding get the same vehicles, as the bigger departments.

ComplexBlackness It is really all to do with department preference. None of our trucks are alike at my station, our tanker is a pierce and our engines are spartans and we have a kme and an e one. Just some companies are better for different trucks (e one with ladders pierce wih engines) and sometimes its what type of units suits for what calls you will be running and where you are taking calls. A fire truck in vermont will be much different than one in south texas. In england their rigs are small because of the small streets. Again, whats suits that agency the best and their preferences

It’s a lot harder to fight fires there than here in NY, it’s in November and it’s cold as hell here, and they have to fight fires in hot weather😂, but we still have to deal with pipes and hose lines freezing. Then come summer and we are so hot and it’s hotter there!😂 We wouldn’t last along time fighting fires in Cali, but they would last a lot longer here in New York.😂 I live in the state not the city BTW.

At 2:10 there is an unmarked rig responding code and those sedans have some heavies in them like chiefs, deputy chiefs and division chiefs or commanders. At 4:36 it is impressive to see a Type I strike team rolling code in a municipal area. At 5:18 it is hard to see an LAFD battalion chief enter an intersection running code with multiple vehicles continuing to enter the intersection, putting the batt chief in a much more hazardous situation. Running code 3 is difficult and dangerous as it is, then some yahoos get the idea that their circumstances are more important than that of emergency responders. In the fire business some of us joked that the switches that turn on the lights and sirens are the "moron switches." Why, well turn them on and nearly everyone around you turns into a moron. We are not serious, but thinking about the switches in that manner makes you think more and be more cautious when you are driving with lights and sirens on, i.e. "Code 3."
