Here we have a 2009/2010 Urban Cruiser in for a non-start fault. The customer states that he broke down after driving a few miles.
Got towed to a major garage by the AA/RAC only to be told that he needs a new crankshafti (obviously incorrectly diagnosed). To find out more, keep watching the video and let’s keep on improving!

Took my wife’s Aygo to a local garage that ‘ fits things quickly’😉. Major rattle in the exhaust, got quoted entire new exhaust and cat, minimum of £950. Took it home, did some reading, changed back box myself for £60 in 20 minutes. That’s 2 years and 2 MOT’s ago, been fine ever since.

an elderly friend took her car to a garage that fits things quickly a couple of years ago, she wanted her front brakes checking as the mot was due soon. She came out with a quote for nearly £600. I looked at the quote, they said she needed pads, discs, calipers and a fluid change, utterly ridiculous. A recommended mobile mechanic came out and fitted some new pads for about £80, car went through mot. I was incensed that a major national company would try and defraud an elderly widow.

My ex had her C4 Cactus fail an MOT on emissions & the garage quoted £1100 for supply & fit DPF. They didn't provide the 1st fail emissions test results, but told her to have it serviced by them & give it a good run (despite the fact she did above average mileage & used high speed dual carriageways daily). It failed a 2nd time & after arguing they eventually provided a printout of the emissions test & they did the wrong type for a diesel 🤦🏾‍♂️ Best part was, a brand new DPF from Citroen was £550 & they quoted 1hr to change, so a sub-£1k job. Every other garage I spoke to said 1) it wouldn't need a DPF given it's age/mileage & 2) that it was a Citroen only part but easy to replace due to easy access in the engine bay. When I took it back the 3rd time, having done nothing to it, it miraculously passed when I stood & watched them emissions test it. In short, sadly, most garages are dodgy 🤷🏽‍♂️

Took mine to same outfit a few years ago as the handbrake wasn't holding the car. My usual garage were too busy and I needed it for a meeting next day. Can't remember how much but it was a few hundred quid to sort it. Next day on a slight incline I parked up and the car still rolled with the handbrake on. Took it back and they weren't interested, so I took it to my usual garage and they put it on the ramp for free. They said that new parts had been used but that the fit was bad. I phoned the garage and they fobbed me off, so I contacted an area manager online. I didn't know it at the time but that business is a franchise. They do have to maintain standards so the area manager asked me to take it to a different one and they would inspect and correct the work at no cost, which they did. I also questioned the amount I paid for the original repair as it was high. The manager asked me to get 2 independent quotes for the same repair which I did. He averaged them and then reimbursed me the difference which I think was about £150. I don't know what happened to the first garage and whether they were reprimanded in any way, or how the second outfit got reimbursed for their final fix. So if you do get stuck in a situation with that firm, contact an area manager.

obviously don't name and shame them yourself in the video as you'd be opening yourself up to a potential whole world of legal pain, libel etc, but get the customer to leave them a bad review on their google maps business pin and include photos of the damage they did to his seat and mountings, also the pics of the clearly-not-new fuel pump. At least then if other customers can see the evidence on the reviews they can make their own mind up before potentially experiencing the same fradulent practices.

I learned my lessons 20y ago after losing an engine after a dodgy timing belt change-garge only put new belt on and left old tensioner on that seized few days later. After that it was Haynes manuals and friends advice, later KZread and I’ve been working on my cars ever since. Garages like that should be named and reported for fraud. Also nice to see younger generation using oscillograph, keep up the good work.

Had to get an exhaust fitted urgently about four or five years ago. Ended up going to Quack Fit. They gave me the old spiel, "Complete exhaust and catalytic converter needs changing mate". Cost me 500 sovs. Immediately after having it fitted, whenever i went over a speed bump it sounded like the exhaust backbox was rubbing against the chassis, making a horrible noise . I took it back and told them . They put it up on the ramp and said they couldn't see anything wrong 🙄. I put up with the noise for a couple of years until it needed replacing again. This time i took it to a different garage and when they removed the old exhaust they told me the previous garage had put the wrong one on.

belter one for you, my mates mam, had a F reg mini, that the exhaust rubber failed on. The recovery didn't have one spare at the time, so he said Kwik fit is only up the road. So they recovered the car there. Kwik fit wanted to charge her for to replace the Cat. She went back to the recovery bloke, who waited with her, and told him, He said hang on! Its only needs a new rubber that's! and it doesn't have a Cat on it at all, due to the age of it. He said i tell you what lads, how about you take it back off there, and we will take it else where. They found another garage, and they charged her something daft like a £ 10 and did changed all the rubbers on the exhaust, She did tell them about kwikfit. The garage lads said they are well known for it sadly, and for charging customers and not doing services. Which i have read a few times on the car forums, and they have caught Kwik Fit out many times. Even a watch dog caught 10 stores out of kwik fits, put 10 cars in for service, and other bit and not one was touched.

One garage charged a friend of mine silly money to fix his car, which they didn't fix. Then wanted a further £600 after telling him they couldn't fix it and they didn't want to do any further work to it. He couldn't speak English well so i went and translated for him. I advised him to tell them to keep the car and not to pay a single penny more as he had already paid too much and he simply couldn't afford it. They didn't want the car taking up space in their garage so they gave it back to him without paying the further £600. Some garages are pure con artist's.

Well done. Back in 2010, I was asked by a work colleague if I could fix his car, a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. The fault was the fuel pump and I replaced it. The car started immediately. I am not a qualified mechanic!

I like your methods of diagnosis. I worked with a vehicle electrician , he was a genius, but saying that, he refused to work on cars over 2015.. to conclude, you 2 brothers are new blood in the field, keep ip the good work, you deserve recognition

A garage tried to scam me like this once, but it was on a motorbike. They basically tore the engine to pieces, left it that way, and said it would cost nearly 2k to fix it. An entire replacement engine cost me £500.

Engine needs Spark and fuel, when you turn ignition on you hear a buzz from fuel pump to pressurise the fuel tank for a few seconds. Crankshaft sensor is crucial for timing with camshaft!!!!

I find your videos very interesting and informative, even though I have over 40 years in the trade myself. When I first started out in my career, the vehicles were so much more simpler and straightforward. The vehicles that you work on are so restrictive in terms of access and have a multitude of sensors etc. I noticed that you also complain of a sore back and I’m afraid it goes with the job, all you can do is protect it as much as possible. You have become a very experienced technician and have great diagnostic skills, which I think is one of the most important aspects of the job. Keep up the good work dude and I look forward to seeing more of your next videos 👍

You’re very welcome dude👍 Like you, I did a lot of bodybuilding back in the day and I remember doing ‘stiff legged dead lifts’ on reflection it might not have been the best exercise to include in my legs and thigh routine?? I think if you keep your core back muscles strong, it may well help you over the long term, and like you said a good quality belt would be beneficial. I served for 30 years in the military and 10 years with the fire service, so I don’t just dish out compliments unless you’re on top of your game. One of the biggest ball aches for us mechanics was a clutch change on the old Land Rovers, all the seats in the front had to come out and then a jack crane to lift it clear of the engine. The easiest clutch change was on the early Vauxhall Cavaliers, 20mins start to finish 👍

That gunk had to have come from somewhere. Next time - I would suck the fuel tank dry. Leave the fuel sitting overnight to see what settles out. I would replace the fuel tank's charcoal filter in case it is breaking up due to repeated overfilling of the fuel tank.

I had a similar one to this a few years ago, A ford focus that would not start at times & pointed out to the girl I know that it was the tank pump failing,(common fault) after lifting the rear seat & giving the top of the pump a love tap!. As she wasn't local to me she went to some local mobile mechanic, Went to see her a few weeks later & the car was still not running despite of a pump being fitted, So I took up the rear seat to have a look & found a horror show, the floor pan had been totally butchered & bent to buggery probably with a blunt chisel & hammer, & then noticed that the idiot had fitted the fuel pipes wrong even though the connectors are colour coded!, So swapped the pipes over & away it went, Then made up a rather crude plate to cover the butchered hole & screwed it down, I don't think she will be calling on his services again!.

  • @chrisa6279

Owner should go back to the garage and ask them for a copy of the supply invoice for the pump parts they fitted, if one is available he should call the supplier and see if it has been returned to them. Though you have provided sufficient evidence that nothing in the fuel pump unit has been replaced and then take them to small claims court. Clearly complain to the Head Office or CEO of the business first.

Am sure your customer is very happy with you and will recommend you to everyone now. Its just a shame these garages do this and people trust these big garage chains when in reality the smaller companies often do a way better job .
