Hey everyone! Man this is a frustrating video! There was a major disaster in my saltwater fish tank. I am losing coral in my Reef. This can't be happening! Here is the thing, it is my own fault. With everything that happened last month with all the wildfires that made me evacuate my home and life, I didn't do a water change in a long time. I do have a skimmer on my system to remove organics, but I must have not been keeping up. So I tested my aquarium water. Nitrates, Phosphates and low and behold, problem found! We will go over that in the video. So I am stepping up my water change game.
I appreciate you all, thanks for watching. My analytics are showing that a large percentage of you who are watching aren't subscribed, please consider hitting that subscribe button and notification bell. You would really make my day.

You're trying to skip too many steps. And those fake rocks can't hold anything that can build up your nutrients that much. You need an export strategy to deal with the fish first. Get an algae reactor or start carbon dosing, stuff like that, and then you need to build up your confidence with easy corals. Don't get coral cocky because you can keep LPS happy in a QT tank, it's much easier than in a reef. Also your coralline algae has slowed way down. Your lights on the reef are either too dim or too blue, you need some white. The amount of algae doesn't show 30+ nitrates and .4 phosphates. So start with easier corals rather than trying to get an instant euphyllia rainbow collection lol, you're too new to do that skillfully. So arm yourself with patience.

@@inventoryking yeah, basically you're trying to turn a FOWLR into a thriving reef overnight, water parameters and, light and flow suddenly matter. It's those you need to learn to master. Usually done with easy corals and advancing from there.

It all about patients, it’s taken me two years to get my 500 litre tank to be fully cycled reef and only now just stared putting main hammers and torches in. I started of with Caribsea Life Eco Rock and mixed in with some live rock to get it seeded which took ages, after 3 months I started putting corals in like acans and hammers but even these I lost as it was to early to put them in. Started of with a few clown fish and mushrooms and gradually built it up over the course of two years and only now it’s looking more like a reef tank. It will come together, I’ve learnt over time not to rush things. Time and patients is key especially in the hobby.

Yeah, this is a fun hobby 😂 recommend 10% weekly water changes, could be trace elements and stability. The water level in the overflow is too high, this prevents surface skimming - that takes out all the “bad stuff”. We’ve had about a year of issues trying to dial in our tank, definitely weekly water changes help the most.

sorry for your euphylias. It's a heartbreak... If I may suggest an idea: the two pumps you added in the back, put them on the side instead of the bottom you will get a better flow to move all the dirt in the water column. You may also consider a lighter aquascaping, allowing a better circulation of water in the tank. All the best for the future and thanks for sharing. Regards from Geneva Switzerland

Takes a year for some people. Some people 8 months. Or even sooner. Just isn’t all about the technology and dosing and what not. Your rocks will mature over time. With how careful and long you went with quarantining corals. I'm surprised you let your nitrates and phosphates get that high. I'm sure you're already aware of this, but you should look into growing some macro algae in your sump to help with nutrient export since you have so many large fish. I don't think it had anything to do with time cause your beneficial bacteria was getting rid of the ammonia and nitrites very well. That's the main thing we worry about when it comes to "time" This really sucks though. I've had my reef tank for about a year. It takes me months of setting aside money for corals and if I lost them at that scale. I would be very close to shutting it down. You have more resolve than me!

What is typically used to combat the ammonia spikes when you don't have plants? Or do corals have the capacity to take in the nutrients from the fish poo?

I keep fresh water aquariums and have a decent understanding of the chemistry. But I feel like a mix tank of plants and corals could potentially be really good to create symbiotic relationships. I use my plants to make no filter ones. And it makes it really nice and chill.

@@MrGrombie The ammonia should never spike. Decomposing larger organisms is usually the cause of ammonia spikes. The ammonia ends up as nitrate as you know, corals do take up nitrates, but it's not that fast and it really depends on how well kept the corals are and wether or not they are fast growing. This is why we have export methods in reef keeping. Refugiums, algae reactors, algae scrubbers, carbon dosing and chemical filtration. So we can process the nitrate and phosphate.

Hm, I am not as experienced with LPS, but fro. The amount that died off, it seems like some kind of bacterial event. With LPS, that kind of thing spreads like crazy. I know it sucks to lose so many, especially the high end ones like the dragon soul. I do think you are kinda hitting the panic button too fast, though. Any bacterial issue is going to spread much faster in high flow. Plus LPS can get cut up on high flow, making them vulnerable. The nutrients and your fish load are kinda high, but I don't see tons of algae growth on the skeletons. These corals should be able to handle the nutrients. I would stagger your feeding schedule, possibly look at reheoming or spreading your fish out. Also, keep an eye on your alk and pH. Big swings, not the numbers themselvss, are often what cause this kind of thing.

PLEASE READ!!! Very humble of you to post but his makes me cringe! There were so many nice euphylia that were totally wasted. You are NOT going to be able to export enough nutrients on water changes alone, even with auto changes. Too much water volume for that, your talking gallons of water to change each and everyday. It's just not practical. You will have to incorporate some more equipment. Definitely put a GFO reactor online and take care of those phosphates. For nitrates, either biopellet reactor (highly recommend), liquid carbon dosing or a very large refugium, a small fuge isn't going to export enough nutrients. In a larger volume of water and trying to keep the coral you have, you must incorporate the right tools for nutrient export. Please listen to criticism, do more research and save those beautiful corals by getting the proper equipment. Good luck!

When I tested and upped the % to 40-45 it was 100 part give or tank on the sandbed, and like 140+ on the top of the rock work. So at 18% it was much lower par. Might need to tweak the spectrums?

@@inventoryking I keep everything simple and have a dedicated torch 65 Red Sea xl 300 tank. So please take that into consideration as many ways to skin the cat. I run 1 Radion blue g5, 1 good skimmer, 1 return pump, 2 EcoTech power heads. Chemicals - 2 part from bulk reef supply plus magnesium at 4:1. For every 20 ml of alkalinity I add 5 ml of magnesium. No trace elements as you keep them plenty with 5% water change weekly or I do 10 to 15% every two weeks. 1.025 salinity tropic Marin. I measure dkh every day at same time in evening with Hanna checker. The drops are not specific enough. Hanna will save you. 8.5 is my goal. Let dKh be your only guide and you won’t poison them. I rarely check calcium or mag but when I do it is spot on. My tank uses only 9 ml of 2 part daily about 80 gal total system. Keep the dkh stable is #1. Lighting- starts 8 am purple violet spectrum. Ramps up and slowly gets whiter to ab+ spectrum at 2pm. Also max par at this time, Never exceed 150 par on any coral. Now my light is 38%. Then ramps down and goes back to purple violet spectrum then dim moon light. Moonlight starts 11pm They seem to love bluer spectrums and are a deeper water coral in nature so makes sense. Ok so my light holds its peak for only 1.5 hours so corals get way less light than 65 - 150 most of the time. My 7 head dragon hellfire and 6 head ny knicks or whatever averages around 75 par. Yes my viewable light duration is long because I enjoy them before and after work. My tank is 3ft wide approx and the single Radion spreads plenty edge to edge. A couple never get above 65 par and do great. I am very surprised at how little they need and like. Feed and export- 1 ss150 reef octopus skimmer wet, nylon socks, floss. They love pe calamus and brine. Mine spit out Mysis, however, many supposedly like Mysis. 3 times a week with a baster. I feed lots and have zero algae. Here is why- I put a square of floss over the sock openings and change every day, then change sock after 3 days. Water flowing through food fuels a tank for algae quickly. Floss is cheap, you don’t use much, and is easy. Twice a week i run my water through a carbon reactor, but, I use a carbon filter instead of granules. They also like a surprising amount of intermittent flow. Wow, I hope that does it. When things are right they are unbelievably strong corals and grow very fast. Good luck Buddy!
