MAINTAINING YOUR SCUBA DIVING REGULATORS | How to Rinse a Scuba Diving Regulator | SCUBA DIVING

Спорт

A guide to Scuba Divers how best to rinse, clean and maintain the servicability of their Scuba Diving Regulators after every dive and in between servicing periods. In doing this right, you will avoid costly service repairs, reduce the likelyhood of a freeflowing Scuba Diving Regulator and understand how to look after your own kit!
Shout out to @emmayhughes for asking me to make this video!
A guide for the new or experienced diver to the best practices of regular regulator cleaning and sterilising their Scuba Diving Regulators. Fitting the Dust Cap properly prevents water or dust entering the First Stage Regulator or the O ring from loss or damage, rinsing of the Second Stage regulator reduces salt and debris build up on the intricate working parts, proper cleaning of the mouth piece prevents dirt or bacteria build up on it, then a final soaking in clean and fresh water dilutes salt and other nasties building up in the small nooks and crannies of your expensive Scuba Diving Regulators.

    So: 1. Rinse 2nd stage & octo under running water 2. Disinfect mouthpiece 3. Soak everything overnight in water 4. Hang dry Will try it out 👍🏼 Thank you 💯

    More so after salt water diving but not bad practice to at least rinse the 2nd stages out after every day diving

    Buy a tub of silicone grease, learn how to remove the purge button cover off your reg, remove diaphram - clean properly and replace with a 'thin' smear of silicone grease. Also get rid of the hose protectors - they should be renamed salt / rust accumulators. Undo all of your hoses and learn how to replace the o-rings. You will save yourself a bunch of money and become much more aware of your gear in the process. Leave the 1st and 2nd stage overhauls to your LDS - but you will find that your gear will last 3 times as long if you understand it and look after it.

    Hi Andy, can you do a short video on field work repairs I.e. taking apart the new apex MTX-R cold water regs .

  • @AndytheNorthernDiver

    @AndytheNorthernDiver

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi David, the only field repairs a diver (that isn't a qualified maintainer) should be doing is replacing a missing O ring from the first stage DIN or A Clamp. The reason being is all the connections have specific torque settings which aren't published and the tools are not likely to be carried for field repairs. I'd suggest, keep you regs clean, rinsed, sterilised (as per my recent video) and serviced regularly, and when diving somewhere that you don't have immediate access to a dive centre, take a spare set of regs with the group just incase. Hope this helps mate

    Love your videos Andy, some of the best out there on the subject of diving. As a beginner diver this is really helpful, I live in a small flat so space is an issue which makes cleaning a challenge. what i've done is brought a cheap £8 stanley toolbox from toolstation that fits my regs in, I use that to transport from home to divesite and then when i get home i give the regs a rinse and then fill the box with water and soak the regs in there overnight. Can I put Milton in the box to sterilise the full reg set to save time or should i be removing the mouthpiece and doing this separately after each day of diving?

    Good idea mate, the sterilisation and cleaning only needs to be done a couple times a year or if someone borrows them. Although soaking after salt water is mega important and rinsing after every dive day just as much regardless of water type. Thanks for watching and liking what I’ve done mate

    They weren’t mine, I was servicing for a friend. Great design though, especially if you’re in really cold water and likely to freeze them, these should be perfect, no need in warmer waters though.

    Hi, thanks for the video. (Love the MTX-R regs btw. ;) ). Is that disinfectant really called sterilising fluid over at your place? Or wouldn‘t it rather be disinfectant or sanitizer? There actually is a difference between disinfected an sterile.

    You submerge your entire regulator including the first stage and the DIN port? Wouldn't this get water inside your first stage? A typical dust cap might not be watertight.

  • @AndytheNorthernDiver

    @AndytheNorthernDiver

    Жыл бұрын

    It’s submerged in 3” of water I have apeks regs, apeks dust caps and orings on the din fittings. If they let water in there’s a bigger problem to worry about. Second stages are always submerged so that’s not an issue. If you’re worried about ingress, just don’t submerge your first stage. Thanks for watching

  • @ndepal
    @ndepal Жыл бұрын

    Is it a good idea to submerge the first stage regulator like that? Seems like you're risking water flowing into it through the DIN fitting if the dust cap isn't completely tight, which would be quite bad for the regulator and require it to be serviced, no?

  • @AndytheNorthernDiver

    @AndytheNorthernDiver

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s why you screw the cap on, water in the regs won’t mean they need to be serviced but it will cause damage to the spg as it can’t really be blown out. After any salt water diving this is what I do. Up to you if you want to do the same.

  • @ndepal

    @ndepal

    @@AndytheNorthernDiver Thanks for the reply! I'm quite paranoid about getting water into my 1st stage as I believe to have learned that this can lead to regulator freezes. I wasn't even aware of the SPG issue, good to know. If you accidentally briefly submersed the 1st stage without the cap on, would you continue using it or have it serviced first?

    Because of the amount of gunk that gets trapped under the zip tie and mouth piece.
