Awesome informative video, thank you for sharing. The only question I have is during the winter I can't go out with my rig. I winterize the plumbing but I wonder how can I run the gas out of the lines for the winter. I hope that gets covered in the next video. Love these tech tips thank you for these tips.

Your videos are great! just wondering if you could point me in the right direction on an issue. On my 2006 keystone raptor, i was in the process of replacing the fuel pump. my issue is the primer/start switch. normally when I held down the prime switch a red light would come on after a few seconds now it does not come on and the fuel pump makes no noise at all,[would make noise but not pump fuel, that is why I am replacing it] but when I flip it towards start the generator will turn over. Any ideas where to start?

I scratch the date and hours into the oil filter. Sharpie can fade or wear off. I also write it down in the maintenance log. Marking the filter is a backup just in case.

Question for Todd regarding condensation: is it normal for condensation to happen between the fiberglass insulation and the silver insulation in the roof? My whole front cap up to my roof is condensing. I’m definitely putting a dehumidifier on for the rest of my life, but in the meantime, does that happen easily/normally?

Have an Onan 5500. I cycle it once a month for about an hour with a load after a warm up period. I have changed the oil once a year even though thats all it gets used. Do look at the filter as well. The one issue i have is about a month ago my remote hour meter stopped displaying. Only 3 years old. Should i test for 12v and if it does just get a new meter? Thanks

I have an ONAN 4000 watt generator. When I put a simple Load like an electrical water pot to boil water it shuts down. Then I need to wait for it to cool down to restart. I have about 850 hours on a 2005 used RV. Original owners were very clean and fastidious.

Have you been keeping up with the maintenance and, most importantly, exercising the generator every month? I would start with cheapest parts and work up from there: replace fuel filter first. If problem persists replace fuel pump. If problem persists either replace the carb or take it apart and clean it (Technically it's not a serviceable item but it can be broken down and cleaned). I like to keep a spare fuel filter and pump on hand because they get clogged / varnished easily. The stock fuel filter that comes off the pump is not much of a filter - even though it's got a bulge like it contains a filter all it has is a fine mesh screen. If gasoline without treatment has sat for an extended period it starts to varnish and clog the pores. I suggest exercising the generator under load twice a month, but at a minimum you need to be running it under a load once a month for at least an hour. My 2017 Onan has 2,500 hours on it and still runs like new......the worst thing you can do to these generators is not use them.

@@cruisinguy6024 I can run the generator but adding load shuts it down… will try the filter and then maybe the voltage regulator…. I can measure the voltage and there is plenty but can’t verify the phase.

My Onan 7500 quiet diesel generator runs fine with one 15k AC but if I try to run two, it surges and struggles or trips a 20 amp AC breaker in the RV. Where should I start? Can weak house batteries cause the issue because they are old and drain quickly, so after 2 weeks the charger or inverter has to work hard to charge them. Could new house batteries solve this or should I focus on the generator?

The house batteries have nothing to do with the the AC units and generator, the only potential involvement of the house batteries is to start the generator. How old is it and how many hours are on your generator? Are you current on all maintenance? Specifically which breaker is tripping? Each AC should have its own breaker.

That would be quite surprising as Onan has separate product lines for RV, Commercial Mobile Power, and Marine applications. A big difference between Marine and RV is a) Marine are diesel, b) marine are rated for constant use and have longer warranties and c) marine generators have significantly longer service intervals.

@@DanPusateriI'm not familiar with the 4000 but the larger Onan gas generators pull air from underneath the generator. Opening the door on the RV doesn't change anything. I'm looking at pictures of your model generator now and see there's vents cutaway on the front of the generator so I wonder if it's pulling air in from the front - in which chase the RV compartment should have a way for fresh air to pass through. If not then you'd need to open the door - but the whole point of an onboard generator is to run it while driving and without having to do anything physically (other than starting it of course)
