Steam life is back, why the extra help on the trains. Eg class 20 and 47😭

DRS Class66 A few possible reasons. A. For the return trip on routes where the steam locomotive cannot be turned. B. In case of breakdown en route. C. To assist up steep gradients. D. To act as a buffer in case of rear-ending because heritage stock was not built to modern standards and modern trains, being both stronger and faster, could cause great loss of life in the event of a rear-end collision. A locomotive at the back can helpbto absorb the kinetic energy of a collision. Sometimes a modern carriage is added instead. Depends on route, locomotive, other timetabling and stock as to whether an engine is added on.
