Maiden Flights can be no fun at all. Building a giant scale RC model, Ryan's Rebel RCM Plans

EP 43.5: Maiden Flights are no fun
One of the most stressful things you can do with a newly finished model, is take it out on its first voyage into the air. Yeah, no kidding… None of the trims are set other than maybe the throttle. It could leap into the air with no issue, or it can be a wild bull coming out of the pen. You have to interpret quickly how much the servos are acting, or over acting. You will find out how well you placed your CG, and how well you set the needles on your engines mixture. A lot of things can happen. But like my flying buddy Mark says; “If something is gonna happen, it will happen out there” That’s his quote from Captain Ron. Great movie. Check it out.
Anyway, today I will talk you through my procedures for getting to that flight, what I do and don’t do. This will be after everything that is done in the shop is complete including lateral, and CG balancing, and refers to engine testing, and preflight range testing.
Strap in, and hang on.

    Dan, I really enjoyed this series. It certainly helped me get through a tough total knee replacement in February and I thank you for that. I like the way that the maiden video was done. It was just enough video of the flight and you keyed in on the important elements of your flight and the zoom/size was good for viewing. I agree with you on the folks that video their flight and all you are looking at is a sky with maybe a dot, if that is the case I tend to turn it off, who wants to look at nothing, particularly knowing that you can easily zoom in an iPhone 2X or 3X and get great results. Wishing you continued success with your Ranger and I look forward to your take on the FrSky 18 and your next build. Tom

    Thanks Tom, wishing you a fast recovery on your landing gear. Glad you liked the series. I will probably talk some more about the Fr Sky system and some of the things that we have learned as we continue to set up more aircraft with their gear. I'm still learning It and fine tuning the settings. But like to share and will probably be asking for help from everyone who is following.

    Great job Dan and Mark. Loved the flight and the whole series. Nice field too. I just maiden my Arrows RC Husky at the Silverhills RC club grass field north of Hayden Idaho where I live. I wasn't so successful, had a stripped rudder servo, short flight and nosed it in on the right wing tip. Broken aeleron linkage horn not sufficiently glued from the factory. Made most of the repairs now. Installing the new rudder servo now and put everything back together and go try again soon. I am also scratch building two 50" Fly Babys from a set of plans.

    Those maiden flights always gave me the shakes... Good point about unknown trims and controls on the first flight. Even if you are building from a plan or kit, and set the control surface throws to specifications, it may still turn out to be too much or too little for comfort. What has worked well for me is to set the throws a little larger than what I think they have to be, then use Dual Rate or Expo on at least the elevator and ailerons. That will give you fine control even if the deflections are larger than they should be, and you maintain control authority when the throws are on the small side and you need to compensate quickly for a large trim error.

  • @Capgains7777

    @Capgains7777

    Agreed, and don't forget to expo that rudder. Having a little expo will keep you from over correcting your takeoff. I would rather have a little too much throw than not enough. After that first flight or two you can reduce if you think things are too hot.

    That's one thing I was kind of afraid of, making a build series and then destroying it on the maiden. But this design is so simple I wasn't too worried. I did wreck one on a maiden several years ago. I was going through a GeeBee fetish and built an Adrian Page GeeBee R-2. Spent a lot of time to make it perfect. Everyone warned me that the R2 is hard to land. Like they always nose over. It flew great very responsive but stable. When it came time to land I had too much speed and the gear crumpled. And I didn't have the energy or heart to give it any more time. It is still in my storage unit.

    FrSky range check function reduces the transmitter power to 1/30th of normal, or at least that's what it is for my X10S. Also, the FrSky Tandem series of transmitters requires their tandem receivers to get the benefit of simultaneous 2.4gHz and 900mHz. The Tandem transmitters are backwards compatible and will work with ACCST D16 protocol receivers. Congrats on the successful maiden.

    Thanks Don!!! Yep I have a lot to learn on this 18x. I have a 10x that I just changed from OpenTX to EdgeTX. The only thing I don't like is the 10x is its like holding a patio paver. I might do some videos about the Fr Sky systems but there are a couple of English chaps that do a great job with programming and updates. I just want to make it do what I need and fly it.

    Like what I have seen with the Radio master. I lightened up by getting the Tandem and Ethos is a little more intuitive. The Horus is able to run my XPS Rxs with the JR module box. Which is cool but complicated. Yeah once everything went 2.4 the options for geeky radios went through the roof. Did you ever own Multiplex?

  • @Capgains7777

    @Capgains7777

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't think there was any bad characteristics of flight with this one. Very much just a giant stick. Landing is easy, stall speed is low and didn't notice a tip stall. The Ailerons can be toned down as they are full strip so way too much throw is available. Mark built flaps on his. I don't think they are necessary as this plane slows down nicely. Manuverability is great and predictable. It has no recovery features like washout or dyhedral so, you gotta fly it the whole time. Yet it is stable. I was sceptical the 30cc would power it adaquately but was wrong. Power is perfect. Ryan told me it would be. Pretty much just a fully capable manuvering design that will do everything you want, although I haven't tried to flat spin it yet. I am excited to finally have this one flight worthy.

    I believe I used an X8R which is the older version protocol accst Rx I bought to use with a Horus 10 radio a few years back. It’s a little confusing all of the options available with these FrSky radios. The guys at Aloft Hobbies told me for IC gassers the best protection for noise is the Archer line of Rxs that use Access protocol. However I have read many forums where guys are using the ACCST for long time now and no problems with ignition noise. With a tandem radio you also have the option of duel band RXs that cost a little more but transmit on two totally different bands at once making better redundancy. Probably going to have a show and tell about these radios in the future. I really like them.

  • @Capgains7777

    @Capgains7777

    8 ай бұрын

    They are standard sized Hitec servos, HS545BB, which are nothing really special. I built the Rebel with parts that I had on hand of which most came from retired planes. On larger planes if I had to buy new servos I would probably use Hitec 635MG (metal gears) as they are a great choice for strength and reliability used by many giant scale modelers. Once again nothing special, plain ol analog servos but simple, powerful and good. At some point I would like to research some digital options, because I know there has to be smaller, lighter and more powerful servos I can use, but I still have these analogs in my stock so I will use them up first.

    I totally get that. Take your time, build it straight, and set it up with proper throws and CG. Have some faith in the design of the aircraft. A lot of people have flown Cubs and you can too. My only advice specific to cubs is, use the rudder to make it track straight on take off and make sure you have the tail flying before you apply elevator to lift off the runway. Because the wing on a Cub is longer than the fuse and a big popcicle stick, the plane will torque left when you give it throttle. Be ready to add some right rudder to track it straight. Cub flyers are good drivers. Good luck.

    It's like a young eagle standing on the edge of the nest high above the canyon about to jump for the first time. Will it fly or will it fall to its death? I know the feeling well. I did not set out to be an rc test pilot. It evolved. A friend asked if I would maiden his plane. It went well and another friend asked. Over time I was a popular guy to go to if you wanted someone to test your plane. I have encountered most every problem you can imagine. I do my best to catch potential problems during my preflight check list. The usual suspects are out of balance (tail heavy is awful), low battery, controls reversed, not enough power to weight ratio, airplane not symetrical, does not track straight, wheels sticking, gear not forward enough on tail draggers, rates-expo not within reason, gyro settings not correct and gyro not set on a switch that can turn it off, bad or wrong size prop, props reversed, props not on tight, plane stuck in 'safe' mode with hardly enough throw to control the plane, receiver problems at distance - can catch with range test, an owner who expects me the test pilot to pay for the damage if there is a problem beyond my control - so I get their sign off on that before I fly ! I like to walk the runway and check for debris. Then the last thing is I like to have the sky to myself. There are always mixed emotions just before takeoff - I try to focus on just one thing - fly the aircraft. I run thru the sequence in my mind before throttle forward then try not to over think it but to trust my experience.

  • @Capgains7777

    @Capgains7777

    I have been there myself. The test pilot. I always tell people that I will do my best but no guarantees. Check the plane out, ask questions, charge status, engine run time, range check, was a CG done, hope they did it right. And yes, just fly the plane. Funny thing is, and something I brought up in this video is the emotional attachment you get from building the plane and then taking it to the air. For some reason when I am test flying someone's plane, I don't get that adrenaline rush. It's like all business. Not so much fly it like you don't have a dime in it, but the shakyness isn't there. I really think the time and care to build it causes that nervous attachment.

The minimum wingspan to be able to participate in fly ins and competitions is 80 inches for mono wings, and 60 inches for bi planes or a true 1/4 scale model. As for true scale…. No I never said this is a true scale model. Its a sport model.
