Homura needs hugs. Lots of hugs. Poor girl can't catch a break. From the meek, sickly girl to a time traveler then fell into despair and became a witch and ended up as a demon... all because of her wish to save one girl.

Lots and lots of hugs from Madoka... She wanted to save her but she also got dragged into magical girls in a similar way than Madoka. Madoka died right in front of Homura.I feel sorry for her because it's just like the feeling that your best friend had suddenly died. If I ever could see Moemura again, even after the life of despair, I would cry. If only Madoka could hug her again. Poor Homura..........

Rachel Wischerman I am a big fan of Homura too.. I mean she risked her life to save her friend over and over and over so many times. Madoka protected her before she had become a witch during Walpurgis. Homura is honestly my favorite. She had so much despair. She had actually survived being a witch. Beacause of Madoka.

Some people may criticise the latest movie and say the twist sucks. But that's because one watches the movie with a God's perspective. They are so naive. If I were Homura, I would do the exactly same thing. Being an orphan... Witnessing your best friend's death hundreds times, suffering to save her yet she's gone forever? I can't even imagine the pain! I think this movie is excellent. So deep. So touch.

It's even worse, because Homura doesn't see Madoka as a best friend - she sees her as perfection. Homura *loves* Madoka, and it's certainly not our understanding of love. When she said "this emotion is mine and mine alone", she wasn't kidding; no human could ever truly understand how she feels. Not to mention Madoka would never be happy living eternity onward as a despair-collecting entity of hope, no matter what she might say. Homura not only didn't make the wrong decision, she made the right decision.

I hated the twist at first, I thought it came totally out of nowhere and was absolutely not what Homura would do. No matter how you interpereted her attitude towards Madoka, she'd never in a million years hurt Madoka so selfishly, that's absolutely the opposite of what she'd do. Hell, five minutes ago she was absolutely willing to sacrifice her life to keep Madoka happy by turning into... a... witch.... Wait a second.Turning into a witch causes a Magical Girl to become a twisted and monstrous version of themselves, making them do things that they'd never do in a million years before they turned. Homura would never hurt Madoka selfishly, but Homulilly would. Madoka may have saved Homura from her despair, but the mental damage was already done. Every other witch had been saved by the Law of Cycles before turning, not after. Homura was the only one saved after, and she remained evil as a result. After realising that, the twist made more sense.

Homura had effectively become a fusion between a Magical Girl and a Witch, but not in the way you're thinking. What Homura did was entirely under her control and by her own thoughts. She's not hurting Madoka - she's saving her from a miserable existence as a deity, aka an existence she's not ready for, no matter how she may wish it. Madoka can still achieve her dream of helping people WITHOUT sacrificing herself to go become Pink Reaper for all eternity. Extremes, people! In the Homuverse [aka a universe-sized witch labyrinth], everyone finally gets their happy ending. Madoka gets to be with her family and doesn't die or become Kriemhild Gretchen, Sayaka is able to help Kyosuke and let go of the affections she harbors for him that will never be returned, Kyoko doesn't have to worry about starving to death ever again, Mami finally has a friend to stick by her, and Nagisa can eat cheese again. Everyone but Homura is happy, and the Incubators get taught not to bite off more than they can chew. I'd say that's a way better ending than Homura getting taken away by the Law of Cycles and Kyuubey eventually capturing Madoka, making the entire series' events meaningless.

People always tend to miss the biggest character moment Homura has, and to be fair I only saw it on my third watching of the film. In that flower field scene with Madoka, you can see her wrestling with the dilemma of whether to sacrifice herself to free Madoka and let her continue being a god, or to betray Madoka's wishes and strip her of her godhood so as to keep her a prisoner, happy but at the cost of the rest of the world. You can see this dilemma represented with the flowers, as Homura realises that Madoka is scared of leaving her friends behind and begins to lean towards the idea of betraying her for her own good, the flowers all become dark and corrupted, reflecting Homura's mind. But as the conversation hits it's climax, the flowers wither and become bright lights as Homura, now more peaceful in expression, voice, and mind (her mind reflected by the peaceful landscape) assures Madoka that she _is_ brave and stronger than she realises, and when the time comes she'll be able to do what is right. In this instance, Homura chooses to sacrifice herself and let Madoka continue to be god, trusting that Madoka is strong and brave despite everything she's saying. That's why she refuses to call to Madoka when she is revealed as the Witch, and why she openly expresses a desire to die at the hands of her friends after becoming a Witch, "Mami Tomoe and Kyoko Sakura are both here, I have faith in them." When Madoka begins to try to save her anyway, she cries out "you don't understand, I have to die here!" And indeed in all the trippy imagery, when we see Madoka dive into Homura's mindscape to save her, Homura's form has become twisted and corrupted like a Witch, covered in darkness. Only then does she pull a complete 180 and betray Madoka, having become a Witch and been consumed by her inner darkness she's no longer the same Homura she was before, now cruel and selfish enough to force Madoka down from the heavens and to damn the world despite what Madoka wants in order to give her a happy life. Before becoming a Witch and being brought back from it, Homura never had any intention of becoming a demon, but one failed sacrifice led her down a path coated with her own inner darkness. The poor girl.

I understand your analysis and your take on the imagery is right and perhaps even homura stating that she wants to die there then become evil. But I think you've missed something, Homura has been thinking about betraying madoka for a while and throughout the movie she may not have fully known she was a with but she had some idea. Sayaka and Charlotte obviously also knew homura was a witch and sayaka was leaning towards homura being completely evil. It's difficult to say poor homura because even though she went through everything to save madoka, she hated the idea of madoka being separated and eventually gave into that desire to do anything to have her back. Hence the whole ending scene with homura telling madoka "one day we may have to fight on opposite sides." Homura is fully aware of her actions and even though she's struggling to carry them out at the end of the day it was her decision, it wasn't being corrupted which swayed her decision. If that was the case she would have been completely transformed into a witch which we know never happened.

homura is such a sweet girl who deserved so much better than she was given, she sold her soul in order to try to save her best friend only to be stuck in the same hellish month for twelve years only to finally fail worse than she could ever imagine and have her erased from existence. she managed to keep going by telling herself that madoka was happy with the choice she ended up making, vowing to protect the world that madoka held so dear, but that was a lie, without madoka, her friend, the girl she came to love, she had lost her purpose in life and fell into despair, thus kickstarting rebellion. she sees the existence of a witch in madokas new world an afront to madoka and everything she and therefor homura hold dear, taking her wish and throwing it back in her face she was absolutely destroyed in the flowerbed scene, when she realizes that madoka WASN'T happy as being the law of cycles she wasnt just sad, she wasnt just upset, she was horrified that she had allowed this to happen. it was now when she decided that she would do whatever she could to save her, and take up her role as madokas protector again the entirety of her witch symbolism says that she hates herself with every fiber of her being, that she despises who and what she is and the things she did in the loops. her only wish remaining is to kill herself so madoka can still be safe because she sees herself as the problem. all the clara dolls represent things she sees in herself or associates with herself, none of them are good, and they all call her a good for nothing, a nutcracker that has failed in its sole function, madokas friend who failed to save her. the last one, Love, has yet to arrive, she doesnt see herself as someone who can be loved she eventualy grows to understand that the incubators will see madoka, and unless something is done they will keep trying until they finaly destroy the one thing she gave up everything, her life, her memories, her individuality, her chance of every seeing her family again, her happiness, in order get. she will do anything, no matter how sinful, in order to stop this, even if she is damned shes alright with it, as long as madoka is safe she then tears madoka in half, pulling her human self out of the law of cycles while taking that burden onto herself, she is now the one to lead away magical girls she creates a new usiverse where she can make sure that everyone is able to be safe, safe and happy, where they don't need to fight or hurt anymore. but its her own self inflicted hell, her minions hate her, they pelt her with tomatoes even as she does her best to just act like a stereotypical villain (to poor results, knocking over a teacup? letting an apple fall in the river? really homura?). we even see the clara dolls acting out suicide. she even comes to believe that madoka hates her now, and gives back her ribbons, both as a bookend and to signal that she cant be with madoka anymore she wants desperately to die, to be made to pay for her own self believed transgressions. she calls herself evil because in her mind she is, she betrayed madoka, even if it was only in order to save her she betrayed the girl she loves in order to do it in the end homura managed to save everyone, bring everyone back to life, give everyone their happiness that they so deserved everyone but herself

I disagree. Homura didn't save anyone, not even Madoka; she created a new labyrinth in which people are 'happy' only because their memories were removed. That is a betrayal of their rights as living beings to live a genuine life. But it's so easy to understand why Homura did it (the reasons you give, for instance). And I love her.

  • @bennitori4

I feel like this is the best summary of Homura and her actions. It's easy to say that she should have just been happy to be excepted as part of Madoka's law of cycles the way Sayaka and Nagisa were. But we also know that Homura is too smart and self reliant to rely on Madoka to protect herself. Homura herself was an example of the incubators now having a way to bait and attack Madoka. So Homura took matters into her own hands. And while one would argue whether this was the right thing to do, it makes sense given Homura's willingness to do terrible things for the sake of those she holds dear.

  • @maple1444

the moment in the flowerbed scene was the main changing point for homura. she realized madoka would never want to be away from her loved ones and madoka’s wish was worse than death. she realized that she failed to protect her again. she hated herself and blamed herself for it. and the fact that she had to face this guilt and pain ALONE is even more heartbreaking. no one else knows what she’s been through, what she’s seen. ensuring madoka’s safety was her only hope she could grasp on to. and when she realized she failed again and probably made her fate worse, she gave in to her despair. she hated herself so much for failing which is why her witch form, homulily, wants to execute itself.

Even when the magical girls regain their memories, they wouldn't fight Homura, they would show her she mattered and is loved, because magical girls spread hope and happiness. About the flowerbed scene, that is definitely Madoka's answer if she hadn't experienced what she has in the original show as that Madoka that was talking to Homura forgot her godhood and in turn forgot the things that happened in the show and no, I'm not saying your reasonings are wrong as I believe Madoka would be sad but also happy watching her friends not fight and work together to spread hope but what makes me really think hurts Madoka is not being able to talk to her mom or dad anymore or play with Tatsuya anymore. Homura's actions are completely understandable.

there's something tragic about the fact that the original madoka from before Homura's wish is dead and gone forever because, remember, this Madoka was more confident and stronger than the one after Homura's wish. if Homura's time traveling confirms anything, its that every new timeline is a different Madoka, meaning Homura's left behind hundreds of Madoka's behind to die. The guilt she must feel for this is... unimaginable. poor homura... moral of the story: move on... the grieving process is a painful one for sure, but Homura needs to accept that Madoka is gone and she cannot do anything about it truly...

I hate how people fall into extremes with Homura, either the "did nothing wrong" camp or "complete monster" What is so great about Homura is how complex she is, that is why Rebellion is ultimately, like Paradise Lost which it was based on, a tragedy. What Homura does is a mix of both selfishness and selflessness born out of the deepest love and the deepest hurt. As 0:52 shows she is not allowing Madoka to become what she wants which is bad, but she Isn't Yuno Gasai, she truly does love Madoka for Madoka but she has been hurt so much it has driven her mad. Let's remember that she was willing to kill herself to save Madoka and the others. This is why I love the twist of Rebellion, it reinvents the story of God and Lucifer in a way that makes it more powerful than any other I have seen because it makes them Yin and Yang. It is a story of Love where Lucifer's "crime" is not arrogance, or pride but that she loved God far more than she could love herself.

Exactly, honestly Homura is somewhat in between. You can see why people don’t like her given that she forcefully stripped Madoka from godhood (I still like her, I really like flawed characters.) but you can also sympathize with her too, because of how much she’s been through.

I mean to me, this is just an example of someone who is doing something wrong because they believe the other choice goes against all they hoped to achieve. You could definitely say she ended up doing the wrong thing but the fact that her whole journey literally started with finding a way to make sure Madoka stays alive and well and together with her and how in the end, the good ending doesn't give her that, just mere temporary comfort in the fact that Madoka sees her as her dearest friend to the very end when she practically erases her human self. The part of Madoka who made Homura believe in herself again when she was suffering from low-self esteem. The Madoka who Homura knew for years while living the same month around a 100 times and saw as probably her ideal person. The Madoka for whom she was willing to spent years getting metaphorically punched in the gut really hard several times in several time-loops. The Madoka for whom she was willing to sacrifice everything else. While I personally would have liked it if Homura chose to honor Madoka by dedicating herself to protecting people from wraiths as the anime wasn't really lacking in it's conclusion and I was willing to believe that maybe Homura could choose to move on, the addition of Rebellion is very much welcome because it still stays true to the character of all those involved and does not ruin the characterization of anybody when showing us a tragic follow-up to the main series. Also, we have to admit that reasons aren't excuses. In the end, her actions were harmful and non-accepting of the will of others. She's basically a tragic figure who didn't believe she could have made better choices or let things go as they are. Not to mention being rather broken on an emotional plane. Maybe the new movie coming by the end of this year may give her a more positive ending. Though that's just as possible as another tragic ending by now since we have zero idea what could happen in the new movie.

in my opinion, although kyubey are incapable of feeling emotions, they should still be eradicated, they're just too dangerous to be left alive (no reference intended). they're literally trying to go against the laws of the universe just to stop entropy, they're megalomaniacs who won't be satisfied no matter how much energy they have.

And I would never abandon you. So don't give up. Homura Akemi: I'm sorry... I'm so spineless... I wanted to see you one more time. And if I had to go so far as to betray that wish... Some use Rebellion to justify Homura’s actions. But there shouldn’t be justification on either side, Madoka and Homura were both dealt cruel fates. The difference being is that Madoka’s cruel fate was a selfless one, saving countless others. Homura may have done the right thing for herself (and only taking the part of Madoka from the Law was clever) but the Homura we see at the end of the movie is twisted by her witch transformation. The analysis of Homura’s character in the Wraith Arc should be the final Homura we know and love, one that swears to protect Madoka and her wish no matter what. Which consequently she does do in Rebellion by turning into a witch. After that sacrifice, a new Homura is born, who might as well be Homulily herself.
