mAh vs Wh | why Watt-hour is superior ⚡️🔋

Ғылым және технология

While I think the mAh unit is still going to be used for the foreseeable future, I think we should change to Wh soon - especially for phones.

    Correction! At 2:50 we should divide 1000 to eliminate the mili, not multiply.

    I would like to ask if you could test the ROG Charger hub with PPS and battery bypass, plus cooler on games via HDMI on Dex. That's basically using a phone as a gaming console with no battery and looking for throttling, vs. temperatures. Yuzu and Genshin Impact could be good candidates if you will. Snapdragon 8 gen 2 and 3 as well. No one has done that yet and that seems great. Thanks.

    I used to own an Anker 15000 mAh powerbank and had a phone of 3700 mAh capacity. It would always confuse me why the equation doesn't add up simply and why I don't get to charge my phone 4 times with it fully. After watching this video I understand it and feel that most powerbanks are actually falsely advertised because they would show a high mAh number but a lower Wh number. Making you think that great it's going to give me multiple charges but it doesn't go that way. For all this time I just blamed the power loss due to inefficiencies during the power transfer

    At 08:20 i cant understand why According to me, we should actually look at how much charge the console needs from the powerbank, it needs 2590 mA and the powerbank can give 25,000 mA. So why cant it simply be ~10 times. How and why does W come into picture, if the same amount of charge needs to be transferred? I am real confused

  • @NasiLemakTech

    @NasiLemakTech

    Because the voltage is different. Since the ROG Ally takes in 15.48V, the power bank needs to do a lot of power conversion before sending it to the device. The wattage is looking at the amount of pure energy, after the conversion, no matter what is the voltage or current.

    Imo all the battery comparisons in the end do not make sense. As the user behaviour changes according to the battery life we are getting on per day basis. We will automatically adjust to the battery life we are getting wether it is a cheaper or an expensive phone.

  • @NasiLemakTech

    @NasiLemakTech

    Yeah your battery life usage is not going to be the same as mine because of how differently we use our phones. Everything is anecdotal.

    8:40 Fun Fact: Apple only writes the rated capacity on their batteries and that's why their capacity values are always looking so "odd" For the better though, as all batteries have or exceed that value, unlike with Typical battery capacities and as we should be using Wh to begin with

    i get your point, but unfortunately it's just really wrong from the start up. mAh (C/1000/s*3600*s) is actually the dimension of charge, which correct for capacity. what you are trying to say is that the capacity of a battery doesn't matter for most things, because what we are interested in is the energy conent, which you can give in Wh (J/s*3600*s) because that has the dimension of energy. that is a legit point. but what you are saying in the first minutes is just wrong and makes things extra confusing.

  • @homeape.

    i think that my issue is that "battery capacity" is an actual technical term. you should argue that it's irrelevant for most people, not that for some reason mAh is a wrong unit for capacity, because it factually isn't.

  • @homeape.

    11:35 the twitter community note is equally unhelpful. "true capacity" just aren't reasonable terms to use. all it does is confuse people even more.

  • @NasiLemakTech

    @NasiLemakTech

    5 ай бұрын

    mAh is not the capacity. It doesn't actually mean anything as we only use mAh as the "battery capacity" if we assume the voltage is the same across all batteries. As single-cell batteries like 18650 or 21700 batteries then sure - that's completely valid. But for devices like phones and tablets and power banks, we can't do that. We need to account for the voltage for the true amount of energy in that particular battery. Wh - or in other words, Joule - is the true battery capacity.

    @@NasiLemakTech im sorry but this is wrong. the capacity of a battery is measured in mAh, because it must have the dimension of charge. capacity just isnt a measure of how long your phone will last. because that depends on the energy content, measured in Wh, the dimension of energy. you can just put it in google and one of the first things that pop up is a sciencedirect article by elsevier. and they explain it in the abstract of that paper. trust them if you dont trust me. even if theyre not the layman's understanding of a term
