Magnus is like the Risen Neo at the end of the first Matrix. He can do anything.

As a low rating player, I always wondered what would happen if someone came up with some stupid opening no one had an answer to. This is what happens, and I love it. I imagine the opening will be analysed and countered to no end until it's just old news, but I'm loving the potential chaos.

There does not need to a lot of analysis. You are missing an endgame piece that helps secure a corner. Just take the center because the opponent is not doing it. Take the free rook because that is just good. Then develop pieces and push pawns down the flank of the board. You are actually so far behind from this opening. Normaly moves like a4 are still supported by a rook. That is not the case here. The only benefit of this opening is that you now have a bishop to fight on the dark/light squares and your opponent does not. That is also the purpose behind the Fianchetto'd bishop. You immediatly attack the spot where the opossed bishop can no longer defend.

Putting people in weird positions they're not used to is valuable in blitz, I would expect it to be useless basically everywhere else.

To me this just shows how much memorization is involved in high level chess, especially blitz. If you change it up from the normal themes players can't figure it out with short time advantage or no advantage.

This isnt a gambit it's a hustle. It's the chess equivalent of giving your opponent 3 balls off the table after the break in a game of pool. You're getting shit out of the way to clean up your shots.

I think one of the funniest things about this is that some people have reached the idea that playing this way is actually good somehow. Honestly, sacking the exchange isn't that terrible, but there are other issues like the rim knight and not having center pawns. You can see Magnus looking for improvements in these games and there just aren't any, it's bad.

Plus at my level I never get that rook active anyway, neither do my opponents, giving a rook that wouldn't do anything anyway for a bishop that was activated move 1 isn't terrible

@@psymar That’s a fair point but i’ll stick to my Evan’s gambit lol. But i think what makes the rook sac worse is that you don’t get immediate counter play so you just have to wait for your opponent to make a stupid move and punish it. Sounds a lot easier than actually doing it

One of the shocks of my chess career was learning that winning the exchange in the early opening created a hard technical conversion with limited time on the clock. I think that Magnus doing this is his way of illustrating this point.

To be fair, this is exactly the kind of chess Fischer would play. He even invented a new kind of chess.
