Magnus Carlsen Vs. Kasparov

Magnus Carlsen was only 13 years old here.
Prince of Chess directed and produced by Øyvind Von Doren Asbjørnsen. See the whole film here: www.princeofchess.com. This was at the Reykjavic Rapid 2004 tournament where some of the world's best players competed.
A rapid game between the past and future world champion? 2 of the worlds greatest players indeed. I wonder what would happen if they were to play now.
Interesting that sometime after this, Kasparov started coaching Carlsen for a while.

Obviously Kasparov had an immense pressure not to lose to a 13yo and #700 in the world. BUT... damn did Magnus as a kid made him shit bricks during the whole game. The amount of confidence at 13 years of age from Magnus is outstanding. 3:13 I think Kasparov did that move on purpose since Magnus wasn't looking at the board at the time. Little did it work when the kid came back running to make his move knowing exactly what he had moved and making Kasparov even MORE nervous. Kasparov was terrified of 13yo Magnus!

maybe he was terrified but in the end he drew the game and won the second game (where it was up to him to use the whites). Kasparov playing mind games by showing up late and taking his sweet time all while during the match Magnus casually just walks away to observe the other matches while Kasparov is clearly realizing that he will not end up beating a 13 year old! Played with Gary, simultaneous chess. I have never seen somebody so deep in the game and so afraid that he may lose from some no-name. I guess that’s his fuel. He was late on all us, and he was making ticks and sounds all the time over our board. Of course, he’s a chess genius. I would, broadly speaking, say that Magnus is better in terms of natural talent, but he doesn’t have yet that fear that fuels Kasparov.

Its rare people dont consider that thing you said. Its obvious and its clearly easier to play when you have nothing to lose. Imagine being a world for example, a 5 times world champion and you have to compete with someone with that potential. The one who debuts is always like ok i will try, but the champion like, man i cant lose i cant i cant, people trust me. when lotta people supports you it becomes harder to calm down cause you dont want to dissapoint them. For example now magnus vs alireza..alireza nothin to lose, but magnus has the need to demostrate hes still the #1.. pressure is different on both of em

The thing is, it isn't fun being the number one in the world and it's a lot more stressful. Anyone can play against you, and if they lose, who cares. But if they win, it's a whole different story. It's easier to play when you have nothing to lose Also, they played 3 games against Magnus in this event. Kasparov won 2, drew 1. This video only showed the one they drew, for obvious reasons

His brain was probably asking rethorically to Magnus "how you dare to be bored when playing with me, the greatest of all times?how can you get up the chair to watch other people play? am i a joke to you?". than when Magnus heard the click, just came back , moved a piece casually.
