I hope he just mumbles "adjust" before he does that.Otherwise, his opponent may call arbiter and claim he brakes the rules. For instance, he started the clock, Caruana made his 1st move , game was on and he was adjusting his pieces starting touching his rook, (which cannot move on first move) and then touched several of his pawns and other pieces. Some opponent may demand he would move his a-pawn, which is first of his touched pieces which can move on first move. Of course , in reality noone calls arbiter over that, they let his adjusting habit during the game slide, but rules are rules. Of course he can adjust his pieces without saying anything before the clock is started
