Magnus wanted to win and move to the finals in style but Abasov was obdurate in his defence . Great result for both .

Carsen barely dodged the bullet yesterday when his opponent did not notice line which would give black extra bishop( Magnus did not see it either ). 34. ... Qf1 35. Qd2 Rg6 36. Rh2 Rg1 37. Kb2 Qa1+ 38. Ka3 Qxe5 39. Rxh6 Black would play ending with extra bishop, white would have tough time to hold this Today he played with his food instead finishing the minimatch earlier and was forced to find only moves to hold. But at least he is in final. I hope it will be Carlsen - Pragg final. Older generation vs young one and Pragg is playing more exciting chess than very careful Caruana

What a run for Abasov. Only losing to Magnus himself. Should be really proud of himself.

Magnus vs Fabiano, rematch of 2018? Hopefully Fabiano can win the tiebreaks!

I don't hope for that. I wish Fabiano the best, but we KNOW that Fabiano goes on the defensive against Magnus. And we will have draw upon draw.

@@sagnaik first of all he doesn't like classical anymore as said him in post match interview of round 2 classical vs Keymer, second is that I don't think FIDE will change the age old classical format for the comfort of a single person

@@sagnaik so the strongest chess player in history is getting weaker in classical and doesn't want to play it anymore so let us reduce the time formats for his will and affect others? That is not how world works

@@Stefan_2117 the strongest chess player in history doesn't want to play in a classical format where everyone plays to draw against him. Any group or swiss stage is fucked for Magnus because no one will take any risk to try to win, they will all play to draw. And so long as they draw against him and win against weaker opponents amongst each other, they will always end up in points ahead of Magnus. So Magnus has to always take risky gambles to try to win Also, everyone knows classical is broken as a format. In the 1900s without engines, the better players had better prep. Now anyone can use an engine, so prep is trivial and half of classical is gone. It's like insisting everyone communicate using only pigeon carriers in 2023. We have emails and cellphones now, why aren't we changing the format to match the times? Prep no longer shows the better player like it used to, instead playing under time pressure is the mark of a better player. Classical should change to reflect that in some way.
