The black lines represent the stronger crescent shadows that are present from light refracting off of glossy/metallic materials. Thats why Storm has them across her entire body; her outfit is supposed to be a more shiny/glossy material, unlike something like flat white cotton. Magnetos' helmet, belt, and the purple parts on the gauntlets and boots have traditionally been depected as being metallic.

Somehow it never occurred to me that the material was a factor for cell shading, thanks for pointing it out.

The 'purple' is very good and right. It makes the cape look much prettier and not that glossy.

With the cel-shading and darkened shadow eyes, Magneto looks more menacing.

If you hit the ink with a matte finish spray, the gloss won't be a problem. I've used these pens to fill in the lines on Spider-Man figures. If the ink dries out, that might actually be because it has accumulated too much dry paint on the tip of the pen. Draw a few lines on scrap paper until the ink comes out again. If that doesn't work, try a little water at the tip, then give the scrap paper lines another try. Great work and good luck!!!

Those black lines are basically reflection lines to show those parts are made of metal. Normally there's a white line to contrast it

As someone who just started using Micron Pens, you're not supposed to use it over paint, as the pen will pick it up and it'll clog the tip.

I believe you're not supposed to use those pens on painted areas so maybe a clear coat first, THEN the pen? Think that's why it "dries up". I've also heard that you can use an eraser to remove it, although I haven't really tried that myself. You should really try out a chrome paint pen as well Ken! Id be so interested to see what ideas you come up with in how to use it. I've used one to improve a ton of my figures, like my Marvel Legends Winter Soldier, the brand new Scarlet Spider and a bunch of bladed weapons. You just have to be extremely careful and not touch it as it cures as you'll ruin the mirror finish, just make sure to seal it with a clear coat so that doesn't happen. Great work as always👍

How many coats of paint do you have to use to get opacity? The reason I'm asking is I saw you were using craft paints. Have you tried higher quality acrylic miniature paints? They're opacity is generally higher their coverage is generally better and they dry to be a little bit tougher.

Ken is an artist. Artists use brushes and paints rather than pens or markers to paint. Yet, Ken is an open-minded artist and is willing to try new skills, tools and materials to make his works of art.

So the straight up black shadow is often used in 2d animation as a way to simulate an object being reflective and/or metalic. Also the pen may not have run out of ink but rather, scratched off paint got on the tip of the marker and is blocking the ink (just a theory though) 🫡👍
