Thanks for the video. I knew about this after working with photoshop over the years but you’ve demonstrated in a very concise and efficient way. My guess regarding why could be that adjustment layers are math operations over the layer beneath. So the math is less precise with a lower bit file to begin with. As soon as you bump up the bit depth, the math is much more precise. But I would still argue that starting with a 16bit raw source file will yield a smoother result than a double conversion on an 8bit file. But it is a good trick if you have no choice and out of option.

I'm confused... I have a jpeg file that was exported from lightroom of a smooth light gradient transition that has significant banding throughout. So should I import the RAW into PS or the jpeg with the banding?

If I have an 8bit photo with banding, and it has banding without any adjustment layers, it won't get rid of the banding when converted to 16 bit. Only if you introduce noise it gets rid of them. Wish there was a way to fix it without the noise.

@@Stylemypic Suggestion for when you are going to do it: Do not include check layers of doubtful usefulness; if you want, mention them, but with respect of those that are definitely useful, please, provide all the elements of judgment that open the mind of the observer. The idea is not only to make videos for the sake of it, but to spread knowledge.

not really a trick, and definitely not a bug. That is HOW non destructive adjustment layers work. That is why we use Adjustment layers instead simple adjustments (for ex. Ctr+M). As you mentioned at the end of the video, if you do the Curves trickery from menu (destructive method) no magic conversion saves your image from banding :) In other words, with adjustment layers, the banding is NOT REAL until you Flatten the image. When you switch to 16 bits, PS recalculates the transition from 255 steps to 65K shades. So in this example not only the bit depth, but the adjustment layers get you rid of banding, so you can keep on 16 bits as long as you stick with adjustment layers too ;) Else, at 1:08 you say, to enable the dither. No visible difference if you leave it unchecked (there is indeed a small difference, but only detectable with comparison trickery).

I have a question, I make custom full print shirts, I usually put a gradient on the back of the shirt and sleeves. Now I have a problem, when I print them, theres such a big difference in how it looks in my pc onto the paper. When I print it, you can see where the other color starts with a blurred white line. What could be happening? Good video!
