About:
Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

I find it funny how Buquet describes the Phantom/Erik as he was in the book and in the movie/musical he looks nothing like in the book. XD

The half mask was originally meant to serve as a replacement to the full mask on broadway so the audience could connect more with the Phantom from their seats. I guess they kept it in the movie for consistency but they really didn’t need to. Could have done a full mask and really honed in on the severity of his deformity.

I feel like that's such an exaggerated response. What was a "disaster" about this film? Are you saying even the props and art direction were bad? The musical arrangements were bad? I feel like the stage fans are so over dramatic about their hate for this film, like get over it. This film was made 20 years ago.

@Felix The Cat the costumes often aren't good at least not in comparison to the stage version/don't make sense with the scene (ex the Hannibal dress which totally doesn't match when that play is set! Or the very bland costuming in terms of color for the masquerade. Or butlers underwhelming red death outfit. The musical arrangements a fine but wrecked by the poor choices in terms of singers as they largely cast people who couldn't sing the role properly and thats not even getting onto the topic of the stupid speak singing. The cinematography isn't great either with many awkward shots and takes. Unnecessary additions like the stupid sword fight are irritating especially when a former assassin wouldn't get beat by pretty boy. Not to mention it makes Raoul look like even more of a dumbass. Then of course there's the non existent deformity. Yeah we're a little pissed that our favorite musical got a crap adaption that in some cases poorly introduces people to the material and spits on the point of the story. We're just lucky we got the recording of the 25th to wash the bad taste from our mouths

@@madeleine5561 I completely disagree with all of your criticisms, mainly because I prefer realism and minimalism which makes more sense for the time period of 1870 (another aspect I enjoyed was pushing the time frame back). I loved Gerard Butler's Masque of Red Death outfit much more than the stage version. I didn't care for how garish they made it, it was off putting to me. I don't like over the top, overly dramatic, showy things. That's my personal taste. I prefer minimalism, simple, refined fashion and greatly dislike over the top, showy costumes. I enjoyed all of the singers, especially Gerard Butler. I thought it was nice to have a different type of singing style in this film. I really enjoy the classical style of singing. Emmy Rossum's soprano was exalting when it needed to be, but also is subdued because she is such a young singer (she's only 16). It doesn't make sense for her to have a fully developed adult voice when she is so young. I love Patrick Wilson's voice and felt it complimented him as the heroic archetype. Both Gerard and Patrick Wilson contrasted one another appropriately; dark masculinity v white knight. Sometimes I get irritated with broadway singing because it always sounds like they're yelling at me. I get that stage singers need to project, but this isn't necessary for film. If anything, you need to tone it back and tone it down, subtly is better in film. Less is more. If this is something you don't care for, well go ahead and watch musical theater. It's always there for you. Also, acting while singing is appreciated. I loved his Down Once More not because it's pure and perfect sounding because he acts the whole time. The "stupid" sword fight made way more sense than the lame ass firework show from the stage version. I don't even know why he has fireworks, where would he use them in his lair? Why would have them to begin with. It makes no logical sense. How can Raoul look like a dumbass when he won the sword fight. He kicked Erik's ass in that fight and made him look overconfident and smug whereas Raoul is calm and logical. You're not the only person who claims this as their "favorite musical" so please stop acting like you own it. I can't stand how some of the haters think they own Phantom of the Opera. I also can't stand how they act like this is the 'worst movie ever" or "worse musical ever!" Like stop over exaggerating, I went to film school. I have a master's degree in film. Don't tell me what a bad film is, I know what that shit is. This is the only film I can think of where the haters are more annoying than the fangirls. They act like 13 year old fangirls and have meltdowns and adult baby temper tantrums about a film made 20 years ago. It's sad and pathetic to see this behavior. It's usually the opposite. It's usually the fangirls who are the problem, but not with this movie. Nope! No one on earth ever made you watch this scene, let alone this fucking movie. So why are you here driving all of the film fans crazy with your petty bullshit. Just go away and let us enjoy what we want to. For the love of god! Finally, I hate the fact that the hategirls have to come here and make all of the film fans feel guilty or try to shame us for liking what we want to. That's some emotionally abusive BS. Please kindly go away.

@felixthecat2786 I'll counter a few of your claims and then leave it at that I'll concede most of your costume points on preference EXCEPT the Hannibal dress as Carlotta clearly shown in the correct one that matches the production only for them to then display a completely different production. It doesn't fit or make narrative sense plain and simple. That's not just opinion or preference (I actually consider it one of the better looking outfits it just doesn't fit) Butler can't sing the music you complain about Broadway actors yelling yet butler bellows rather than sings a large portion of his lines when he isn't obviously straining to hit the notes. You may like it but on a technical level it's a poor performance. Rossum as you say doesn't have the same vocals as other Christine's because she's so young. Which is the problem on multiple levels a) her vocals are decent at best but not stunning the way Christine's are described and implied to be because they aren't fully developed. She doesnt get the spectacular moments the play gives us b) they unnecessarily deaged the character who is not 16 in the book or musical. It was one of the many unnecessary changes that added an ick factor that was not there. Phantom particularly the musical has its...issues arguably but he wasn't a groomer or going after an underaged girl. Rossum's singular facial expression doesn't help. There's also as I mentioned the issue with the speak singing where foe no conceivable reason they start saying the lines rather than singing them mid song. It's disconcerting As I mentioned before there's the shoddy camera work that Lindsey Ellis actually did a good job explaining in her video on the movie (going into other issues with the film unrelated to casting). I suggest you check it out for a better look at what I mean. The swordfight makes Raoul an idiot because he has the phantom at sword point and instead of capturing or killing him he let's him go. He then proceeds IN THE NEXT SCENE to lay out a convoluted plan to capture or kill the phantom when he literally had him at his mercy. I don't care if Christine yelled no it still makes Raoul look foolish. And again he'd never have won against the phantom anyway. The fire makes perfect sense because it harkens back to giry's line about him being a magician. We are getting to see that. And it's far more intimidating and mysterious. No in context the fire makes sense Also again the nonexistent deformity kind of kills it dead. What's the point in the phantom and why should we pity him if he never had a reason for being shunned in the first place.
