Magic of Making - Potato Crisps

Ойын-сауық

Poor innocent potatoes are dug up, skinned alive, sliced, and fried in boiling oil. More of a horror movie than a film about making things.

Fun fact: the reason why George Krum “invented” potato chips was because he was trying to use passive aggressive revenge to deal with a difficult customer who was complaining that his French fries kept coming out soggy. To Krum’s surprise, the difficult customer loved the result.

Back in the eighties I heard a stupid advertisement on some British channel. A bunch of cartoon potatoes were singing “We wanna be Smiths crisps.” It still haunts my mind, the monstrous ear worm.

The famine was nothing to do with failing crops, the British shipped out more than enough food to feed the Irish to Canada and other countries and allowed the Irish to starve, it was a holocaust not famine

Yeah I was like “okay there was… quite a lot more to the potato famine than that… it wasn’t like the Irish just really liked potatoes and got over dependent and that’s why so many people starved, which is kind of what he makes it sound like

The making of a crisp is well documented in a English cookbook long before the americans took it over. Please do try to get the history right.
