Magic Johnson, Larry Bird reminisce about their rivalry in college and the NBA (2009) | ESPN Archive

Спорт

In 2009, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird discussed the anniversary of their national title game matchup in 1979 between Michigan State and Indiana State. The duo also discussed their matchups with the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics and the funny story behind Bird's retirement ceremony. They concluded the interview with Magic asking Bird about NBA legends past and present including Michael Jordan, John Stockton, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Bird and Magic may be the two greatest TEAM players ever in a team sport. Bird was able to elevate a team, Indiana State, that had no other future NBA players to a 33-0 record heading into the NCAA finals. This is a truly remarkable interview. Imagine if it was 1984, and Magic was trying to say, "Larry, can you take us through your thought process as we play against each other in the Finals?" Bird would have just looked at Magic in stony silence. ("I didn't want to be friends with him. I was trying to beat him!") So this is an important document in their evolution not just as players, but as people. Both Larry and Magic seem to have learned that there is life beyond the basketball court.

Other than Elgin Baylor and Jerry West being almost brothers when they played, Magic and Bird are simply the best ever in showing all of us that we can be different in lots of things, but when we bond we become powerful individuals. Thank You Gentlemen! It was an Honor to see both of you play in the NBA and then the Olympics. 🇺🇸 🏀

Fierce Rivals turned brothers. I saw an interview when Magic (fighting back tears) talked about how when the chips are down you find out who your real friends are. Larry was the first to call Magic after he announced he had HIV, had to retire, and at that time was considered a death sentence. 33 years later, and Magic is still alive and well!
