Magic BMW Wagon: Intermittent Crank No-start

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Don't see too many of these on the road anymore...a 1994 BMW 5-Series Wagon!
Customer says that after a battery change, the car would intermittently crank but not start.
PARTS CANNON already shot a crank sensor and a couple used PCMs...
Since none of my scanners wanted to talk to this classic German, we go old school and check the basics...
Enjoy!
Ivan

Reminds me of my sister's garage door alarm contact sensor. After living in the home for 20 years, all of a sudden the alarm started going off while she was away. Using a couple of pieces of plastic, I raised the magnet off the concrete floor to get it closer to the sensor on the door. Weakened magnet problem solved, no parts required, except an old old plastic ice cream container.

Hummm. Car runs fine after three weeks after installing all the old stuff back. Almost sounds pin or wiring issue. I've had fixed problems by disconnecting and reconnecting before. Either there was slight tarnish/corrosion on the pin or the female pin no longer provided sufficient friction to make a good connection. Did you move wires trying to recreate the problem? It makes me wonder if possibly the ECM just isn't receiving some kind of input to tell it a start attempt is being made. OBD I vehicles are somewhat quirky in that respect. Part of the beauty of them is that they almost always have some way of retrieving DTCs without a scan tool (jumping connector pins, cycling the ignition switch multiple times, turning a mode selector screw). I would figure that as long as the crank sensor can provide half a volt positive and negative, the ECM should be able to read it properly (based on my experience). The only other variable I can think of is that the actual cranking speed is not fast enough. It could also use an oil pressure switch input for confirmation.

It is possible to find a middle ground and buy the OEM sensor, without having the BMW logo stamped on it. This sensor is most likely a Hella unit which is available in the aftermarket. I replaced the one in my 1992 BMW with a Hella unit from RockAuto. Made in Italy so not cheap junk, and the price was fair. On these cars it has to be Bosch, Hella, MAHLE, Stabilus etc. The cheaper stuff doesn't work.

Is there a fuel pump control module that the fuel pump relay connects to, as in some Ford products. If so, check for corrosion and high resistance on that end of the circuit. In many cars, turning on the ignition is what activates the fuel pump, so that there is enough fuel pressure to start the car, which you were not getting consistently. You indicated that the 5 volt circuit was slightly too low - generally a sign of resistance due to corrosion in a ground or a corroded or loose connector, and you were manually connecting the fuel pump wire to that relay connector, always a bad sign. OBD-1 or -2 standards and protocols had not been finalized when that car was built, and were not required to be complied with on BMWs in 93/94; thus any trouble codes were all proprietary to BMW, which is why your equipment wasn't helping you. Looks like a bad circuit to the fuel pump and a gap at the crank sensor that is at the edge of being too wide.

The kernel executes "Jobs" or Scripts written in Basic. You need to define the output and input values in some cases but the app has some help I believe. BTW, the Job "Result" is just the execution state (finished, not finished) not the actual response from the ECU, don't let that confuse you. You should message "M539 Restorations" he restores and works on all types of BMW ... hes located in Frankfurt Germany, has a channel on here. Maybe he could tell you what scanner / software to use on these cars.

So, putting the old sensor back solved the problem, which was the configuration that caused the problem in the first place. Does not make sense.

Great video as always! I'm not a big fan of BMW's however these older e34 s were pretty good and reliable cars not junk for sure. E34 M5 is still a legendary car. Maintenance is obviously a key and these cars were not the cheapest to maintain for sure. Problem is they are too old now.

I was "Like 666", with 6 dislikes, kind of a weird coincidence. BMW went out of their way to make diagnosis difficult, that connector is just another tactic they use to make BMW seem special. This customer gets it, BMW is "Junk". Last one I did had a broken crank sensor wire damaged by the owner when he didn't notice the broken cooling hose and instead swapped out the thermostat in response to an overheat issue. I found the sensor wire under the top thermostat bolt, and was not surprised, everything this guy touches turns into a no start/no run. He was so cheap that the car sat for 4 years before they finally brought it to me for the no start. He declined the cooling hose repair, and then complained about losing coolant. It seems the only thing worse than a BMW is a poor customer trying to look cool in BMW, but has no money.

What kind of bus is that supposed to be? Obviously it isn't differential, unless you had on channel inverted. Those curves at the peaks look kinda weird too. Like the code tool was gradually increasing the height, trying to hit some magic threshold voltage, without going too high? You can just bet it's some kind of built in pickiness so that only the authorized scan tool could talk to it. I just hate the proprietary attitude of auto manufacturers. Now they're bringing encrypted CAN data into the picture because of some manufactured security/privacy issue. Just another technique attempting to lock out guys like Ivan and Eric, that just want to make a living and offer vehicle owners something other than dealership inflated maintenance prices.

up next, crank walk from thrust bearings being gone, causing sensor to have low output until it moves back ;)) just joking, but god only knows, maybe BMW had those issues ( manual trans? did they even have them then lol)
