(Prime of Miss Jean Brodie). Maggie Smith looked and sounded so much like my mother that I was sure she was born in Scotland (Glasgow in my mother’s case). Only reinforced when I saw her as in Harry Potter. And all this time she was a girl from Ilford!
@wandamundy1759 Жыл бұрын
The first role I ever saw Maggie Smith in - was "The Prime of Miss Jean Brody" in 1969 - when I was 20 yrs old. She was stunningly brilliant. It was the first British movie I'd seen that wasn't a comedy ("Carry On" movies) - and the difference from a typical Hollywood movie was jarring. She was not cookie-cutter Barbie Doll. She looked just like the rest of we ordinary folks - and so we were not spectators, watching a performance. We identified with her and the other actors. It/She was incredible !!
@patrickmcauliffe755
9 ай бұрын
I loved reading your comment, for I had the same experience at approximately the same age. I loved the Carry On movies as I learned a different, broader form of humor. But the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was truly an enlightening experience. Although the movie went on to win Miss Smith a considerable amount of awards, critics never got the thrust of this movie. As sweet and as beautiful as Jean was, she was a tremendously seductive yet dangerous person. She placed her students in harms way via notions of idealism romanticism rather than teaching established facts. She fancied herself as knowing better than most so she had to enlighten her students to her notion of reality. I can still hear Brodie crying out "assassin" to Sandy at the end. Someone had to put a stop to Brodie. If only there were more Sandy's in today's world.

@@patrickmcauliffe755absolutely. And Pamela Franklin, who was just 19 years old at the time, was equally electrifying. I think that’s what makes that final scene watchable over and over. Definitely the best one-on-one scene I’ve ever seen. It’s an absolute masterclass; spine chilling, with no tense music or special effects.. just exemplary acting.

@spellywelly Absolutely! It was nothing short of riveting. I've recently shown the movie to a friend of mine who only knows of Dame Smith from the Harry Potter movies. Yes! Mother Superior. And I adored her in "First Wives Club". Maggie Smith is a treasure in any role.
I so dearly love, respect, and adore this beautiful, beloved dear woman
Dame, I thank you for your talent and craft! Loved you in the prime of Jane Brody ❤️
She is a beautiful lady❤
Been watching Dame Maggie since I was a little girl (and she would hate it if I told her that) and just love her in every single thing she's ever done! She can do any kind of roll!😊
Mother of hogwarts ❤
That does sound like something Mcgonagall would say
She's such a treasure
I had always hoped there would be a mashup of all the Harry Potter actors saying “ But I’m in my prime” as outtakes with Maggie
the Pride of Miss Jane Brodie ….. of you haven’t seen it …. its Pretty amazing. Her skills are AMAZING REALLY ❤❤❤❤❤

(Prime of Miss Jean Brodie). Maggie Smith looked and sounded so much like my mother that I was sure she was born in Scotland (Glasgow in my mother’s case). Only reinforced when I saw her as in Harry Potter. And all this time she was a girl from Ilford!

He never heard of Pamela Franklin. As the scene was reaching its apex, he leaned in towards the screen. He was spellbound. Your assessment is completely spot on!

The first time I recall seeing Dame Maggie was in a morning movie on TV during the summer when I was a kid. Travels with My Aunt. She was a feisty young actress and is still feisty today. (I say it’s the Scot in her! Gives her a bit of extra spice.) 😀
I remember her from The Prime of Miss Jean Brody.

If I was a movie star that’s the kind of question I’d love to get. Shows the magic worked for the little one’s. If a wild-eyed man in a dark alley asked me the same thing, my feelings on the subject might’ve been a bit different.

Even my mother was born in 1971 and I already feel old at 28 yrs of age. She really is old. Anyway I always loved her, Prof McGonagall had such a cool, badass but sweet grandma vibe. Also probably that was the first time as a kid I looked at an old person and thought "Wow she looks beautiful. I wonder how she looked in her young age"
I have loved her ever she said; "Come give us a Squinch." ❤
Sister Act was definitely the first movie I saw her. But she embodies perfectly her role in Harry Potter.

She is one of my favourite actresses of all time. She is the inspiration for my sass and dry wit/sarcasm.
I remember Maggie from “The Secret Garden” first. Then I saw her in Hook and was delighted to see her in Harry Potter. To me, she was perfect as McGonagall. She’s a treasure. 😊
She's so badass I thought that was a dab at the beginning 😹 wouldn't be surprised
Bless her heart. She’s still kicking with us.

Sister Act and First Wives Club were where I knew her best from. 😂 She's so skilled at the dry response.
Lest we forget Downton Abbey 🌹
The first role I remember her in was as the Goddess Thetis in the Original Clash of the Titans ( 1982 or 1983) and she is a stunning woman! Great actor, I've always enjoyed watching her on screen.
Awww I love McGonagall and Maggie herself
She has played so many lovely characters a nun granny Wendy McGonagall and many more
Perfection in that role. A consummate British actress, with lifelong performances that are so loved. Harry was the icing on the cake.

Love this almost as much as I love Ian McKellen's impression of her when he spoke to her at an award show. His impression is so spot on. That dry humor kills me. 😂
I also liked her as Reverned Mother in Sister Act. Anything I've seen her in she's been excellent 👍🏻
