Mag-Lev Audio ML1 levitating turntable review

Ғылым және технология

So in the beginning I thought it was a hoax, after seeing it I thought this could never work, but since I had it in the studio I think it's a smart way of decoupling the platter and preserve consistent RPM.

When I say "actually it doesn't sound that bad', is me saying "it actually sounds really good". I'm not a guy shouting marketing terms like "amazing" or "unbelievable", I really like it down to earth and this is a good record player with a great concept. It only needs a lot of time to get a record playing ;-)

Surely a magnetic field so powerful as to float a heavy pallet two inches is going to affect the performance of a magnetic cartridge which optimally should be free of stray magnetic fields.

What happens if you touch it while it’s spinning? Like if you spun it forward accidentally while changing songs. Will playback speed up or will it adjust to the correct speed?

Couple questions: Would you suggest the Ortofon Blue or Bronze. Moving magnet, or up the game to a moving coil? Are there dust cover options? What if the turntable hung from the ceiling as opposed to a table? Better sound isolation? Thanks for the best review so far.

I' heard one of these and I don't know what experience this guy has in high end audio but this table does not sound very good. In fact, it's just a silly design, aimed squarely at those who don't know any better. There are two main criteria in designing a turntable; (1) Isolation from airborne and mechanical resonance, and (2) stability in the mechanism to reduce wow and flutter as well as to provide a path for the transmission of the resonances created by playing a record. This table doesn't do either very well and it actually creates issues with the lack of control of the platter by it's design. Also, by it's design, it is relegated to using MM or MI cartridges, leaving out the higher end MC designs that most audiophiles use. The use of the cheap Pro-ject arm doesn't help matters. For this kind of money, you can get a Sota which is one of the best tables to accomplish the goals that this table was trying to do but the Sota sounds good.

Is there any specs/measurements for wow and flutter, tracking etc available for this table? I could imagine the rumble being quite low but it wouldn't suprise me if the wow and flutter speed accuracy was well less than perfect. Also, it's seems that this would be quite a dangerous device. What would happen if you were to get close with a metallic/magnetic object? Or if you got your hand stuck in that thing? It looks cool though, but I can't see how it would sound/measure (if something measures well it sounds good) better than let's say conventional direct drive such as a Technics.

@@EliasTheHunter It's magnetic right? Say you're wearing some kind of jewellry like a ring that is magnetic. Can't be good have that anywhere near that machine.

What I am thinking is why is the platter floating ? Why not make the whole damn player floating ? So both the arm and platter are isolated form vibrations.

It's not designed to minimise vibrations, it's designed to be a spectacle.

Noticing that the spinning platter exhibits a fair amount of wobble, might I suggest that the turntable base be precisely levelled in order to prevent this issue. A standard turntable would exhibit a similar problem in this instance. This issue simply wouldn't be as noticeable. And yes, a better phonograph cartridge is definitely called for. But then, setting up a new phonograph cartridge properly, is definitely not a task for a novice :-)

Surely magnetism isn’t totally stable in its forces ? There must be flows in the force that will them create minor movements in the platter horizontally amd vertically , in fact in every direction , much like a spinning plate on a column of air . I am clearly no physicist but is this perhaps correct and one of the big reasons why magnets have not been furthered in the past when they’ve been explored in turntable design ? I can’t believe they would be more stable than a traditional bearing , which worked and worked well with its slow evolution and development of materials and precision .

Every video I watch of this table shows the platter WOBBLING in it's rotation. NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL. Nice looking or cute but the platter wobble is the Ah Crap that destroys any merit !!!!

Buttuuuuh... how its sounds eigenlijk... levijading?
